Martin Hensley was born ca 1824/25 per his age on the 1850
census (25) or ca 1819/20 per his age on the 1860 census (40). He was
born in Virginia per the 1850 census, or North Carolina per the 1860
census. I don't know who his parents are. In 1820 there was only one Hensley in Grayson Co., VA and that was Toliver Hensley (alias Taliaferro Hensley). He could be Martin's father though I have no proof that he is. Toliver was living by himself at that time. His wife was living elsewhere. See his own page for details on that. Martin named one of his sons "Witcher" Hensley which is unusual. The Witcher surname is prevalent in Pittsylvania Co., VA which is where Toliver Hensley came from, so that may be significant. By the 1830 census Martin would have been either 5 or 10 years old depending on his actual birth date. That should put him in the under 5 group (c1825/30) or the 5-9 group (c1820/25) or the 10-14 group (c1815/20). Toliver Hensley was in neighboring Ashe Co., NC in 1830, but was still living alone, so Martin doesn't seem to be with him. There were no Hensleys listed in Grayson Co., VA in 1830. On 3 Mar 1840 Martin Hensley married Nancy Lawrence in Ashe Co., NC. Nancy was born ca 1808/09 in North Carolina (both per 1850 census). I don't know who her parents are. She may have been married prior to this marriage, and therefore Lawrence is her late husband's name and not her own maiden name. I'm not sure of that, but her 1850 census entry shows one child that was born about four years before her 1840 marriage. I wasn't able to find them on the 1840 census either in Ashe Co., NC or in neighboring Grayson Co., VA. They are on the 1850 census in Grayson Co., VA. There are other Hensleys in the county then too, but not listed nearby. There is a Mary "Polly" Hensley (c1795) in the county who has a son Martin (c1845). She could be the older Martin's sister or widowed sister-in-law, or on the other hand the naming could be a coincidence.
Martin Hensley moved to Iowa in the 1850's and is listed on the 1860 census in Keokuk County. It appears that Nancy Lawrence Hensley died in the 1850's and Martin married Catherine (---) before ca 1859, probably in Iowa.
They are still in Keokuk for the 1870 census. Mrs. Hensley is listed as "Varinda" or "Marinda." Is she the same person as Catherine or did Martin marry again? I'm not sure.
They moved to Butler Co., NE before ca 1876. They are listed there on the 1880 census. Some of the children are listed as having been born in Illinois. That may be wrong, or perhaps they did move to Illinois briefly before moving to Nebraska.
