Revision History:

·        31 Aug 2008 – Reformatted and updated by Marty Grant.

I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grandson of Joseph Moore and Rebecca (---).

Joseph Moore was born ca 1786/87 (per age on 1850 census) in South Carolina. His parents were listed on the 1790 census in Pendleton County, Ninety-Six District, South Carolina, so it seems likely that Joseph was born there, though technically, Pendleton was not created until 1789, and before that it was still Indian territory. This may mean they were living there while it was Indian Territory or else they moved there just prior to 1790. The part of Pendleton where they lived is now Pickens County, South Carolina.

I have no direct proof, but circumstantial evidence indicates that Joseph Moore is a son of Burton Moore and (---) Bruce.  The evidence used to come to this conclusion is that Joseph was a neighbor of theirs per the 1810 census, and that Burton did have an apparent son Joseph's age, and also that Joseph named one of his sons "Burton".  There may be some primary evidence proving this connection, but I do not have it.

In 1790, Joseph Moore would have been about 3 years old, so should be enumerated in the "under 16" age group (born ca 1774/90), and Burton Moore did have 3 sons that age with him in Pendleton County.

In 1791, Pendleton County was detached from Ninety-Six District, and made part of the new Washington District.

In 1798 (effective 1800), Washington District was abolished, and Pendleton County became Pendleton District.

For the 1800 census, Joseph would have been about 13 years old, so he should be enumerated in the age 10-15 category (born ca 1784/90), and Burton Moore had 3 sons that age with him in Pendleton District.

Joseph Moore married Rebecca --- in Pendleton District between 1800 and ca 1806. I have found no record of her maiden name, nor do I have any strong clues. She was born ca 1786/87 (per 1850 census) in South Carolina.

They were in Pendleton for the 1810 census. They were next door two houses from his parents and brother-in-law Moses Anderson was close by as well.

Between ca 1812 and ca 1815 Joseph Moore and family moved somewhere in Tennessee, but only briefly, and were back in South Carolina by ca 1818. This move is based on their daughter Jane Moore's birth in Tennessee ca 1815 as proven by her 1850 and 1860 census entries, and her marriage record which proves she is Joseph's daughter. I don't know where they went to in Tennessee, nor why, but I'd guess it was eastern Tennessee.

They were in Pendleton for the 1820 census. His section of the county was alphabetical by neighborhood (apparently), so I can't determine who his neighbors were, but he was in the same group with his brother-in-law Moses Anderson and with his Uncle James Bruce and a David Moore (could this be his brother Daniel Moore?).

In 1826, Pendleton District was abolished by being split into two new Districts (Anderson and Pickens). The Moores lived in the northern section which became Pickens District.

Around that same time (ca 1826), Joseph Moore and family moved just a few miles north west to the Toxaway River region of what was then Haywood County, North Carolina (now Transylvania County). They lived somewhere near the present community of Quebec in Transylvania County. This area was the border region between Haywood and Buncombe until 1829 when Macon County was formed, then it was a border region for all three counties until 1851 when Jackson County was formed, and finally it fell completely within Transylvania when it was formed in 1861.

In 1828, residents of Haywood County signed a Petition asking for the formation of a new county from the South Western part of Haywood. Joseph Moore was one of those signatories, and the petition also included household enumerations. Joseph was listed with 1 male over 21, 2 males under 21, 1 female, for 4 total family members. This does not seem to represent his entire household, so some must have remained in SC for a time at least, or else been residing with other relatives in NC (but probably nearby).

In 1829, Macon County was formed from Haywood County, and included the area where the Moores lived.

In Macon County Court on 26 Mar 1829, "Joseph Moore came into open court and took necessary oath for constable and gave bond March 26 1829".  This shows that Joseph was one of the first Constables in Macon County (they had 1 year terms). (Macon Co, NC Superior Court Minutes Mar 1829 - Apr 1832)

They were listed on the 1830 census in Macon County, North Carolina. Joseph's brother Presley T. Moore (1806) was next door on one side and John James was their neighbor on the other side. Son-in-law Samuel Patterson was two houses away.  Abraham Moore (1807) was just twelve houses away. He was a son of John Parker Moore (1765) who also originated in Halifax Co, VA as did Joseph's father Burton Moore. Many people think the two families are related, but no evidence has been found proving it.

On 5 Mar 1834, Joseph Moore (and Jesse Read) witnessed a deed from William Witmeir (Whitmire) of Pickens Co, SC to John W. Davis of Buncombe Co, NC. The land was on Toxaway River. It was proven in March 1837 Court by Joseph Moore. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book A page 426).

On 20 Feb 1836, Joseph More of Macon County, sold 50 acres to William Duckworth of Buncombe County for $200. The land was on Toxaway River on East side of Flat Creek. Witnesses were James Erwin Jr and Jonathan Lenard. I have not found where Joseph obtained this land. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book A page 536).

Between 1837 and 1840, Joseph Moore moved his family to the Gum Log region of Union County, Georgia. This was about 50-60 miles south west of where he had been living.

Joseph Moore was listed on the 1840 census of Union County, Georgia. His next door neighbors were John Winters and John Hudgins. Son Samuel Moore was three houses away, and son-in-law Samuel Patterson was just a few more houses away.

Joseph Moore was listed as a Voter on a 26 May 1849 Voter List for Gum Log District in Union County, Georgia.

