I (Marty Grant) am a Great Great Great Grandson of Pinkney J. James and Sophia J James.

Pinkney J. James was born 25 Nov 1816 in Marion Dist, SC, though I don't know what section he was from. He later lived in Legette and Reaves Township. Pinkney J. James is probably a son of James James, though I have no solid proof to back that up. (Thanks to Terry Britt for this information, unfortunately Terry passed away before she could explain how she came to this conclusion. She'll be missed, she was not only a cousin of mine, but a classmate of my mom and dad, Mullins High class of 1964!)

Pinkney married Sophie J. --- before 1840 in Marion Dist, SC. I don't have any clues for her maiden name, though the "J" initial may be for her maiden name, if not a middle name.

Pinkney was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC near Robert James, Henry James and Malachi James. This places them roughly within Marion or Legette Township. I don't know how all these families are related.

Pinkney James and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion County. Robert James was the nearest James family, but two or three pages away. This was still in the Legette Township area.

Pinkney and family were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. On this census, he was two houses from Henry L. James and just five from Henry James. I don't know how (or if) all of these are related, but they seem to be. This puts them still in Legette Township.

I didn't find a record for Civil War Service for Pinkney James, but he was over the normal age for service. His son William P. James did serve (see his listing below).

For some reason, Pinkney J. James (and several of his neighbors) were not listed on the 1870 census in Marion County. They should have been in Legette or Reaves Township, but were missed somehow.

On 25 Nov 1870 Pinkney James purchased a one acre lot "near depot of Mullins" from Alexander Deaver. (Marion County, SC Deed Book FF page 423).

Pinkney and family were found on the 1880 census in Reaves Township. This census reports Sophie's birth place as NC (as well as her parents' place of birth). However, the 1850 and 1860 census give "SC" for her. She died before the 1900 census, so we don't have another record.

Sophie J. James died either on 30 Dec 1893 or 1 Jan 1894. Her tombstone gives "Dec 30, 1893", but her death was reported in the Diary of Simeon Campbell as "Jan 1st 1894".  She is buried in the McMillan Cemetery just east of Mullins.

Pinkney James married Sarah M. --- ca 1894/95 in Marion Co, SC. They were listed on the 1900 census in Reaves Township.

Pinkney J. James died on 3 Aug 1907 in Marion Co, SC. His death was reported in the Diary of Simeon Campbell and also on his tombstone. He is buried in the McMillan Cemetery just east of Mullins.

I don't know what became of Pinkney's 2nd wife Sarah.

Children

Children of Pinkney J. James and Sophie J --- are proven by the various census records.

Laura Virginia James (1840)

Clarissa James (c1843)

William P. James (c1845)

Eliza J. James (c1847)

Sarah James (c1850)

Mary E. James (c1852)

Elly A. James (c1854)

Susan James (c1858)

Sarah Ella James (1860)

Laura Virginia James was born 12 May 1840 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Legette Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. She married Daniel Joyner Turner circa 1867/68 in Marion Dist, SC. They are both buried in the McMillan Cemetery just east of Mullins. See Daniel Turner's page for more information.

Clarissa James was born ca 1842/43 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Legette Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census, but gone by 1860. She probably had married or died by then.

William P. James was born ca 1844/45 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Legette Township. He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

For the Civil War he enlisted in Company L, 21st Regiment Infantry, SC Volunteers, as a Private. He was discharged Jan 26, 1863 (reason not stated). (Per Sellers, page 575)

Sellers also mentioned that William P. James was still living at the time he was writing the book (1898). Even though he was still alive (per Sellers), I have no record of him after his Civil War service. I didn't find him in 1870, 1880 or 1900 Marion Co, SC census records. It is possible he was in a neighboring county, and this was known to Sellers (but he didn't mention it).

Eliza J. James was born ca 1846/47 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Legette Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. In 1850 she was listed as "Emma". In 1860 she was "Eliza J." I have no record of her after 1860.

Sarah James was born ca 1850 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Legette Township. In 1850 she was home with her parents and listed as three months old. She wasn't there in 1860, so probably had died before then. They named another daughter Sarah later on, so that makes it seem very likely that this one had died young.

Mary E. James was born ca 1851/52 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Legette Township. She was home with her parents for the 1860 census. The entire family was missing in 1870, but she was still with them in 1880. She wasn't with them in 1900, so probably had died or married before then.

Elly A. James was born ca 1853/54 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Legette Township. He was home with his parents for the 1860 census. The entire family was missing in 1870.

Sometime before 1878 Elly James married Alice ---. They were listed on the 1880 census in Marion Co, SC in Reaves Township.

Susan James was born ca 1857/58 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Legette Township. She was home with her parents for the 1860 census. The entire family was missing in 1870, but she was not with them in 1880, so probably had died or married before then.

Sarah Ella James was born 29 May 1860 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Legette Township. She was not listed on the 1860 census with her parents, unless she was the 2 year old listed as "Susan" (see above). The Pinkney James family was not found on the 1870 census. Sarah married Franklin Rogers before 1875 in Marion Co, SC. They were listed on the 1880 census together and separately. Sarah was listed with her father on this census, and with one daughter named Lula, age 5. However, the Franklin Rogers family was also listed elsewhere (also in Reaves township) with two children listed, and wife "Ella", but it is clear from their tombstones (in McMillan Cemetery) that Sarah and Ella are the same person, and Franklin Rogers was her husband. I'm not sure why they had two listings in 1880 unless they were temporarily separated for some reason, or perhaps Sarah was just staying with her parents for some reason or another for a short while.

Sarah Ella James' stone says: "Ella James, wife of Franklin Rogers 29 May 1860 - 25 May 1935".
