I (Marty Grant) am not related to Benjamin Hensley as far as I know.

The spelling of this family's surname changes from record to record. I think "Hindsley" is the "final" version of it, but I am not sure. For the sake of consistency, unless quoting a record, I'll use the "Hensley" spelling. See my page on Hensley Spellings for more information on this subject.

Benjamin Hensley was born ca 1775/76 (per 1850 census), or ca 1770/71 (per 1860 census), or ca 1764/65 (per 1880 census). His birth place is equally murky. The 1850 census gives his birth place as Virginia, while the 1860 census gives it as Maryland, and the 1880 census gives it as North Carolina, with his father also born NC and mother born Maryland. I don't have the 1870 census entry yet. All of these contradictory birth places makes it difficult to figure out what family Benjamin might be associated with. If he was actually from North Carolina, then I would guess he is associated with the Chatham County Hensleys (most often spelled "Hinsley").

Benjamin Hensley's parents are unknown. He was in Tennessee by 1820, so it is possible that his parents also went to Tennessee, or perhaps he went there alone.

Benjamin Hensley married Ruth --- sometime before ca 1810 (based on ages of older children per 1820 census). I'm not sure if they married in Virginia, North Carolina or in Tennessee. Ruth was born ca 1780/81 in North Carolina (per 1850 census). I don't know her maiden name.

I don't know where Benjamin and Ruth were in 1810. If they were already in Tennessee that year, then their census entry is lost with all the rest of Tennessee, but if they were still in Virginia, there is a chance they were listed, as only about half of the 1810 Virginia census was lost.  There is a Benjamin Hensley (c1765/84) listed on the 1810 census in Buckingham County, Virginia, who fits fairly well. There are two Benjamin Hinsleys in Chatham County, NC in 1810.

I have no direct proof (so far) that the Benjamin in 1810 Buckingham is the same one, but I'll include the entry here just in case. He was listed near William Hensley Sr (bef 1765), possibly a father, or older brother. The notations in italics are who these family members would be, if this is the same Benjamin under study here.

If the Buckingham County Benjamin is the same one, then they left Virginia for Smith County, Tennessee in the 1810-20 timeframe.  Benjamin Hensley was listed on the 1820 census in Smith County. He was the only Hensley listed there that year. This particular census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who Benjamin's neighbors were.

Benjamin Hensley moved to neighboring Jackson County, Tennessee during the 1830's. He was listed there on the 1840 census. He was a couple of pages away from Azariah Hensley (c1812), who could be a son of Benjamin. He fits, age-wise.

Benjamin and family moved to neighboring Dekalb County, Tennessee in the 1840's. Benjamin and Ruth were listed there on the 1850 census, next door to probable son Robert Hensley (c1825). No children were still at home in 1850 and next door to daughter Mary Fite and her husband Andrew J. Fite.

Ruth (---) Hensley died sometime between 1850 and 1860, either in Dekalb Co, TN or in Dallas Co, AR.

Benjamin Hensley moved to Dallas Co, AR during the 1850's, probably between ca 1852 and ca 1859.

Benjamin was listed on the 1860 census in Dallas County, Arkansas with his daughter Mary Hensley Fite. His son Thomas was a few households away.

I don't have them in 1870, but I assume they are still in Dallas County.

Benjamin was still living as of the 1880 census, though it looks like he died during the census year, as he was listed on the census, but the notation was that he was dead. He was with his daughter Mary Fite still in Dallas County, Arkansas, and listed as 115 years old (born ca 1764/65), which is probably close to being accurate. Even if he was born as late as ca 1775, he was still over 100 years old by 1880. The notation said he "died from exhaustion and senility", in other words, he died of "old age". This census showed his birth place as North Carolina, and his father's also, and his mother born in Maryland. His daughter Mary was listed as being born in North Carolina, with both of her parents being born there also. This is more evidence tying them back to the Chatham County family. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Children

Benjamin and Ruth had a very large family per the 1820-1840 census records, though no children were still at home by 1850. Only one of their children is proven (Mary). Two of them are probably Robert (c1825) (next to Benjamin in 1850) and Thomas (c1828) who was just a few houses away in 1850.

Unknown Son (1800/10). Benjamin Hensley (of 1810 Buckingham Co, VA) had an apparent son this age with him for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). Assuming the 1810 Buckingham Benjamin is the same one who went to Smith Co, TN, then this apparent son was no longer at home by 1820, so perhaps married or dead by then.

Unknown Son (1804/10). Benjamin Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was with him in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), and with him still in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10), and still with him in 1830 (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10), but was not home with Benjamin in 1840, so probably had married or died in the 1830's.

I have strong leads on who this son of Benjamin might have been.

