Benjamin Hensley was born ca 1781/82 per his age on the 1850
census (68). He was born somewhere in Virginia (per 1850 census)
probably in Albemarle Co., VA which is where his younger brother was
born in 1794, and where Benjamin married in 1802. Benjamin is a probable son of William Hensley and Elizabeth Appleberry. They came from Albemarle Co., VA to Kanawha Co., VA (now WV) together, and were associated there. Benjamin is mentioned in the book A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri, William S. Bryan, 1876, p. 267:

Nothing else was said about Benjamin, but that is probably because he didn't follow the family to Missouri, but remained in West Virginia. Harriet Rust Hensley was the informant for the article. She was Benjamin's sister-in-law, married to Thomas A. Hensley (1794), therefore we can be pretty sure she would know who her husband's siblings were. The only question is whether she was referring to the same Benjamin Hensley or not. I think she was, for he did live in the same county (Kanawha) with Thomas and the others before they moved to Missouri. Benjamin Hensley obtained a marriage bond on 6 Dec 1802 in Albemarle Co., VA to marry Polly Melton (or Milton). William Melton was bondsman. I would assume he was either Mary's father or a brother. Mary "Polly" Melton was born ca 1784/85 in Virginia, possibly Albemarle County. I didn't find them on the 1810 census. They were not listed in Albemarle Co., VA or Kanawha County either. They may have been residing in one of the several counties for which the 1810 census is lost. There is a Benjamin Hensley in next door Buckingham Co., VA in 1810. The age is right, but I don't know if it is the same Benjamin or not. Benjamin is listed on the 1820 census in Kanawha Co., VA (now WV). His father William Hensley, and Benjamin's brothers William Jr., Thomas and James Hensley were listed there as well. Samuel Hensley (c1794), relationship unknown was also listed. He has two slaves and two horses. Putnam County was formed in 1848 from part of Kanawha and other counties. The Hensleys fell into the new county or else moved there before 1850. They are listed in Putnam for the 1850 census. Probable sons Winston Hensley (c1819) and William Hensley (c1808) are very close by. Benjamin is also on the 1850 census slave schedule with four slaves.
They are in Putnam Co., VA for the 1860 census, listed between the households of their probable sons William and Winston. The census taker only used initials, so I'm not sure who the M. Hensley (c1839) is that is with them, though almost certainly a grandson. Benjamin is also listed on the 1860 census slave schedule with 8 slaves.
I wasn't able to find them on the 1870 census in Putnam or elsewhere. Perhaps both Benjamin and Mary died in the 1860's. |
