I (Marty Grant) am a 6th Great Grandson of John Miller and Mary Faber.
Much data is recorded about this family in "The Millers of Ashe County, NC" by Danny L. Miller as well as in the Moravian records of North Carolina. His Moravian Obituary (called a "Lebenslauf") contains some very interesting information on John and his family. Thanks to Cecilia Brown for sharing a transcription of the Lebenslauf, and thanks to Danny Miller for his work on this family.
Johannes Muller (later "John Miller") was born 25 Mar 1726 (per his obituary) in Pennsylvania (per obituary). I dont know what county he was born in, but in 1726 there were only three counties in Pennsylvania: Bucks, Chester and Philadelphia. These counties were much larger then than they are now, but John must have been born within the bounds of one of them.
I dont know who Johns parents were, but his obituary records that his parents had moved to Pennsylvania from Germany. Bergelbach and Nashau were mentioned. Nashua must be the state of Nassau and Bergelbach must be a town or county or other division. Ive not been successful in locating this area on a map of present day Germany.
John married Maria Magdelena Faber in 1746 (per obituary) presumably in Pennsylvania. Her parents were Michael Faber and Sarah Meinhert formerly of Baden, Germany.
At some point after marriage the family moved to New River which rises in western NC and flows north into south western Virginia. Im not sure where they lived exactly along that river, but by 1755 the French and Indian War drove them to Bethebara, the Moravian Settlement in what was then Rowan County, North Carolina. It was there (according the Lebenslauf) that John converted and joined the Moravian church. Sometime afterwards he moved to South Fork near Muddy Creek.
John Miller was listed on the 1768 Rowan County, NC tax list.
John Miller and family became members of the Friedberg Society (Moravian Church) when it was organized in 1770. This church is just across the Rowan County border in present day Davidson County.
John Miller was listed on the 1773 Rowan County tax list and taxed for 3 polls, himself and sons Henry and Michael Miller.
On 12 Feb 1780 John Miller made his Will in Rowan County, NC. He mentioned his wife but didnt list her name. He named his oldest son Henry and son Michael. He also named grandson John Henry Miller. Witnesses were Adam Spach, George Landman, and John Daner. Although they werent mentioned by name, John and wife had 13 children as proven by his obituary and other Moravian records.
John Miller died on 14 Feb 1780 (per obituary) and buried at the Friedberg Cemetery in present day Davidson County, NC. His marker says "John Muller D: 1780". Linda Watford (now deceased) found his grave several years ago and sent me a photograph of it.
Widow Mary was listed on the 1790 census as head of household in Rowan County. I don't know who the 2nd of the two older boys is. One of them must be Joseph (1773), and I once thought the other was Valentine (1766), but he is actually listed nearby in his own household, so I don't know who this might be with Mary in 1790.

I did not find her on the 1810 census.
Maria Magdelena Faber Miller died in 1813 in Rowan, now Davidson County, NC. She is buried at Friedberg also (but not near John). Her tombstone says "Maria Muller D: 1813". If she had a Lebenslauf I have not seen it yet.
John Miller and Mary Faber had 13 children as stated in Johns obituary and other records. I have the names from Danny Millers book. Several of them are proven by Moravian records that Ive seen, but I dont know what the evidence for the rest is. The number matches that given in Johns obituary so Im sure the list is accurate, Im just not sure what the original sources for their names and birth dates are. Two sons are proven by a tax record and the same two are also proven by John's Will of 1780. A grandson is named in that will but I'm not sure who his parents were but I have an idea.
Valentine "Felty" Miller (1766)
Henry Miller was born 23 Oct 1751 (source?) either in Pennsylvania or possibly on the New River in Virginia. He is a proven son of John Miller by the 1768 and 1773 tax lists and by John's 1780 Will which names Henry as his oldest son.
Henry Miller (1751) had a brother-in-law also named Henry Miller so it will be difficult to keep their records sorted out.
Henry Miller was listed on the 1768 Rowan County, NC tax list in the household of his father John Miller. He was only about 17 at that time so still at home, but taxable.
Henry Miler was listed on the 1773 Rowan County tax list with his father John Miller.
From this point forward my data on Henry is scarce. There were two Henry Miller's listed on the 1790 census in Rowan County, and two still there in 1800. One of these is likely this Henry and the other his brother-in-law, also named Henry Miller. It is also possible that this Henry had moved away from the area by this time but I don't know for sure.
Henry Miller married someone before 1790 for by that time he had a small family.
For the 1790 census there were two Henry Millers in Rowan. One of them was in the same community with known members of the John Miller family, so that is probably this Henry Miller (1751), but might be the brother-in-law instead.