Unknown Daughter (1800/10). Benjamin Hensley had an apparent daughter this age, but she was not with him in 1810 or 1820 but only in 1830 (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10). Her being "missing" in two previous census records is probably a strong indication that she was not a daughter at all or else it is an indication that she was born ca 1810, and listed in differing age groups. If this is so, then she was probably not born yet for the 1810 census, but in 1820 was listed as "Under 10", born ca 1810/20). This works, but I don't know if it is a correct interpretation or not. If it is, then this daughter (c1800/10) is probably the very same as the one born ca 1810/15 listed below, and born ca 1810.

Unknown Son (1810/15). Benjamin Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was with him in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and with him still in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15), but was not home with Benjamin in 1840, so probably had married or died in the 1830's.

This might be Azariah Hensley (c1812) who was also in Jackson Co, TN in 1840 (and later also). His age is compatible, and Azariah did name one of his sons "Benjamin". The only flaw (and it is not major) is that Azariah was born in North Carolina, though it is quite possible that Benjamin was in NC briefly before coming to Tennessee.

I have no direct proof that this son (born ca 1810/15) is the same as Azariah Hensley, but he is the best candidate so far.

Unknown Daughter (1810/15). Benjamin Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and with him still in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15), but was not home with Benjamin in 1840, so probably had married or died in the 1830's.

It is possible that this is Eliza (c1812) who was wife of Baswell Lee. I have no proof that Eliza was a Hensley, but she did have Thomas Hensley (c1828) with her in 1850. That doesn't prove she was his sister, but it is a possibility. See his entry below.

Unknown Daughter (1815/20). Benjamin Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and with him still in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20), but was not home with Benjamin in 1840, so probably had married or died in the 1830's.

Unknown Daughter (1815/20). Benjamin Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was not with him in 1820, but was with him in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20), and was still apparently home in 1840 (age 20-29, born ca 1810/20). She was not home with Benjamin in 1850, so probably had married or died in the 1840's.

Unknown Son (1815/20). Benjamin Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was with him in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and with him still in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20), but was not home with Benjamin in 1840, so probably had married or died in the 1830's.

I have no strong leads on who this son might have been.

Unknown Son (1820/25). Benjamin Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was with him in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), and still home in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25) but was not home with Benjamin in 1850, so probably had married or died in the 1840's.

This could be William Hensley (c1822) who was listed in 1860 Dekalb Co, TN. I have no additional data on him yet, but he fits. I did not find him in 1850. In 1860 he was living with the Thomas and Ellen (--?-) Sneed family in Dekalb County.

I have no additional data on William Hensley so far.

This is very likely Robert Hensley (c1825) who was living next door to Benjamin in 1850. I have no direct proof that they are father and son, but they were next door neighbors, and it does fit very well.

Mary Hensley was born ca 1824/25 in Tennessee (per 1850 and 1860 census) or in North Carolina (per 1880 census). She is a proven child of Benjamin, as he was living with her in 1860 and 1880 (which gave their relationship).  Mary was apparently home with her parents in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30) and still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).

Mary married Andrew J. Fite between 1840 and ca 1847 in Dekalb County, Tennessee. Andrew was listed as "John" in 1880, so perhaps his name is "Andrew John Fite". He was born ca 1823/24 in Tennessee. I don't know who his parents are.

Andrew and Mary were next door to her parents for the 1850 census in Dekalb County. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

They were in Dallas Co, AR in 1860 (see above for a transcript).

I don't have them in 1870 yet.

In 1880 they were still in Dallas County, Arkansas. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Unknown Daughter (1825/30). Benjamin Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was not with him in 1830, so possibly born ca 1830, after the census. She was with him in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30) but was not home with Benjamin in 1850, so probably had married or died in the 1840's.

Unknown Son (1825/30). Benjamin Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was with him in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30) but was not home with Benjamin in 1850, so probably had married or died in the 1840's.

This might very well be Thomas Hensley, born ca  1827/28 in TN.

There was a "Thomas Hindsly" age 22 just a few houses from Benjamin in 1850. He was residing with the Baswell Lee (c1821) and Eliza Lee (c1812) family. I suspect that this Thomas was Benjamin's son. The name was spelled differently, but Benjamin's was spelled different in every record I've found for him, so that is not a real obstacle. The Lee family, with Thomas residing with them were in 1850 Dekalb County, just 12 houses from Benjamin and Ruth Hensley. It is possible (but uncertain) that Eliza Lee could be Thomas' sister. No proof of that though.

Thomas Hensley married Martha E. --- sometime between 1850 and ca 1852 probably in Dekalb Co, TN.

Thomas also moved to Dallas County, Arkansas in the 1850's, so that seems more proof that he is Benjamin's son.

In 1860, Thomas and family were just a few houses from Benjamin Hensley, his father.
