I (Marty Grant) am not related to Robert Hensley as far as I know.

This family used various spellings of their surname, apparently with "Hindsley" or "Hinsley" being the final version (though I'm not sure if they kept this spelling after 1880). For the sake of consistency, I'm using the "Hensley" spelling throughout, except when citing other records.

Robert Hensley was born ca 1824/25 in Tennessee, presumably in Smith County (if I am correct about who his parents are).

Robert Hensley is probably a son of Benjamin and Ruth (---) Hensley. They had an apparent son his age, and they were living next door to each other on the 1850 census.

Robert was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), and apparently with them in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25).

Robert Hensley married Jane --- before ca 1848 in Dekalb Co, TN. Jane was born ca 1829/30 in Tennessee. I don't know her maiden name.

Robert and Jane were listed on the 1850 census in Dekalb County, next door to his probable parents Benjamin and Ruth.

I don't have Robert and family in 1870 yet, but they were apparently still in Dekalb County.

In 1880, Robert and family were listed in District 15, Dekalb County, with many family members nearby. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet. The surname was spelled "Hindsley" on this record. This record also gives Robert's mother and father as born in North Carolina.

Robert and Jane had at least 12 children as proven by the various census records through 1880. I don't have a lot of additional data on the children yet, so I'll not give them their own sections here. All of their sons who were married by 1880 were listed on the census in Dekalb County that year with their families.
