Samuel Hensley was probably born in the 1760's or earlier. I
can't be more precise because I don't have enough early records to
base it on. He is a proven child of Benjamin Hensley as named in Benjamin's 1788 Will in Albemarle Co., VA. Samuel Hensley married Sibba (---) sometime before ca 1780, presumably in Albemarle Co., VA. She was born before 1765 (per her age on the 1810 census). I don't know her maiden name. Samuel Hensley is listed on the 1785 tax list for Albemarle with six whites in his household. Samuel Hensley is listed on the 1787 tax list in Albemarle Co., VA. He is also on the list of delinquent tax payers for 1787. On 17 Jan 1788 Benjamin Hensley made his Will in Albemarle and named, among others, his son Samuel Hensley. Samuel was also named as one of the Executors. Samuel Hensley is listed on the 1789 tax list for Albemarle. He was taxed for one white male over age 16. He had no slaves or horses. (Online at 1790 / 1800 Virginia Tax Lists Censuses). His brother William was on the same list. The 1790 census is lost for Virginia, however we know they were still in Albemarle then for they were listed together on a deed dated 4 Sep 1790. On that date Samuel Hensley and William Hensley (his brother, though not stated so here) sold 163 acres to James Atkinson for 100 pounds. The land was on both sides of Green Creek. The deed was signed by Samuel Hensley, Sibby Hensley, William Hensley and Elizabeth Hensley. (Albemarle Co., VA Deed Book 12, page 310, shared by Laura Schreibman) The above land must be land inherited from their father Benjamin Hensley who died in 1788. The 1800 census is lost for Virginia. The 1802 tax list for Albemarle shows "Saml Hensley & son Joseph" taxed for two free white males, four slaves over age 16, and five horses. Brother William was on the same list. (Online at 1790 / 1800 Virginia Tax Lists Censuses) Samuel Hensley died between 1802 and 1810 for Sibba was listed as head of household on the 1810 census in Albemarle Co., VA. She was the only Hensley in Albemarle at the time. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Albemarle Co., VA page 159 Sibba Hensley 11000-00211-0-0 Analysis: 1 males 10-15 (1794/1800) Son? 1 male 0-9 (1800/1810) Son? 1 Female 45+ (bef 1765) Sibba (---) Hensley (bef 1765) 1 Female 26-44 (1765/1784) Daughter? 2 females 16-25 (1784/1794) 1-Daughter? 2-Daughter? 0 Slaves Sibba may have died before 1820 for she wasn't listed on that census as far as I could find. She may have still been alive and living with one of her sons or daughters. Note: There is certain evidence that may indicate that Samuel didn't die before 1810 but rather left his wife and moved to Kentucky. There is a Samuel Hensley (1752-1830) who died in Pendleton Co., KY. Some evidence indicates he had lived in Albemarle Co., VA, and that he had a son Joseph by his first wife (and that fits also). Samuel (1752) had a son Samuel born ca 1804 in Albemarle Co., VA. It all adds up, but I'm hesitant to conclude the two Samuels are one and the same, though it appears they might be. See the page for Samuel Hensley (1752) and Mary Leak for more information on the "other" Samuel. |
Children of Samuel Hensley and Sibba (---). Samuel and Sibba are the proven parents of Joseph Hensley (per 1802 tax list). They seem to have other children but they are mostly unidentified. |
Unknown Daughter (1765/1784). Sibba Hensley had an apparent daughter this age with her in 1810 aged 26-44 (ca 1765/84). |
Unknown Daughter (1784/94). Sibba Hensley had two apparent daughters this age with her in 1810 aged 16-25 (1784/94). I don't know who this might be. |
Unknown Daughter (1784/94). Sibba Hensley had two apparent daughters this age with her in 1810 aged 16-25 (1784/94). I don't know who this might be. |
Joseph Hensley was born ca 1788 or
earlier, assuming he was at least 16 in 1802 when listed by name with
his father on the tax list that year. He was not with his widowed mother in 1810 unless listed in a younger age group by mistake. There is no Joseph Hensley listed on the 1810 census as a head of household, but the 1810 census is lost for many counties in Virginia. In 1820 there is an entry for a Joseph Hensley in Cabell Co., VA (now WV). His name is listed but all the enumerations are blank. That could be this same Joseph, but I don't know that for certain. |
Unknown Son (1794/1800). Sibba Hensley had
an apparent son this age with her in 1810 aged 10-15 (1794/1800). I don't know who this might be. |
Unknown Son (1800/10). Sibba Hensley had
an apparent son this age with her in 1810 aged under 10 (c1800/10). I don't know who this might be. |