Henry was listed on the 1800 census in Rowan County. The list was alphabetical within communities and he was listed in a group of other Millers including his widowed mother and a couple of brothers. Another Henry Miller was listed but many pages away.

Henry was no longer in Rowan for the 1810 census so he must have died or moved away by then. There were two "H. Miller" listings in Ashe County, North Carolina in 1810. One of them could be this Henry, for some of his siblings did move to that county, so perhaps he did as well. It is interesting to note that both "H. Miller" listings in Ashe County had identical enumerations. Perhaps it was only one person but listed twice. At present I have no way to know if this is the same Henry from Rowan County, but his enumerations in 1810 do track well with the 1800 enumerations. Making a huge assumption that this is the same person, I'll follow the line in Ashe County:
1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)
1810 Ashe Co, NC pg 66 H. Miller 11101-00101-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 45 and up (bef 1765) Henry MILLER 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) Son? 1 Male(s) 10-15 (1794-1800) Son? 1 Male(s) 0-9 (1800-1810) Son? 1 Female(s) 45 & up (before 1765) Wife? 1 Female(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) Daughter?
A Henry Miller and a Henry Miller Jr were listed on the 1815 Ashe County tax list. Henry (1751) is probably the "Henry Miller" and not the "Jr" for the 1820 census shows a much younger Henry in Ashe County, and that is probably the one listed as "Jr" in 1815.
The 1820 census shows only one Henry Miller in Ashe and he is far too young to be Henry (1751). This means that Henry either died or moved away.
Michael Miller was born 31 Oct 1753 (source?) either in Pennsylvania or possibly on the New River in Virginia. He is a proven son of John Miller by the 1773 tax list and by John's 1780 Will which names Michael as his son.
Michael Miler was listed on the 1773 Rowan County tax list with his father John Miller.
Michael married Nancy --- before ca 1790. I have "Tansey" as her maiden name but I haven't yet found a source for that, so I'm not sure if it is accurate or not.
There are two Michael Millers on the 1790 census in Rowan County. One of them was in the same community with known members of the John Miller family, so that is probably this Michael Miller (1753).
1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

Michael was listed on the 1800 census in Rowan County. The list was alphabetical within communities and he was listed in a group of other Millers including his widowed mother and a couple of brothers. He was the only Michael Miller listed this time.

I did not find Michael Miller on the 1810 census in Rowan County. There was a man by that name listed but he was much too young to be the same one. It is possible that it is him but with the enumeration being off so much I have to wonder. However I'll give it anyway just in case. He was listed next to a John Miller (1784/94), perhaps a son:
1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)
1810 Rowan Co, NC pg 274 Michael Miller 01110-10310-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1765-1784) Michael MILLER (1753) s/o John & Maria 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) Son? I don't know the source, but I have "1813" as Michael's date of death. Perhaps there is an estate record or something in Rowan County to support this. I've not seen it yet.
A widow Nancy Miller is listed on the 1820 census in Rowan County. This is probably Michael's widow, though it is possible it was someone else of the same name. She was not listed near any other Millers.
1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

(1784/94) 2 Female(s) 16-25 (1794-1804) Daughter? (1784/94?) Daughter? (1800/04)
Nancy was not listed on the 1830 census in Rowan County, North Carolina. She may have died, moved away, or still been there but living with a child and therefore not listed by name.
Sarah Miller was born 18 Oct 1755 (source?) either in Pennsylvania or possibly on the New River in Virginia. She was named in the Moravian records as being John's daughter.
Sarah married "Heinrich Muller" (Henry Miller) on 21 Mar 1775 in Rowan County. This marriage is recorded in the Moravian records. It referred to Henry as being a single man who recently came from Pennsylvania. No indication is given as to whether this Henry Miller was related to the John Miller family already. Henry was born before 1755 (per 1800 census), presumably in Pennsylvania. I don't know who his parents were. Like I said before there is no evidence that he and Sarah were cousins, though they certainly could have been, but Muller/Miller was a very common name in Pennsylvania and North Carolina.
The Moravian records show that Sarah Miller Miller died on 4 Feb 1778 and was buried the next day on the John Miller farm.
I don't know if Sarah and Henry had any children, but her father John Miller made his Will in 1780 and named a grandson "John Henry Miller" and I have to wonder if that was his daughter Sarah's child. I'm assuming it was, but I could be wrong about that.
After Sarah's death, Henry Miller married her sister Susannah Miller.
Maria Miller was born 20 Oct 1757 (source?) either in Pennsylvania or possibly on the New River in Virginia. She is a proven child of John based on the Moravian records.
Maria died on 11 Dec 1777 in Rowan County and was buried on her father's farm.
Susanna Miller was born 21 Oct 1761 (source?) in Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina. I don't know what the proof is connecting her to this family, but I assume it is in the Moravian records.
Susanna apparently married Henry Miller on 16 Sep 1779 (source?) after the death of his first wife Sarah Miller, Susanna's sister, in 1778.
The 1790 census shows two entries for Henry Miller in Rowan County. One was this one, the other his brother-in-law Henry Miller (1751). I'm not sure I have them sorted out correctly, but I think I do.
1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

There were two Henrys in 1800 Rowan County also. I believe I have identified them correctly. This Henry was not listed near any other Millers. There are a couple of problems with this entry though. One, the wife is too old to be Susanna. Two, there are 3 "extra" children that did not appear to be listed back in 1790 though they should have been considering their ages. I still believe this is the right family, but thought I should point out the discrepancies.

