Special thanks to Ruth Hader, Marcus Thomas, Gerre Byrd and others for
data shared on this family. Much family data is found in Revolutionary War Pension file (W2155) for Burton Moore. I've had portions of this data for years, but thanks to Ruth Hader for sharing verbatim transcripts of many of the pertinent records. Burt Moore was born ca 1755/56. This is based on his age as given on 12 March 1833 as "about seventy seven years". It is possible that this is incorrect, because his many census entries can not be reconciled with each other, though it is hard to say which was in error. For example, in 1790 he is age 16+ (born before 1774). In 1800 he is age 16-25 (born 1774/84!), in 1810 he is 45+ (born before 1765), in 1820 he is 45+ (born before 1775), and in 1830 he is 60-69 (born before 1760/70). These five census records can not be reconciled with one another. If we throw out the 1800 entry as erroneous (which it surely is), then we can reconcile the rest to show that Burt was born ca 1760/65. This is close to his ca 1755/56 birth year derived from his Pension record. Burt was born in Halifax County, Virginia (per Pension record). I don’t know who Burt Moore’s parents were. There were several Moores in Halifax County, Virginia at the time he was born. Other Moore researchers have speculated that Burt was a son of a Joseph and Ruth (---) Moore who was there. There is some circumstantial evidence supporting this, but nothing definitive as far as I know. Burt Moore moved to Spartanburg District, SC when he was "eight or ten years old", so ca 1766 or thereabouts. . In his Pension records it is stated that Burt volunteered while residing on Pacolet River as a spy against the Indians. He served under Captain James Hamilton and Colonel James Woods. He later served under Captain Major Pason and Colonel Roebuck. He joined Colonels Sevier and Shelby and was at the Battle of Kings Mountain. He later rejoined Captain Parson and then later joined Captain Samuel Earle’s unit. He was apparently in several skirmishes with the Tories, and at some point served under Captain Edward Hampton. All these facts are recorded in Mary Glenn Moore’s Widow’s Pension Application (W2155) filed for her claim on Burt Moore’s service. I don’t know when exactly, but sometime prior to ca 1777, Burt Moore married a Miss Bruce, presumably in the Pacolet River area. No one has yet discovered her given name, but she was a daughter of James and Mary (—) Bruce. At some point after the war, Burt and family moved westward into Pendleton County (part of Ninety-Six District), South Carolina, probably around 1783 as he said in his Pension record. Pendleton was not created until 1789, and before that it was still Indian Territory, so it is possible that the Moores did not move there until 1789. They were certainly there by 1790 for they were listed there on the 1790 census. I don't know what part of Pendleton they lived in. The Bruce family lived on or near Wolf Creek and Twelve Mile Creek, so perhaps the Moores lived in that area as well. This is around the present town of Pickens in Pickens County. In 1790, Burt Moore (and numerous other Moores) were listed in Ninety-Six District, Pendleton County, South Carolina. They were listed between Charles Sincler (Sinclair?) and James Gilaspey (Gillespie). A William Moore was just seven households away. He could be a brother or other close relation. 1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1790 Pendleton Co, SC Ninety-Six District pg 84 Burt Moore 1-3-3-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16 and Up (before 1774) Burt MOORE (1756) 3 Male(s) under 16 (1774/1790) Joseph MOORE (1786/87) son Son? (1784/90) In 1791, Pendleton County was detached from Ninety-Six District, and made part of the new Washington District. Mrs. (—) Bruce Moore died sometime prior to 1797, for on 1 Feb 1797, Burt married Mary Glenn in Pendleton County (as stated in the Revolutionary War Pension file). Mary was born 13 Nov 1780 (per pension record). Her father was William Glenn. In 1798 (effective 1800), Washington District was abolished, and Pendleton County became Pendleton District. Burt Moore was listed on the 1800 census in Pendleton District. For some reason he himself was not enumerated with his family, or else he was included in a younger age group. Mary Murphree and William Riggins were his neighbors on either side. No other Moores were listed nearby. There was an older woman (born before 1755) living with him that year. That could be his mother or perhaps Mary Glenn’s mother, or some other relative. (She still seemed to be with Burt in 1810 also). 1800 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1800 Pendleton Dist, SC pg 113 Burt Moore 13100-22111-0-3 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1774-1784) Burt MOORE (1756) s/o ? 3 Male(s) 10-15 (1784-1790) Joseph MOORE (1786/87) son –> head 1810 Son? Lewis Eaton and John Fields were their next door neighbors. No other Moores were listed nearby. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Pickens Dist, SC pg 309 Birt Moore 0100000010000-0000001000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 60-69 (1760-1770) Burt MOORE (1755/56) 1 Male(s) 5-9 (1820-1825) Hugh MOORE (1822) son 1 Female(s) 40-49 (1780-1790) Mary GLENN Moore (1780) wife Burt Moore made his Will in Pickens County and left all his land to youngest son Hughey, and 20 acres to wife Mary Moore, then at her death that also went to Hughey. He stated that all his other possessions be sold and divided among his other heirs who he did not list by name. He mentioned some other property that Dave Moore currently lived on, and listed several who owed him money including: John Moore, James Bruce, William Moore, James Moore, Moses Anderson, Presley T. Moore, Joseph Moore and Daniel Moore, all sons or sons-in-law (though he didn't state the relationship). (Pickens Co, SC Will Book 1 page 64). Burt Moore died on 23 Apr 1836 (per pension file) in Pickens District, South Carolina. Mary Glenn Moore was not listed on the 1840 census, but I’m fairly sure she was living with her son Hugh Moore that year in Pickens District, SC. She was with him in 1850 for sure, and in 1840 he had someone her age in his household. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Pickens Dist, SC pg 366 Hugh Moore 0001000000000-0100000100000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 15-19 (1820-1825) Hugh MOORE (1822) s/o Burt and Mary 1 Female(s) 50-59 (1780-1790) Mary GLENN Moore (1780) mother 1 Female(s) 5-9 (1830-1835) Niece? Children of Burt Moore and Miss Bruce and
Mary Glenn. Burt Moore and Miss Bruce had several children, none
of which are conclusively proven, however, it seems without doubt that
Joseph Moore is their son, as is James and Daniel. Definitive proof of
this has not been found, but it seems highly likely. Burt and Mary had
six children, who's names were recorded in the family Bible. In her
pension file she stated that she could not read, but that someone had
altered some of the data without her knowledge, but she gave the data as
copied from the record by Samuel Patterson (her step-grandson-in-law)
naming children: Sally, William, Ruth, Presley T. Edy and Hughey Moore.

Unknown
Daughter (1774/84). Burt Moore had an apparent daughter
this age. She was home in 1790 (no ages given, born before 1790), and
still home in 1800 (age 16-25, born ca 1774/84). She may still be
home in 1810 (age 26-44, born ca 1765/84), though that may be someone
else with them in 1810. This is probably Elizabeth Moore (c1778) who married Moses Anderson. They were neighbors to the Moores in Pendleton District, and later moved to Union Co, GA where they continued to be associated with the Moores. Also, they named their oldest known child "Burton Anderson". Other researchers gave me her maiden name as "Moore", though I’ve seen no direct proof that she was a Moore, or that she was Burt Moore’s daughter, however she fits in very well based on circumstantial evidence. Also, Moses Anderson was listed in Burt Moore's Will as someone owing him money, though no relationship was stated. There are three other bits of circumstantial evidence linking Moses Anderson and the Moores. First, they all moved to Union Co, GA together. Secondly, in 1850, Moses and Elizabeth were next door to Hugh Moore (Elizabeth's half brother) and Mary Glenn Moore, Hugh's mother. Thirdly, Moses and Elizabeth's daughter Margaret Anderson (1824) married Samuel Patterson (1805) who was first married to Jane Moore, daughter of Joseph (son of Burt). These families were obviously well acquainted with each other. Moses Anderson was listed on the 1810 census in Pendleton District just a few houses from Burt Moore. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Pendleton Dist, SC pg 146 Moses Anderson 10100-00100 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) Moses ANDERSON (1780/81) 1 Male(s) 0-9 (1800-1810) Burton ANDERSON (1809) son 1 Female(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) Elizabeth MOORE Anderson (1777/78) wife They were still in Pendleton for the 1820 census. 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Pendleton Dist, SC pg 221 Moses Anderson 310010-20010 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1775-1794) Moses ANDERSON (1780/81) 1 Male(s) 10-15 (1804-1810) Burton ANDERSON (1809) son 3 Male(s) 0-9 (1810-1820) Son? Unknown Son
(1784/90). Burt Moore had an apparent son this age. He was
home in 1790 (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90), and still home in 1800
(age 10-15, born ca 1784/90), but gone by 1810 so probably married or
dead by then. I’m reasonably sure that this is Joseph Moore (1786/87), but have no direct evidence. Joseph Moore was a neighbor to Burt Moore in Pendleton District, and he did name one of his sons "Burton Moore". Also, Joseph Moore was named in Burt's Will as someone who owed him money, though that doesn't prove he was his son, but it does prove they were acquainted. Joseph married Rebecca — by ca 1806, and later moved to Macon Co, NC, then on to Union Co, GA. See their own page for additional information. |
Unknown Son
(1784/90). Burt Moore had an apparent son this age. He was
