William Hensley was born ca 1761 or earlier. I base this on
several records. He appeared on a 1785 tax list and assuming he was at
least 16 then he would be born ca 1769 or earlier. His 1820 census
entry gave his age as 45 and up, or born before 1775. His proven
children include Benjamin born ca 1782. Assuming that William was at
least 21 when Benjamin was born, I come up with ca 1761 for his birth
date. He could be much older than that, but probably not much younger. William is probably a son of Benjamin Hensley and Miss Landers of Albemarle Co., VA, but this isn't proven. Benjamin left a Will in 1788 but didn't mention William by name, though he did mention the "rest of my children" which could include William. See Benjamin's page for additional reasoning for placing William as his son. They were associated as the records below will show. William Hensley married Elizabeth Appleberry before ca 1782, presumably in Albemarle Co., VA or possibly somewhere else. I have no primary evidence for her maiden name, but some information is gleaned from the book A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri, William S. Bryan, 1876, p. 267:
The above book is online at <University of Missouri Digital Library>. The wife of Thomas Hensley was apparently the source for the information. I would suspect she would know her mother-in-laws proper maiden name, so I believe it to be correct. William Hensley is listed on the 1785 tax list for Albemarle Co., VA and taxed for 6 whites. That would be himself, his wife Elizabeth, son Benjamin and three others unknown. On 20 May 1785 John Wilkinson deeded 120 acres to William Hensley of Albemarle for 5. The land was described as being on William Thurmond's line. Witnesses were John Eubanks, Benjamin Kidd and Benjamin Hensley. (Albemarle Co., VA Deed Book 9 page 118, shared by Laura Schreibman) The above deed shows that William was associated with Benjamin, who I think is his father. William is listed on the 1787 Albemarle County tax list. He is also on the list of delinquent taxpayers for that year. William Hensley is listed on the 1789 tax list for Albemarle. He was taxed for one white male over age 16 and three horses. He had no slaves. (Online at 1790 / 1800 Virginia Tax Lists Censuses). His brother Samuel was on the same list. On 4 Sep 1790 Samuel Hensley and William Hensley of Albemarle Co., VA sold 163 acres on both sides of Green Creek to James Atkinson for 100. The deed was signed by Samuel Hensley, Sibby Hensley, William Hensley and Elizabeth Hensley. (Albemarle Co., VA Deed Book 12, page 310 shared by Laura Schreibman) On 10 Jun 1798 William Hensley and Elizabeth Hensley sold 120 acres to Benjamin Johnson for 10. The land was on Cove Creek on William Eubanks line. (Shared by Laura Schreibman, no book and page reference) The 1790 and 1800 census records are lost for Virginia. William Hensley "and son James" are listed together on the 1802 Albemarle tax list, which proves James is his son. Brother Samuel is on the same list. (Online at 1790 / 1800 Virginia Tax Lists Censuses) I wasn't able to find William Hensley on the 1810 census. He didn't seem to be in Albemarle that year, nor was he listed in Kanawha where he later moved. They may have been residing in one of the several counties for which the 1810 census is lost. William and his sons Benjamin, William Jr., Thomas and James Hensley are all listed on the 1820 census in Kanawha Co., VA (now WV). Samuel Hensley (c1794), relationship unknown was also listed. (Shared by Laura Schreibman, no book or page reference) On 5 Jul 1822 William Hensley deeded 100 acres to Daniel Milton on Harcon Creek for $100. Witnesses were Elisha Milton, Fleming Hensley, W. Hensley and Benjamin Hensley. (Shared by Laura Schreibman, no book or page reference) On the same date William deeded 100 acres to William Hensley, Jr. (Shared by Laura Schreibman, no book or page reference) On 11 Jul 1823 William Hensley and wife Elizabeth made several deeds of gift to their children in Kanawha Co., VA, for slaves and land. They gave to "my son Fleming Hensley" a slave and land on Harmon's Creek. They gave to James Hensley land a slave. They gave to son William slave. They gave to son Thomas a slave and to daughter Judith Henderson a slave. (Shared by Laura Schreibman, no book or page reference) On the same date (11 Jul 1823) William Hensley deed 40 acres to John Henderson for $40 on Harmon's Creek. Most of his children had all moved away by this time, but I don't know if he did too, or if he died in Kanawha in the 1820's. My guess is that William and Elizabeth both died after 1823, but before 1830, and probably in Kanawha Co., VA (now WV). I could be mistaken about that. |

The 1823 deeds of gift prove five children (Fleming, James, William,
Thomas and Judith). The 1876 book (quoted earlier) names those five
plus two more Benjamin and Elizabeth. That leaves only Benjamin and Elizabeth without a primary source. I
suspect that since Thomas Hensley's wife was the source for the
article, that she would know who her sisters-in-law were, so I'm sure
Elizabeth is part of this family, but I know nothing else about her so
far. There is a Samuel Hensley (c1794) who also lived in Kanawha at the same time as William and family, and he may be related. In fact his own death record lists his father's name as William, but it lists his mother as "Martha" and his birth place as Kentucky. This doesn't fit with William and Elizabeth's family, so it would appear Samuel isn't a direct part of it.