Henry Miller was not listed on the 1810 census in Rowan County, but a widow Susanna Miller was listed. Assuming this is the same Susannah, that means that Henry Miller died between 1800 and 1810.

I did not find Susanna on the 1820 census in Rowan, unless she is the one listed as "Widow Miller", and that could be her but it is impossible to say for sure, but I don't think it is her, mainly because the enumerations are not a great match with her 1800 entry. She was probably at home with one of her children for this census.
Susanna Miller Miller died on 12 Dec 1822 (source?) in Rowan (now Davidson) County, NC.
John Miller was born 9 Mar 1763 (per Revolutionary War Pension record) in Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina. I don't know what the proof is connecting him to this family, but I assume it is in the Moravian records. His Revolutionary War Pension makes it clear that this is the same John Miller because he was born on Muddy Creek and his father died in 1780 (that is the year John Miller Sr died).
John Miller enlisted at age 15 (about 1779) for the Revolutionary War and according to his pension he served or marched several places during the War, including Charlotte, and into South Carolina near Savannah River. After this he went home. He was drafted in 1780 and went to Charlotte and then to Charleston. He said his father died while he was in Charleston in 1780 (John Sr died 14 Feb 1780). A fairly complete record of his service was given in that record.
John Miller married someone before 1790. I don't have a record of his wife's name.
There were three John Millers listed on the 1790 census in Rowan County. One of them was in the same grouping with other members of the John Miller Sr family, so that is probably this John.

There were six men named "John Miller" listed on the 1800 census in Rowan County. One of them was near widow Mary Faber Miller, so I assume that is this John.

There were seven men named "John Miller" listed on the 1810 census in Rowan County. None of them are a clear match for this John. We know that this John Miller moved to Ashe County, NC at some point (per his Revolutionary War Pension), so he could be one of the several "J. Miller" listings there in 1810. In Rowan County, there are two possible matches. The other five are all too young. I'll list them below for comparison.
1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

I can't say which (if either) of the above is this John Miller. He may have already moved to Ashe County by 1810. Unfortunately the census taker there that year listed everyone only by initial, so I can't tell which of the "J. Miller" listings are for Johns, which are James, Joseph, etc. However, there were only 4 of them, and 3 of them were too young. The one that was old enough had a small family though, so it may not be the same John from Rowan. Here is the listing anyway.

If I had to guess I'd say John Miller was still in Rowan in 1810 and was the one listed on page 282 of that census, but it could be the one on page 242 just as easily.
The 1815 Ashe County tax lists shows one John Miller. I don't know if it his him or someone else though. I suspect it was someone else.
The 1820 census only shows one John Miller in Ashe, and he is too young to be this John (1763). In Rowan there were several Johns, but one was in the right neighborhood to be this John, so I think that is him.

John Miller moved to Ashe County before 1830 for he was listed there on that census. He was living by himself so his wife must have died before then and his children were all gone from home. Ashe County was full of Millers but he was not listed near any of them, though Isaac (1780/90) and Henry Miller (1780/90) were not too far away on the previous page.

John applied for a Revolutionary War Pension on 12 Nov 1832 in Ashe County, North Carolina.
John Miller was listed on the 1835 Revolutionary War Pensioners Census in Ashe County as "John Miller", aged 72 (born ca 1762/63), served in Virginia Militia.
I don't know where this came from, but I have 16 Mar 1835 as John's date of death. This could be accurate, but his inclusion on the 1835 census makes me wonder about it.
I did not find John Miller on the 1840 census, so the 1835 death date may be accurate.
Valentine "Felty" Miller was born 18 Sep 1766 (source?) in Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina. I don't know what the proof is connecting him to the John Miller family, but I assume it is in the Moravian records.
"Felty" is a common nickname for "Valentine", though I don't know why!
Valentine Miller married someone before 1790. I don't know her name. I've seen the name "Eva Fischel" as his first wife, but I don't know the source for that.
He was listed on the 1790 census in Rowan County in the same grouping with his mother and some siblings. I have some reservations about this actually being the same person. My reason for doubt is that by 1800 Valentine's family was much smaller and younger. It is possible that all his children died in between 1790 and 1800. Another explanation is that the folks living with him in 1790 were not his wife and children but other people instead.

