Samuel Hensley was born ca 1794/95 per his age on the 1850 census (55). He was born in Kentucky according to the same source as well as his death record. I don't know what county.

Samuel Hensley is a son of William Hensley and Martha (---) according to his death record. I don't know who they are as of yet. William Hensley and wife Elizabeth Appleberry moved to Kanawha Co., VA (now WV) around the same time as Samuel, but they don't seem to be his parents. They never lived in Kentucky as far as I can tell either.

The 1800 census for Kentucky and Virginia are both lost, so I can't use them to find the various William Hensleys that would be listed therein. The 1810 census shows several William Hensleys in Kentucky. If Samuel was home with his parents then, he would be about 15 years old, so he should be in either the 10-15 age group (born ca 1794/1800) or the 16-25 group (c1784/94). There is a William Hensley in Floyd Co., KY but he has no sons in either of those age groups. There is also one in Franklin Co., KY, but he has no sons of the appropriate age. There is a William in Montgomery Co., KY who has one boy age 10-15, but I don't think he is the one, though it is possible. There were no William Hensleys listed in the 1810 census in the part of Virginia that later became West Virginia, though that census is lost for several counties, but not Kanawha.

Samuel Hensley is listed on the 1820 census in Kanawha Co., VA living by himself. There are several other Hensleys listed, but the list is alphabetical so I can't tell if they were all neighbors or not. There were two Williams listed, one age 45 and up (born before 1775), which is, I think William Hensley who married Elizabeth Appleberry, and not Samuel's parents. The other William is aged 26-44 (born ca 1775/94), who is William Hensley (c1788) son of the other William, and too young to be father of Samuel (c1795). The other Hensleys in 1820 Kanawha include Thomas Hensley (c1796) (son of William & Elizabeth); Benjamin Hensley (c1782) brother of Thomas; and James Hensley (c1789), another brother.

Therefore all the other Hensleys in Kanawha in 1820 are William Hensley and Elizabeth Appleberry and their sons. Samuel fits in that family age-wise, but the other children were born in Albemarle Co., VA, whereas Samuel was born in Kentucky. Even though Samuel's father is listed as "William" on his death record, his mother is listed as "Martha" and not Elizabeth. Therefore it seems likely that Samuel isn't part of that family, at least not a son, he could be a close cousin.

Samuel Hensley married Cynthia (---) sometime between 1820 and ca 1828. She was born ca 1806/07 per her age in 1850 (43), somewhere in Virginia, now West Virginia. I don't know her maiden name.

They are on the 1830 census in Kanawha Co., VA. The William Hensley and Elizabeth Appleberry children had all moved away by this time, except their son Benjamin Hensley (c1782). They were joined by John Hensley (c1780), Benjamin's uncle. The census was again alphabetical, so it is impossible to say if Samuel lived near the other Hensleys.

Samuel and family are listed on the 1850 census in Kanawha County. There is only one other Hensley in Kanawha at the time (Aaron Hensley-1806) and they are not listed near each other.

They are on the 1860 census in Kanawha. The only other Hensley listed is their son James M. Hensley, though he isn't listed nearby. Several Price children are living with the family, they may be orphaned grandchildren.

Samuel Hensley is also listed on the 1860 census slave schedule with 9 slaves.

Samuel Hensley died on 4 Apr 1862 in Kanawha Co., VA (now WV). His death record listed him as 74 years old, born in Kentucky, parents William and Martha Hensley. His wife "Cintha" was the informant.

Cynthia and the children are listed on the 1870 census in Kanawha. The Price children are all gone by this time, but an Andrew Price was living with them. I don't know what the connection is to the Price family.

I wasn't able to find Cynthia on the 1880 census, she may have died by then.

Children of Samuel Hensley and Cynthia (---). The 1830 through 1870 census records show many children for Samuel and Cynthia. Most are identified, but a few aren't. There may be an unknown daughter who married a Price, for there were several Price children living with the family in 1860.