Joseph and Rebecca Moore were listed on the 1850 census in Union County, Georgia. By this time all their children were gone, and they were living by themselves. Son Burton Moore was next door, and son William Moore was two houses away.

They were in Polk Co., TN for the 1860 census: p 193/145 10th Dist # 1322/1322 Burton PO Joseph Moore, 72 SC ML $20 (ML probably means Mine Laborer); Rebecca, 73 SC; Owen Justice, 51 GA; Jackson Moore, 20 GA; Jane, 19 GA.

I don’t know who Jackson Moore (c1840) and Jane (c1841) were. They could be grandchildren. Jackson could be the Jackson V. Moore (c1842), son of William (1800), Joseph’s half brother. That Jackson didn’t have a sister named Jane, so perhaps she is his wife. Jackson (son of William) is listed with his parents in 1860 in Gilmer Co., GA (“Jackson” age 20). He could be listed in both places, or it could be two different people.

I have no record of Joseph or Rebecca after 1860.

Children of Joseph Moore and Rebecca (---).Joseph Moore and Rebecca --- had several children, only one of which is proven (Jane). I am quite sure that Samuel, Burton and William are their sons based on strong circumstantial evidence.

1.      Unknown Son (1804/10)

2.      Unknown Son (1810/15) Samuel Moore (c1812)

3.      Unknown Son (1810/15)

4.      Jane Moore (c1815)

5.      Unknown Daughter (1815/20)

6.      Unknown Son (1815/20) Burton Moore (c1818)

7.      Unknown Daughter (1820/25)

8.      Unknown Son (1825/30) William Moore (c1825)

9.      Unknown Son (1835/40) Grandson?

Unknown Son (1804/10). Joseph Moore had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), and home in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10), but gone by 1830, so probably married or dead by then.

This son is unidentified.

Unknown Son (1810/15). Joseph Moore had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and home in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15), but gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.

I'm quite sure that this is Samuel Moore (c1812), for he was a neighbor to Joseph in 1840. See his own page for additional information.

Unknown Son (1810/15). Joseph Moore had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and home in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25), but gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.

I don't know who this was, but there is an Abraham Moore (1810/20) in Union Co, GA on the 1840 census. He is only a few houses from Joseph Moore, so he certainly could be this unknown son. I didn't find this Abraham Moore in 1850, but I think I found him in 1860 in DeKalb Co., AL. I’m not sure it is the same man from 1840 Union Co., GA but it fits: Abraham Moore 47 TN; Mary A. 45 SC; Rebecca 24 NC; Joseph 22 NC; Martha J. 19 GA; Elisha H. 18 GA; William 14 GA; Rutha A. 13 GA; Frances E. (female) 11 GA; Nathan C. 8 GA; Mary A. 5 AL. Notice that the two oldest children are named Joseph and Rebecca. That is certainly a clue this Abraham is a son of Joseph and Rebecca (---) Moore! Also note that Abraham was born in TN ca 1813. His next sibling Jane was born in TN in 1815, so that fits as well.

I wasn’t able to find Abraham Moore on the 1870 census. I may have found him on the 1880 census in Nashville, TN age 66, but I’m not positive it is the same person from 1860 Dekalb Co., AL. He is listed as born in TN, both parents born in SC, which fits perfectly if he is a son of Joseph & Rebecca.

More research is needed to determine if Abraham Moore (c1813 TN) of NC, GA and Dekalb Co., AL is a son of Joseph Moore or not.

Jane Moore was born ca 1814/15 (per 1860 census) in Tennessee (per 1850 and 1860 census). I don't know what county. She is a proven child of Joseph Moore as stated on her 1830 marriage bond in Macon County, North Carolina.

Jane was apparently home with her parents in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20).

On 8 Mar 1830, Samuel Patterson obtained a marriage bond in Macon County, North Carolina to marry Jane Moore. Since she was only 15, her father Joseph Moore had to give consent.

See their own page for additional information.

Unknown Daughter (1815/20). Joseph Moore had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and home in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20), but gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.

I have no strong suspects as to who this daughter was. Assuming she married, she may have married in Macon Co, NC 1830-1840, or in Union Co, GA ca 1837-1840. There is only one female Moore marriage in Union Co, GA during this period, and that is for Mary Moore who married Nathaniel Payne in 1839. I have additional data on her, she was born ca 1821/22 in NC, and is probably a daughter of John B. Moore (1780/90) of Lumpkin so I doubt she is Joseph's daughter.

In Macon County, there are three Moore marriages in the 1830-1840 period, but none can be this daughter based on several factors.

Unknown Son (1815/20). Joseph Moore had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and home in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20), and still home in 1840 (age 20-29, born ca 1810/20), but gone by 1850, so probably married or dead by then.

I'm quite sure that this is Burton Moore (c1818), for he was a neighbor to Joseph in 1850. See his own page for additional information.

Unknown Daughter (1820/25). Joseph Moore had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), but gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.

I have found no strong suspects as to who this daughter might have been.

Unknown Son (1825/30). Joseph Moore had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), and still home in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25), but gone by 1850, so probably married or dead by then.

I'm quite sure that this is William Moore (c1825), for he was a neighbor to Joseph in 1850. See his own page for additional information.

Unknown Son (1835/40). Joseph Moore had an apparent son (or grandson?) this age. He was home in 1840 (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), but gone by 1850. He may not be a son at all, but a grandson, or perhaps a nephew or something.

This could be Jackson Moore (c1840) who was with Joseph in 1860. If so, he is probably a grandson.
