I (Marty Grant) am not related to James W. Patterson or Levicy Roberts as far as I know.

James W. Patterson was born ca 1816/17 in Buncombe Co, NC (now Yancey Co, NC). He is most likely a son of Robert and Catherine Patterson, though I have no direct proof that he is their son, but circumstantial evidence makes it seem highly likely.

James was apparently with his parents for the 1820 census in Buncombe, as Robert Patterson had a son with him under age 10 (born ca 1810/20).

James was still apparently with his parents for the 1830 census in Buncombe, in the age 10-14 category (born ca 1815/20).

James was still apparently with his parents for the 1840 census in Yancey County, in the age 20-29 category (born ca 1810/20).

James W. Patterson married Levicy --- between 1840 and ca 1845, presumably in Yancey County. Other researchers have listed her maiden name as "Roberts". This could be correct, but I don't know what the evidence for that is.

James and Levicy and family were listed on the 1850 census in Yancey Co, NC. They weren't listed very close to any other Pattersons, but the rest of his family (parents, brothers) were just a few pages away. James' neighbors on either side in 1850 were John Brinkley and Zachary Smith. A Judith Rose, age 9 was with the Patterson family in 1850. I don't know if she is related somehow or not.

I have not traced this family beyond this point yet, but will do so when time permits. James had Real Property ($800 worth) in 1850, so there should be deed records for him. Yancey County records may hold a great deal more info on James and family.

Children

James and Levicy had two children by the time of the 1850 census, and probably had many more afterwards, so I'll not discuss them individually until I get more information on them.
