Genealogy > Johnson/Johnston
Welcome to my Johnson genealogy pages. I am
interested in the Johnson surname in Horry Co., South Carolina and in
neighboring Marion Co., SC. Since this is one of the most common
surnames my interest is strictly limited to these two counties (and to
Marion's "child" counties to some extent, namely Florence and Dillon).
My
old Johnson Pages
- I created web pages for many of the Johnson families. These are old
and way out of date, but they do still contain useful information, so
I've left them online for now, pending transfering all the data to my
new database. Keep in mind that they haven't been updated in years. Refer to my newer pages
before offering any "corrections."
Johnson Family Pages - Each Johnson family has their own web page, complete with all documentation I've found so far. The link will take you to the surname index. Find the "Johnson" surname and click on it and an index of all individuals will be displayed. Or you can use the search engine (to the left) to find a specific family or person.
What's New - Recent updates.
My Ancestry (two distinct lines, unrelated to each other as far as
can be determined):
11 Jul 2018 - Reformatted main Johnson page. 30 Jun 2018 - (1) Edited
family of Zachariah Johnson (1849-aft 1900) and wife Nancy Virginia
Burbage, prompted by email from Susan Denard. I had Nancy's MN as
Singleton because her mother is Mary J. Singleton as proven by several
sources. However, upon closer examination of 1850, 1860 and later
censuses, it seems Mary was either a widow Singleton, or a single
mother Singleton by 1850. Joseph A. Burbage (c1810 VA), schoolmaster,
was living with her in 1850 at which time she had a 1 year old son
(also named Joseph Burbage). She had Nancy Virginia in 1851. Joseph A.
Burbage vanishes from the record after that, yet Mary remains a
Singleton on all subsequent records, so it seems she and Mr. Burbage
didn't marry, or else did and then divorced. (2) Also edited family of Zachariah R. Johnson (1864) and wife Nancy M. Skipper, since I initially thought that's who Susan was asking about. Added some census record abstracts through 1940. See this
page and this
one and this
one and this
one for the above families.
