Winston Hensley was born ca 1818/19 per his age on the 1850
census (31). He was born somewhere in Virginia (per 1850 census)
probably in Kanawha Co., VA (now Putnam Co., WV). Winston is probably a son of Benjamin Hensley (c1782) and Mary Melton who were his neighbors. I have no direct proof that they were his parents, but it seems likely. Winston would have been about 1 year old for the 1820 census. Benjamin was in Kanawha that year with 2 sons in the under 10 age group (born ca 1810/20). One of them may be Winston. Winston would have been about 11 for the 1830 census. Benjamin Hensley was in Kanawha then and had one apparent son aged 10-14 (born ca 1815/20). That is probably Winston. In 1840 Winston would have been about 21 years old. Benjamin was in Kanawha, but didn't have a son that age. He had one aged 15-19 (c1820/25) which is probably Winston for Benjamin had no son that age back in 1830, so it is probably him with his age off slightly. Winston Hensley married Emily C. (---) in the 1840's, before ca 1847 in Kanawha Co., VA. She was born ca 1826/27 in Virginia (both per 1850 census). Her 1870 census entry listed her birth place as Kentucky, while her 1880 entry showed Ohio. I don't know her maiden name. Putnam County was formed in 1848 from part of Kanawha and other counties. The Hensleys fell into the new county or else moved there before 1850. They are listed in Putnam for the 1850 census. Probable brother William Hensley (c1808) is next door and probable parents Benjamin and Mary are three houses away.
They are in Putnam Co., VA for the 1860 census, next door to his parents and two houses from brother William. The census taker only listed initials.
They are still in Putnam for the 1870 census, though no other Hensley are listed nearby.
Winston Hensley died in the 1870's. At some point in the 1870's the family moved west to Texas Co., MO, though I don't know if it was before or after Winston's death, so I don't know where he died. They are on the 1880 census in Texas Co., MO.
I don't know when Emily died, though obviously after 1880. |
