I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to the Henry James family. I am very interested in him though.
Henry James was born 24 Apr 1810 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC (per 1850 census).
I suspect that he may be a son of Thomas James, but have no real proof of that. Henry James and family lived in Leggett Township of Marion County.
According to W.W. Sellers in his History of Marion County, South Carolina, 1902, page 504, Henry James had a daughter named Sarah Ann who married Henry Flowers.
Here is what Sellers wrote about Henry James (page 502) in the Flowers family write-up (anything in brackets [...] was added by me):
... Henry Flowers [son of Love Flowers and Martha Baxley] married Sarah Ann James, a daughter of Henry James; he died in prison, in Elmira, NY, 1864; he left a number of children. ...
That is about all I've found in Sellers work about the Henry James family. I don't know how accurate the above information is. Sellers work, while amazing and incredibly valuable, does contain some errors, so it is best, when possible, to find confirmation from other sources. Henry Flowers (mentioned above) was still at home with his parents in 1850, but Henry James had no daughter named "Sarah Ann" with him in 1850, so I don't know where she might have been, or if Sellers was mistaken about her being his daughter. There was a "Samuel" age 11 (born ca 1838/39) in 1850, and in 1840 there was a girl age 0-4 (1835/40) with Henry, but no boy that age. I haven't found anything on "Samuel" after 1850, so I have to wonder if that was actually Sarah, just transcribed wrong.
Henry James married Sithney --- ca 1830/39 in Marion Dist, SC. Her name was listed differently on later census records, though the ages were consistent. In 1860 she was "Setheria" and in 1870 she was "Sithna" and in 1880 "Sithley". It is obvious that the 1860, 1870 and 1880 listings are for the same person, but is the 1850 census record the same person (showing her as "Sarah")? She was born 18 Dec 1818 (per tombstone), in Marion District, SC. I have not found her maiden name yet.
Henry James was listed on the 1840 census, but his household doesn't seem consistent with later records. There was no one Sarah's age with him, either indicating she was a 2nd wife, or that it was just a mistake. Their oldest child Samuel, born ca 1838/39 apparently wasn't listed either.

Henry and family were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. On this census, they were just three houses from Henry L. James and just 5 from Pinkney J. James. I don't know how they are all related.

Henry and family were listed on the 1870 census in Marion Co, SC in Legette Township. On this census, they were just two houses from Ann James, widow of Henry L. James. I don't know who Mary and Sesia Ann Flowers are, but they were with Henry in 1870. Probably grand children.

Henry and family were still in Legette Township in 1880. Once again, Ann, widow of Henry L. James was two houses away. At this time she was remarried though (to Barney Flowers). A Sinthy J. Flowers was with Henry in 1880, listed as granddaughter. She is probably a child of Sarah James and Henry Flowers.

Sithney --- James died on 5 Oct 1882, and Henry James died on 8 Jul 1898. They are buried at Reedy Creek in Marion County.
Children of Henry and Sarah are proven by the various census records, and one child (Sarah Ann) mentioned in Sellers book.
Sarah Ann James was born ca 1835/40 in Marion Dist, SC. She married Henry Flowers per Sellers. She was not at home with her parents in 1850, though Henry Flowers was still at home with his. Henry Flowers died during the Civil War; and in 1870 and 1880 there were Flowers children with Henry James, presumably connected to Henry Flowers and Sarah James.
Samuel James was born ca 1838/39 in Marion Dist, SC. He was listed on the 1850 census. There was no male his age with the family on the 1840 census, so based on other information, I have to wonder if this is a mistake. The 1850 record for Henry James family had several apparent mistakes. This could actually have been Sarah Ann James listed above. A Samuel James was not found on the 1860 or later census.
Gadi T. James was born July 1841 in Marion Dist, SC. On the 1850 census, he was home with his parents, but mistakenly listed as "George". He was still at home in 1860. For the Civil War, Gadi enlisted in Company L, 10th Regiment Infantry (per Sellers, page 601) as a Private. Between 1860 and 1867, he married Martha E. --- in Marion Dist, SC. They were listed on the 1870 census in Marion Co, SC, in Legette Township, just three houses from his parents. There were several Brown children listed with them, possibly indicating that Martha had been previously married, to a Mr. Brown.

Matthew James was born ca 1843/44 in Marion Dist, SC. He was at home with his parents in 1850. I have no further record of him after that.
John H. James was born January 1847 in Marion Dist, SC. He was at home with his parents in 1850 and 1860. He was called into service in the last group of Marion District Militia. These were typically very young or very old men called up near the end of the Civil war (1865). (History of Marion County, South Carolina, W.W. Sellers, 1902, page 645). He was still at home with his parents in 1870. Around 1879/1880 he married Elizabeth ---. They were listed in Marion in Legette Township on the 1880 census. No children yet, indicating they had probably just recently married.

Daniel Preston James was born ca 1853/54 in Marion Dist, SC. He was at home with his parents in 1860 and 1870. His age in those two listings was 6 and 16 respectively, but in 1880 he was still home with his parents, but then he was listed as age 22, or born ca 1857/58. The 1900 census shows his birth as July 1859. I can't reconcile these dates as of yet. I trust the 1860 and 1870 census more than the later ones, since his parents probably were reporting his age.
They were listed in Legette Township for the 1900 census. Note that Maggie is listed as Maggie "Travis" although her actual middle name is "Francis" (per tombstone) or more likely "Frances" (the common feminine spelling of this name.) I re-checked the census to make sure I read it correctly, and perhaps the census taker was trying to write "Francis" but he didn't do a very good job. (Thanks to Stan Pathel for pointing this out.)