In 1800 Valentine was listed in Rowan County with a much smaller and younger family than in 1790. However, this could be an erroneous record because his own age appears to be too young in this census. One explanation is that he was not home when the census taker came around and a neighbor gave the information and it was off somewhat. He was listed in the same grouping with some of his siblings and his mother, but the listing was alphabetical (within communities, not the entire county).

Valentine was still in Rowan for the 1810 census. He was not listed near any other Millers this time.

1810 Rowan Co, NC pg 270 Valentine Miller 11010-21010-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1765-1784) Valentine MILLER (1763) s/o John & Maria 1 Male(s) 10-15 (1794-1800) Son? Valentine's first wife died before 1814, for on 20 Feb 1814 he married Eva Crisson in Rowan County. This is recorded in the Moravian records which also noted she was not Moravian. She died just 2 months later on 14 Apr 1814.
I once thought that Valentine may have gone with some of his siblings to Ashe County, or at least speculated in land there, for the 1815 Tax List for Ashe shows both a Valentine Miller Sr and a Valentine Miller Jr owning land. On the other hand this may be two different people. The 1810 Ashe County census shows no one named "Valentine" or "Felty" Miller, but the 1820 census shows two of them, both much younger than Valentine of Rowan. They could be the "Sr" and "Jr" from the 1815 tax list. They could certainly both be nephews of the elder Valentine or one could even be a son. All speculative of course.
Valentine Miller was still in Rowan County for the 1820 census, listed near his brother John Miller (1763). Valentine appears to have not remarried unless the female aged 16-25 is his new wife.

In 1822, Davidson County was formed from a portion of Rowan County which included the Friedberg and Muddy Creek region where the Millers lived.
Valentine Miller was listed on the 1830 census in Davidson County.

Valentine Miller died on 22 Aug 1835 in Davidson County, NC. His death is mentioned in the Moravian records, that he was found drowned in a creek.
According to the census records, Valentine appears to have had numerous children. So far I only know of one by name: Christian Miller, who was mentioned in the Moravian records as having discovered his father's body in 1835.
Katherine Miller was born 27 Dec 1768 (source?) in Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina. I don't know what the proof is connecting her to the John Miller family, but I assume it is in the Moravian records. Katherine died in 1781 and is buried at the Friedberg Cemetery in Davidson County.
Christina Miller was born 17 Mar 1771 (source?) in Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina. I don't know what the proof is connecting her to the John Miller family, but I assume it is in the Moravian records.
I've been told that Christina Miller married Isaac Taylor in 1786 and that they moved to Ashe Co, NC. I don't know what the source for this is so I have not followed up on it yet.
Joseph Miller was born 1 Mar 1773 (source?) in Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina. I don't know what the proof is connecting him to the John Miller family, but I assume it is in the Moravian records.
Joseph may have been home with his widowed mother for the 1790 census, for she did have two boys with her aged 16 and up (born before 1774). One of those could be Joseph.
Joseph was not with his mother in 1800 so he must have married, died or moved away by then. There was no listing for Joseph Miller in Rowan County in 1800. There was one in Ashe County (where some of his siblings later moved) but he appears to be much too old to be this same Joseph (1773).
Looking at the 1810 census I see no Joseph Miller in Rowan County. He could have been in Ashe County but unfortunately the census taker that year only listed people by their first initial. There are 4 "J. Miller" listings, and no way to know if any of them was a "Joseph" Miller. Only two of them fit age-wise anyway, but there is no way to know if it is a match or not.
The 1820 census shows no Joseph in either Ashe or Rowan County.
From this lack of evidence I can only conclude that Joseph Miller died shortly after 1790 or moved out of the area, probably out of state.
Jacob Miller was born 24 Aug 1775 (source?) in Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina. I don't know what the proof is connecting him to the John Miller family, but I assume it is in the Moravian records. He died on 8 Oct 1775 (source?) and is buried at Friedberg Cemetery.
David Miller was born 28 Dec 1776 (source?) in Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina. I don't know what the proof is connecting him to the John Miller family, but I assume it is in the Moravian records. David was a twin to Jonathan Miller.
David Miller died on 29 May 1777 and is buried at Friedberg Cemetery.
Jonathan Miller was born 28 Dec 1776 (per tombstone) in Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina. I don't know what the proof is connecting him to the John Miller family, but I assume it is in the Moravian records. Jonathan was a twin to David Miller.
Jonathan Miller is my ancestor. He moved to Ashe County, NC around 1800 and married Margaret Carpenter there. See their own page for additional information.
