The author (Marty Grant) is not related to William Hensley as far as can be determined. He did live in the same county (Knox Co, TN) as my ancestor Samuel Hensley (1801-1852), though born after he left there.

William Hensley was born ca 1834/35 per age of 15 on the 1850 census. He was born in Tennessee, perhaps in Knox County where he was living in 1850.

I don't know who William Hensley's parents are. In fact the only record I have for him is the 1850 census entry.

William would presumably have been home with his parents for the 1840 census. Anthony Hensley (c1791) was the only Hensley in Knox County that year, and he did have two unidentified sons with him aged under 5 (born ca 1835-40). That fits, but based only on this there is no way to know if it is William or someone else. I have tentatively assigned a different William Hensley (c1829) as a son of Anthony, so if correct, that would exclude this one. I can't say for sure either way though.

In 1850 William was living in Knox County with Elcana Shipe and his family. They could be related to him, or he might just be hired help. His occupation is listed as "laborer" but that doesn't preclude him being related to them.

This census entry is all we have for William, however, it does provide one interesting clue: They are only 21 households away from Louinda Hensley (c1831 TN) who was living with a Johnson family. Could William and Louinda be siblings? Certainly, but no real proof of that. See her page for more on her.

Who were the Shipes? Elcanah H. Shipe married Margaret Major on 6 Oct 1846 in Knox County. I know of no connection between the Hensleys and either the Shipe or Major families.

I was unable to find William Hensley on the 1860 census, nor did I find a marriage record for him in Knox Co., TN.
