I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grandson of Jonathan Miller and Margaret Carpenter.
Jonathan Miller was born 28 Dec 1776 (per his tombstone) in Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina. Jonathan had a twin brother David Miller who died young.
Jonathan's parents were John Miller and Maria Faber as proven by Moravian records as well as by John Miller's Estate records. (Much data about the Millers is given in the book "The Millers of Ashe County, NC" by Danny L. Miller.)
Jonathan was raised in that section of Rowan County that became Davidson County in the 1820's. He left there long before that happened though.
He was probably home with his widowed mother for the 1790 census for she did have one apparent son "under 16" (born 1774/90) living with her that year.
Jonathan was not home with his mother for the 1800 census for she was living alone at that time. He was about 23 years old, but he was not listed on the census as a head of household. He was probably residing with one of his siblings or some other family in 1800.
Jonathan had moved west a few miles into Ashe County by 1801, for on 6 Jun 1801 he entered 50 acres of land on the south side of the North Fork of New River. (Entry # 402).
It was around this same time (ca 1801) that Jonathan Miller married Margaret Carpenter in Ashe County. No marriage record was found, but their marriage is proven by several sources including the estate records of her parents. Margaret Carpenter was born 27 Oct 1784 (per tombstone) in Surry (now Yadkin) County, North Carolina. She is a child of Mathias Carpenter and Elizabeth Miller. It is possible that Margaret was related to Jonathan since her own mother was a Miller, but no connection is known. Her grandparents were Christian and Veronica Miller of Surry (now Yadkin) County. Jonathan's parents were of the Moravian faith, as was Margaret's grandparents, so there could be some sort of connection between them.
On 5 May 1802 Jonathan Miller witnessed a deed from Elisha Collins to Mathias Carpenter (his father-in-law). (Ashe County, NC Deed Book A page 434).
I have not done an exhaustive search for records in Ashe County for Jonathan Miller, but I'm sure there are plenty of deeds, court records, etc., that would be of interest. I'll gather them as time permits.
On 15 Jan 1810 Jonathan Miller entered 100 acres (Entry # 2228) adjoining his own land.
Jonathan Miller was probably listed on the 1810 census in Ashe County. I say "probably" because the census taker decided to only list folks by their initials. There were 4 men listed as "J. Miller" one of which must be Jonathan. Only one of them fits, so I'm sure that one is Jonathan. He was listed next to two of the other "J. Miller" listings, so perhaps one of them is his brother Joseph Miller. I don't know who the 3rd one might be. Father-in-law Mathias Carpenter was listed nearby as well.

Jonathan Miller was listed on the 1815 Ashe County tax list. He had 175 acres on North Fork (of New River) valued at $260 in 3 tracts.
Although he was certainly still residing in Ashe County at the time, Jonathan does not appear to be listed on the 1820 census there.
On 19 Mar 1821, Jonathan Miller entered 50 acres (Entry # 3574) on North Side of Three Top Mountain.
Jonathan Miller was listed on the 1830 census in Ashe County. He did not appear to be listed near any known relatives.

Margaret's parents Mathias and Elizabeth (Miller) Carpenter both died in 1835 and the estate was divided among the heirs in a series of deeds dated 21 Oct 1835. Jonathan and Margaret Miller were named in those deeds. (Ashe County, NC Deed Book G page 165).
Jonathan Miller was listed on the 1840 census in Ashe County.

Jonathan Miller was listed on the 1850 census in Ashe County. He was next door to son David Miller. A young Elizabeth Miller was living with them, probably a granddaughter.

Jonathan Miller made his Will in 1851 naming his wife and children. I transcribed this Will from a copy sent to me from the North Carolina Archives:

The Will was proven in Court November 1854, so he had died by then. His tombstone shows that he died on 12 Jul 1854. He is buried at the Welch Cemetery behind his old home place. I visited the grave on September 29, 1995 and it was still legible, although the stone was very badly covered in moss, most of which appeared fossilized. The engraving was slanted and had obviously been hand carved. In a few more years it will probably be illegible (if not already).
Margaret and some of her children were listed on the 1860 census in Ashe County. They were still next door to son David Miller, and next to a Henry Miller, relationship unknown.