home in 1790 (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90), and still home in 1800
(age 10-15, born ca 1784/90), but gone by 1810 so probably married or
dead by then. I don’t know who this might have been. Other researchers have told me that there is a James Moore (c1789) in this family. I’ve not yet seen any proof to back that up, but he would fit right here. Also, James Moore was named in Burt's Will as someone who owed him money, though that doesn't prove he was his son, but it does prove they were acquainted. |
Unknown Son
(1784/90). Burt Moore had an apparent son this age. He was
home in 1790 (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90), and still home in 1800
(age 10-15, born ca 1784/90), but gone by 1810 so probably married or
dead by then. Other researchers have told me that Daniel Moore (c1790) belongs in this family, and he would fit right her very well based on his age. I don't know what proof there is that he is Burt's son. Also, Daniel Moore was named in Burt's Will as someone who owed him money, though that doesn't prove he was his son, but it does prove they were acquainted. See his own page for additional information. |
Unknown Daughter (1784/90). Burt Moore had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1790 (no ages, born before 1790), and still home in 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90), but gone by 1810 so probably married or dead by then. She may still be home in 1810 if in the 26-44 age group (born ca 1765/84) which would work if she were born ca 1784, which could be the case. |
Unknown Daughter (1784/90). Burt Moore had an apparent daughter this age. She was not home in 1790, or perhaps she was. In 1790 Burt Moore had three females with him, presumably two daughters and his wife. However, his wife did die around this time, so she may have already been dead by 1790, and if so, then the 3rd female is probably this daughter (no ages, born before 1790). She was home in 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90), but gone by 1810 so probably married or dead by then. She may still be home in 1810 if in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1784/94) but I think that is probably a younger daughter born ca 1790/94, but I could be wrong. |
Unknown Son
(1790/94). Burt Moore had an apparent son this age. He was
home in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800), and still home in 1810
(age 16-25, born ca 1784/94), but gone by 1820, so probably married or
dead by then. A John Moore was named in Burt's Will as someone who owed him money, though that doesn't prove he was his son, but it does prove they were acquainted. |
Unknown Daughter (1790/94). Burt Moore had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800), and still home in 1810 (age 16-25, born ca 1784/94), but gone by 1820, so probably married or dead by then. |
Sarah Moore
was born 20 Nov 179- (per Pension File) presumably in Pendleton
Dist, SC. Her birth year was probably 1798. "Sally" (which is a
common nickname for "Sarah") was apparently home with her parents in
1800 ("under 10", born ca 1790/1800) and still apparently home in 1810
(age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800). She was not home in 1820, so probably
married by then. Other sources show that Sarah married James Bruce before 1820. James is a son of James Bruce (1760) and Priscilla Bradley. |
William Moore
was born 26 Oct 1800 (Per Burt Moore Pension file) in Pendleton
Dist, SC. He moved to Habersham Co, GA and later to Gilmer Co, GA where
he remained. He was named in the Burt Moore Pension files as a son.
See his own page for additional information. |
Ruth Moore
was born Jan 1802 (per Burt Moore Pension file). She was
apparently home with her parents in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca
1800/10) and still home in 1820 (age 16-25, born ca 1794/1804). She was
gone by 1830 so probably married or dead by then.
She was not mentioned in the 1867 document naming the children of Mary Glenn Moore, so she probably had died before then. I don't know who she married, or if she died unmarried. |
Presley Thornton Moore
was born -- Feb 18-- (per pension file). He was born ca
1804/05 or 1805/06 per various census records. He was apparently home in
1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10) and still home in 1820 (age
10-15, born ca 1804/10).
He married Rebecca --- before 1830. They lived in Macon Co, NC, Henderson Co, NC, and Union Co, GA. |
Edith Moore
was born 25 Aug 1810 (per Burt Moore Pension file) in Pendleton
Dist, SC. She was apparently home in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca
1810/20). She was gone by 1830 so probably married or dead by then. She married a Mr. Pait, but I have not found additional information on her, except that she was still alive in 1867. |
Hugh Moore was born 6
Jan 1822 in Pendleton District (now Pickens County), South Carolina. He
was home with his parents in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25). He was
head of household in 1840, and by 1850 he and his wife and children, and
his mother all moved to Union County, Georgia.
