Moore Genealogy - Western NC and Upper West SC
Welcome to my Moore genealogy pages. I am interested in the Moore surname in several western North Carolina counties and some upper west South Carolina counties.
Moore was the 16th most common surname in the United States in 2000. By 2010 it had dropped to the 18th most common.
I have two different Moore lines that I don’t believe are connected with each another.
Line I - VA, SC, NC, TN, GA - Burt Moore (1756-1836).
Line II - Buncombe Co., NC - Cpt. William Moore (1726-1812)
Line I - My four times great grandmother, Jane Moore, was born ca 1815 in TN. Her parents were from Pendleton Dist., SC where they returned shortly after her birth. They remained there until the mid 1820s when they moved to what is now Macon Co., NC where Jane married Samuel Patterson in 1830. Jane and husband moved to Union Co., GA in the 1830s. Her parents:
Joseph Moore was born ca 1787 in Pendleton Dist., SC (now Pickens Co., SC). He married Rebecca (maiden name unknown) in that county before 1810. They made a brief move to somewhere in Tennessee during the early to mid 1810s but were back in SC by ca 1818. They moved to what is now Macon Co., NC in the 1820s and remained there perhaps a decade before moving to Union Co., GA. They remained there until the 1850s when they moved to Polk Co., TN where they were last found on the 1860 census. Joseph’s parents:
Burt Moore was born ca 1756 in Halifax Co., VA. He came to the Pacolet River area of SC with his parents while young and served during the American Revolution from there. He moved a little further west into what is now Pickens Co., SC sometime after that. His first wife was a Miss Bruce, given name unknown. She died in the 1790s and he remarried. Burt died in Pickens District in 1836. His second wife, Mary, remained in Pickens until the 1840s when she went to north Georgia with her youngest son, Hugh Moore. She died in Gilmer Co., GA in 1866.
Burt’s parents are unknown.
Line II - My five times great grandmother, Elizabeth Moore, was born ca 1788/89 in Burke Co., NC, in the part that became Buncombe County shortly afterward. She married Benjamin Tutt ca 1810. They remained in Buncombe until his death in the 1820s and hers in May, 1860. Her parents:
Cpt. William Moore was born ca 1726 in Ulster, Ireland. He came to America, presumably with his parents, and settled in western North Carolina where he married, 1st, Ann Cathey, and with her had at least six children. After her death, ca early 1770s, he married, 2nd, Margaret Patton in 1774 in Rowan Co., NC. Together, they had five children including my Elizabeth Moore Tutt. I should note that I’m also a Cathey descendant, though not via Ann above. William died in 1812, and Margaret in 1814.
William’s parents are unknown, but he does have a known brother, Charles Moore (c1727-1804), of Spartanburg Dist., SC.