Margaret Carpenter Miller died on 17 Jun 1865 (per tombstone) and is buried beside Jonathan at Welch's Cemetery.
Jonathan Miller and Margaret Carpenter had 11 children as proven by his Will and some by other records as well.
Mary Miller was born ca 1803/04 (per 1850 and 1870 census), in Ashe County, North Carolina. She is a proven child of Jonathan Miller as named in his 1851 Will.
I would guess that Mary Miller was named for her grandmother Maria Faber Miller as well as her Aunt Mary Carpenter.
Mary was apparently home with her parents for the 1810 census, aged "under 10" (born ca 1800/10).
She was probably still home in 1820, but her parents were not found that year.
She still seems to be home with her parents in 1830, aged 20-29 (born ca 1800/10).
Sometime prior to ca 1839, Mary Miller married William Weaver in Ashe County. No marriage record was found, but the marriage is proven by Jonathan Miller's Will. William was born ca 1801/02 (per 1850 census) in Ashe County. I don't know who his parents were. There were several Weaver in Ashe County with sons in his age group. Any of them could be his parents.
William Weaver was listed on the 1840 census in Ashe County. They did not seem to be listed near any close relatives.

William Weaver apparently died in the 1860's for Mary was listed as a widow in 1870.
Mary was listed with her daughter Elizabeth in 1870 in Ashe County.

Mary appears to have died before 1880, for I was unable to locate her on the 1880 census. It is possible that she moved away instead, but I don't know.
Christina Miller was born ca 1804/05 (per 1850 census), in Ashe County, North Carolina. She is a proven child of Jonathan Miller as named in his 1851 Will. She was probably named for her Aunt Christina Carpenter (c1800).
Christina was apparently home with her parents for the 1810 census, aged "under 10" (born ca 1800/10).
She was probably still home in 1820, but her parents were not found that year.
In 1830, her parents only had one daughter with them aged 20-29 (born ca 1800/10), and I believe that is daughter Mary instead of Christine or any of the others.
Sometime before 1830, Christine Miller married Joshua Weaver in Ashe County. No marriage record was found, but the marriage is proven by Jonathan Miller's Will.
There were two older men named Joshua Weaver in the area, one born ca 1777 in VA. In 1850 his wife was named Susannah, born ca 1776. The other Joshua Weaver was born ca 1784/85 in NC, and in 1850 his wife was named Martha, born ca 1800. I believe that Christine's husband was born ca 1800/10 based on their 1830 census entry. I don't know who this Joshua's parents were, but it looks like William Weaver (c1784) and Farraby --- (c1784) may be his parents.
In 1820 Ashe County there were only two Joshua's listed and they are apparently the same two mentioned above (one born 1777, one born 1785). That means that Joshua (1800/10) and Christine had probably not married yet by then.
In 1830 Ashe County, there were three Joshua Weavers listed. The two older men, plus this one, listed as Joshua "Jur" (Junior). He was just a few houses from David Carpenter, his wife's Uncle.

For the 1840 census, only the two older Joshua Weavers remained in Ashe County. Apparently Joshua and Christina had moved away. Several of her siblings moved to Indiana, so perhaps they did as well. Sure enough, there is a Joshua Weaver listed in Monroe County, Indiana on the 1840 census. The enumerations are a good match with 1830 Joshua, so I think it may be the same family. This is the same county that Christina's uncle David Carpenter moved to at the same time.

Joshua Weaver apparently died sometime before 1850 for he was not listed on the 1850 census, but his wife and children were listed in Monroe County Indiana that year with William Weaver (1784) and Farraby (1784). I can only assume these were Joshua's parents.

Elizabeth Miller was born ca 1805/06 (per 1850 census), in Ashe County, North Carolina. She is a proven child of Jonathan Miller as named in his 1851 Will. She was probably named for grandmother Elizabeth Miller Carpenter.
Elizabeth was apparently home with her parents for the 1810 census, aged "under 10" (born ca 1800/10).
She was probably still home in 1820, but her parents were not found that year.

