Azariah Hensley (c1812) and Mary Ann --- and Margaret --- of Jackson Co, TN

I (Marty Grant) am not related to Azariah Hensley as far as I know.

Azariah Hensley was born ca 1811/12 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina (per 1850 census), county unknown.

I don't know who Azariah's parents are. He may be a son of Benjamin and Ruth Hensley who were near Azariah in 1840 in Jackson County, and they did have an apparent son his age, and Azariah did name one of his sons "Benjamin". This doesn't prove the connection though, but it is a good possibility. There was an older Azariah Hensley (c1800/10) who might be namesake for this one (but too young to be his father). The elder Azariah was from Caswell County, NC and later came to Tennessee. Perhaps the younger Azariah also originated in Caswell County, NC.

Azariah was probably with his parents for the 1820 census, and listed in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). He was born in North Carolina ca 1812, but there was plenty of time between then and 1820 for his family to have moved to Tennessee (assuming they did move there). Since I don't know if he was in NC or TN then, I can't narrow down possible parents. There were Hensleys in Jackson Co, TN already by 1820. One of the two listed there in 1820 was Enoch Hensley (c1774) who did have one apparent son the right age, but for various reasons I don't think this was Azariah's father.

Azariah was presumably with his parents for the 1830 census, and should be in the age 15-19 category (born ca 1810/15). He might have still been in North Carolina, or perhaps already in Jackson County, Tennessee by then. The 1830 census for Jackson County, Tennessee shows George Hensley (c1782) with an apparent son the age of Azariah. He could be Azariah's father, but I'm not betting on it.

Azariah Hensley married Mary Ann "Polly" --- before ca 1835, presumably in Jackson Co, TN. Polly Ann was born ca 1812/13 in Tennessee. I don't know her maiden name.

They were listed on the 1840 census in Jackson County just a couple of pages from Benjamin Hensley (c1776) who is a fairly good candidate to be Azariah's father. (In 1830, Benjamin did have an apparent son Azariah's age).

Azariah and family were still in Jackson County for the 1850 census. They were the only Hensley family in Jackson this year.

Azariah Hensley married Margaret --- between 1860 and ca 1863 in Jackson County. She was born ca 1831/32 in Tennessee. I don't know her maiden name.

They were listed on the 1870 census in Jackson County: Azariah Henesley-57 NC, Margaret-38 TN, Elizabeth A.-11 TN, David-6. (From "Hensley Households" by Laura Schreibman).

Azariah Hensley died between 1870 and 1880 in Jackson County, Tennessee. His widow Margaret was listed on the 1880 census in Jackson. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Children

Azariah and Mary "Polly Ann" had at least 8 children per the 1850 and 1860 census, and Azariah and Margaret apparently had 2 more. I don't have much additional information on any of these children so far. See the Register Report below for what I do have on them.
