[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Jonathan Jenkins, but I'm sure he is somehow closely related to my ancestor Osborne Jenkins (c1803).
Jonathan Jenkins was born 6 Mar 1741 (Old Style Calendar) which is actually 1742 by our modern calendar (the new year started April 1st in the old calendar system in use before 1752). This should be represented today as 6 Mar 1741/1742. His birth date was recorded in a Family Register made by his father on 2 Jul 1745 recorded in Onslow County, NC Deed Book B page 21.
Jonathan is a proven son of Thomas Jenkins (c1716) and Margaret --- as proven by the afore mentioned Register of births.
On 8 Jul 1758, Jonathan Jenkins and his father Thomas Jenkins witnessed a deed from Thomas Albritton to John Simpson. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book E Page 45, from Records of Onslow County, North Carolina, Vol I by Zae Harget Gwynn, and all subsequent deeds cited on this page are from this book or Vol II, except for those in Deed Books 23 and later which I abstracted myself from the original Deed Books).
Sometime, possibly in the 1760's, Jonathan Jenkins married Ellender ---, presumably in Onslow County. I don't know her maiden name.
Jonathan Jenkins was listed on the 1769 Onslow County Tax List.
On 27 May 1775, Jonathan Jenkins and William Pollock witnessed a deed from Jacob Stout to William Wheeler. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book J Page 78).
On 9 Oct 1775, Jonathan was mentioned in his father's estate record. In Thomas Jenkins's Estate, a division was made to Mrs. Margaret Jenkins (Thomas's widow) and "her son" Jonathan Jenkins. (Onslow County Loose Estates - Thomas Jenkins - 1775, North Carolina Archives)
On 6 Oct 1779, Jonathan Jenkins, Planter, received two deeds from Henry Rhodes. The first was for 50 acres on Muddy Creek, and the second was for 100 acres on Mill Creek. Both were witnessed by James Gray and Solomon Ward. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book M Page 8).
On 12 Oct 1779, a deed was made by Ellender Jenkins to Solomon Ward, described as being 6/8ths of something, being 1/3 part of her dower lands. This deed was acknowledged by Jonathan Jenkins, and witnessed by Woodhouse Rhodes and George Devaul. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book M Page 7).
On the same date (12 Oct 1779), Jonathan Jenkins sold 300 acres to Solomon Ward, described as being on the south side of Southwest Branch of New River at Edward Masborn's, part of a 640 acre tract granted to Masbourn by Governor Johnston. Witnessed by Henry Rhodes and James Gray. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book M Page 7).
ON 13 Jan 1783, Jonathan Jenkins made his Will in Onslow County. He named his wife Ellender and "all the children", but did not mention their names. He named his wife and James Gray and Jonathan Murray as Executors. Witnesses were William Brown, Nancy Brown and William Roach. The Will was proven on 31 May 1783 so he had died by then. (Onslow Co, NC Will Book 2 Page 88).
His estate record does not include a list of heirs, but one record dated 12 Apr 1796 shows that a Guardian Bond was made by Daniel Jenkins, Nathaniel Loomis and John Gibson, for Daniel Jenkins to be guardian of Elen Jenkins (also listed in same record as Helen Jenkins), minor orphan of Jonathan Jenkins. (Onslow Co, NC Loose Estates - Jonathan Jenkins - 1785 North Carolina Archives).
Ellender was listed on one record (no date), but apparently from 1785 in her role as Executor of Jonathan's Estate. That is the last I have found for her.
Jonathan Jenkins and wife Ellender --- had one proven child, Helen (or "Elen") Jenkins, and probably were also the parents of Daniel and Elisha Jenkins. Daniel and Elisha are proven brothers, and Daniel was guardian for Helen Jenkins, so that seems to tie them all together. There may be other children, but I have not identified any of them yet.
Daniel Jenkins was born between 1755 and ca 1770, in Onslow Co, NC. He is not a proven son of Jonathan Jenkins, but I strongly suspect he was Jonathan's son, for he was named as Guardian to Jonathan's daughter Helen in 1796, and typically an older brother (if old enough) was named guardian to his younger siblings.
Daniel married Sarah Waltom in the 1790's. See their own page for additional information.
Elisha Jenkins was born between ca 1755 and ca 1774 (per the 1800 census, assuming he was the "extra" male with brother Daniel Jenkins that year), in Onslow Co, NC. He is not a proven son of Jonathan Jenkins, but I strongly suspect he was Jonathan's son, mainly because he is a proven brother to Daniel, as so named in Daniel's Will of 1804.
I have only two records for Elisha. He did not appear on the 1790, 1800 census, at least not in Onslow County. He was named in the Will of his brother Daniel Jenkins dated 7 Mar 1804. (Onslow Co, NC Will Book A page 65).
He did not appear on the 1810 census as far as I've found.
On 23 Dec 1816, Elisha Jenkins deeded property to Thomas Mills. Witnessed by Joseph Mills. I have not seen the details of this deed yet, so I'm not sure where Elisha got any land or if this deed was for land or other property. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book 7 page 243).
That is the last record I've found for Elisha Jenkins.
Helen Jenkins was born between ca 1776 and 1783 in Onslow County. I base this on a 1796 record naming her as a "minor" which means under the age of 21. If she was 20 in 1796, she was born no earlier than 1776, and since her father died 1783, she was born no later than that.
She was named in her father's Estate record in a Guardian Bond where her presumed brother Daniel Jenkins was made her guardian. (Onslow Co, NC Loose Estates - Jonathan Jenkins - 1785 North Carolina Archives).
She was named again on 1 Jan 1799 in the Guardian Accounts with Daniel Jenkins who paid for her schooling in 1797. (Onslow Co, NC Guardian Accounts and Bonds 1780-1860).
On 3 Aug 1802, Eli Ellis deeded a negro girl named "Cate" to Elon Jenkins. Witnesses were Daniel Jenkins (brother) and Isaac Jarrott. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book 4 page 11).
This was the last record I have for her.