I was unable to find John or Elizabeth on the 1870 census in Ashe County. They either died in the 1860's or moved away.
Susanna Miller was born 21 May 1808 (per Family Bible), in Ashe County, North Carolina. She is a proven child of Jonathan Miller as named in his 1851 Will. She was probably named for her aunt Susanna Miller (1761).
Susanna was apparently home with her parents for the 1810 census, aged "under 10" (born ca 1800/10).
She was probably still home in 1820, but her parents were not found that year.
On 4 Jul 1825 (per Family Bible) Susanna Miller married Jacob Davis in Ashe County. Family Tradition says they married on the Court House steps. No public marriage record was found, but the marriage is proven by Jonathan Miller's Will as well as other sources. Jacob Davis was Susanna's 1st cousin, a son of William Davis and Frances Carpenter.
Jacob and Susanna remained in Ashe County for a few years, but they may have moved back and forth between her home and his in Burke (now Avery) County, for their children were born in both places. From that I can say they were in Ashe County in 1827, Burke in 1828, still in Burke for the 1830 census, but back in Ashe later that same year. They were still in Ashe County through 1837, but by 1839 had moved to Blount County, Tennessee. They remained there until about 1847 when they moved to Cherokee (now Graham) County, North Carolina where they remained.
These are my ancestors. See their own page for additional information.
David Miller was born ca 1809/10 (per 1850 and 1860 census), in Ashe County, North Carolina. He is a proven child of Jonathan Miller as named in his 1851 Will. He was probably named both for his Uncle David Miller (his father's twin brother who died young) and for his Uncle David Carpenter.
David was apparently home with his parents for the 1810 census, aged "under 10" (born ca 1800/10).
He was probably still home in 1820, but his parents were not found that year.
He was apparently still with his parents for the 1830 census, aged 20-29 (born ca 1800/10).
David did not seem to be home with his parents in 1840 for they had no apparent sons his age home that year. There were three men named David Miller listed on the 1840 Ashe County census. Two of them appear to be too old to be this same David. One, David Miller, Esquire, was born ca 1770/80, the next one, David Miller was born ca 1790/1800, and the last one was David H. Miller who was born ca 1800/10 according to this census, but I don't know if David H. Miller is the same as our David Miller, but her certainly could be.
David Miller went into neighboring Wilkes County and obtained a marriage bond there on 12 Mar 1842 to marry Mary "Polly" Eller. Eli McNeil was bondsman. Mary was born 17 Jan 1823 (per tombstone) either in Ashe or Wilkes County, NC. I don't know who her parents were. They apparently returned to Ashe County after their marriage.
David and family were listed on the 1850 census in Ashe County next door to his parents.

David Miller apparently died in the 1860's, perhaps due to the Civil War (1861-1865), though he was too old to have been a regular soldier. Many people died in that period for war related reasons. He may be buried at the Welch Cemetery but I did not see a grave for him there.
Mary and children were listed on the 1870 census in Ashe County in Staggs Creek Township.

** I have not yet looked for Mary on the 1900 census, but she was undoubtedly still in Ashe County that year.
Mary Eller Miller died on 3 Jun 1907 (per tombstone) and is buried at the Welch Cemetery in Ashe County. I've seen her grave.
Sarah Miller was born ca 1811/12 (per 1850 census), in Ashe County, North Carolina. She is a proven child of Jonathan Miller as named in his 1851 Will. She was probably named for her aunt Sarah Miller.
She was probably home with her parents in 1820, but they were not found that year.
She was apparently still with her parents for the 1830 census, aged 15-19 (born ca 1810/15).
Sarah Miller married John Miller sometime between 1830 and ca 1834 in Ashe County. No marriage record was found, but the marriage is proven by Jonathan Miller's Will. John was born ca 1809/10, presumably in Ashe County. I don't know who his parents were, but he could be related to Sarah.
They apparently moved to Greene County, Indiana between ca 1836 and 1839 (based on children's birth places as listed on the 1850 census). The only way I've identified this John Miller (in Greene Co, IN) as being the same one is that he was next door to David Weaver who married Sarah Miller's sister.
They were listed on the 1840 census in Greene County next door to brother-in-law David Weaver and a few houses from a John Miller Sr, perhaps John Jr's father?

I was unable to find them in Greene County in 1860. They must have moved away somewhere. I found a couple of kids living with other families who were of the same names and approximate ages of some of John and Sarah's kids, but I'm not sure if it was them. If it was, then perhaps both John and Sarah died in the 1850's. I also looked in Monroe County where other members of this family lived, but I didn't find them there either. "John Miller" is much to common a name to just start looking at all of them listed in the 1860 census indexes and hope to find this one.
Frances Miller was born ca 1813/14 (per 1850 census), in Ashe County, North Carolina. She is a proven child of Jonathan Miller as named in his 1851 Will. She was probably named for her aunt Frances Carpenter.
She was probably home with her parents in 1820, but they were not found that year.
She was apparently still with her parents for the 1830 census, aged 10-14 (born ca 1815/20).
Frances Miller married David Weaver sometime between 1830 and ca 1834 in Ashe County. No marriage record was found, but the marriage is proven by Jonathan Miller's Will. David was born ca 1812/13, presumably in Ashe County. I don't know who his parents were.

Mathias Miller was born 22 Oct 1817 (per tombstone), in Ashe County, North Carolina. He is a proven child of Jonathan Miller as named in his 1851 Will. He was probably named for his grandfather Mathias Carpenter.
He was probably home with his parents in 1820, but they were not found that year.
Mathias was apparently still with her parents for the 1830 census, aged 10-14 (born ca 1815/20).
Mathias still seems to be home with his parents in 1840, aged 20-29 (born ca 1810/20).
Mathias Miller married Jane --- sometime between 1840 and ca 1848 in Ashe County. I've seen her maiden name listed as "Weaver" which may be correct, but I've seen no proof so far. She was born ca 1815/16 (per 1850 census), presumably in Ashe County. I've seen her tombstone, but it was broken and unreadable, so I was unable to get her birth or death date from it.
They were listed on the 1850 census in Ashe County next to William Miller (c1811), relationship unknown, possibly a cousin and a few houses from John Miller (c1784) and wife Nancy, relationship unknown.

I was unable to locate Mathias Miller on the 1860 census in Ashe County. He may have moved away temporarily for he was back after that. It is also possible he was just missed by the census taker. There were numerous men of that name listed in other states in 1860. I did not pursue any of them to see if any were this same Mathias.
Mathias and family were "back" in Ashe for the 1870 census, and listed in Staggs Creek Township. They were listed next door to John Miller (c1784) and Nancy, who were also nearby back in 1850.

Mathias Miller died on 23 Feb 1896 in Ashe County and is buried at the Welch Cemetery. I've been to his grave. Jane is also buried there but her stone is damaged and her date of death can not be read, so I don't know when she died. I did not find her on the 1900 census but I did not do a real thorough search.
Nancy Miller was born 5 Jul 1819 (source?), in Ashe County, North Carolina. She is a proven child of Jonathan Miller as named in his 1851 Will. I don't know who she may have been named for, if anyone in particular.
She was probably home with her parents in 1820, but they were not found that year.
Nancy was apparently with her parents for the 1830 census, aged 10-14 (born ca 1815/20).

Nancy was home with her parents in 1850 ("Nancy" age 30, born NC).
Nancy was home with her widowed mother in 1860 ("Nancy" age 40, born NC).
Nancy and her sister Margaret were living together and listed on the 1870 census in Ashe County near many relatives.

I found a Nancy Miller in 1880 in Ashe County but I'm not sure if it is the same Nancy or not. She was listed as "Nancy Miller", age 58 (born ca 1822, which is close, but off a little), single, and living with Floid Welch (c1846 VA) and wife Elizabeth Welch (c1842 NC) and listed as their "Aunt." None of our Nancy's siblings had a daughter named Elizabeth born ca 1842 whom this could be, so I am a little concerned that this not our Nancy. This may be the same Elizabeth Miller (c1840) who was with them in 1850 and 1860. If so, then she must belong to one of Nancy's brothers or sisters.
In 1880, Eli Miller (c1809) was listed next door to them, relationship to our Millers unknown. This was Staggs Creek Township so the locale is correct. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Nancy Miller died on 28 Feb 1893 (source?) in Ashe County, NC. I don't know where she is buried. I didn't see her at Welch's Cemetery, but I could have missed her.
Margaret Miller was born ca 1826/27 (per 1850 census), in Ashe County, North Carolina. She is a proven child of Jonathan Miller as named in his 1851 Will. She was probably named for her mother.
Margaret was apparently with her parents for the 1830 census, aged "under 5" (born ca 1825/30).
She still seems to be home with her parents in 1840, aged 10-14 (born ca 1825/30).
Margaret was home with her parents in 1850 ("Margaret" age 23, born NC).

I read somewhere, or was told, that Margaret married someone named Daniel Bowman. Since she was still single up through 1870 and not found in 1880, I've assumed this marriage must have taken place in the 1870's. I found a Daniel B. Bowman in neighboring Washington County, Tennessee in 1880 with a wife Margaret who is a perfect match for Margaret Miller. She was his second wife and he had a large family already from his previous marriage. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Jonathan Miller was born 11 Dec 1829 (source?), in Ashe County, North Carolina. He is a proven child of Jonathan Miller as named in his 1851 Will. He was probably named for his father.
Jonathan was apparently with his parents for the 1830 census, aged "under 5" (born ca 1825/30).
He still seems to be home with his parents in 1840, aged 5-9 (born ca 1830/35).
Jonathan was home with his parents in 1850 ("Jonathan" age 20, born NC). He is listed too old here for some reason.
He was home with his widowed mother in 1860 ("Jonathan" age 20, born NC).
I've been told that he died in the Civil War at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on 3 Jul 1863. I have not attempted to find his Civil War records yet.
