I (Marty Grant) am not related to Robert Patterson as far as I know.
Robert Patterson was born ca 1789/90 in Tennessee (per the 1850 census). I don't know where in Tennessee it might have been, but probably in east Tennessee somewhere.
There was another Robert Patterson in Buncombe Co, NC records, who owned land on Big Ivy Creek and perhaps in some cases, I have mixed up their records.
I don't know who Robert Patterson's parents were. The first record I have for him is an 1808 deed for land in Buncombe Co, NC on Jacks Creek and Sames (Sams) Branch (now Yancey Co, NC). It should be noted that an apparent widow named Jane Patterson also had land on Jacks Creek, and she could very easily be Robert's mother, in fact, she is my prime suspect at this point, but other than proximity, I have no proof that they are mother and son. Jane was listed on the 1790 census in Burke Co, NC and in 1830 in Buncombe (if the same person).
As mentioned before, Robert Patterson purchased land on 10 Mar 1808 from Joseph Dobson of Burke Co, NC (Robert was listed "of Buncombe Co". The land was purchased for $170, for land on waters of Jacks Creek and on Sames Branch (Sams Branch), beginning on Robeson's corner, and John Hughes old line, and Edwards line, including "Joshua Wiles improvements on Sames Branch". Witnessed by John Sams and Nancy Young. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 395 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).
The above land was in the part of Buncombe that became Yancey County in 1833.
It should be noted that on the same date (10 Mar 1808), Joseph Dobson sold 150 acres on Jacks Creek to Jane Patterson, Robert's suspected mother. (Buncombe Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 144).
Robert Patterson married Catherine --- between 1800 and 1810, presumably closer to 1810 (since no children yet by 1810 census), and also presumably in Buncombe Co, NC. I have no clues as to Catherine's maiden name. She was born ca 1795/96 in NC, presumably Buncombe County.
Robert Patterson was listed on the 1810 census in Buncombe County. There were two Roberts listed, this one and the older Robert Patterson of Big Ivy. No other Pattersons were nearby. Robert was listed between John Sams and Charles Robeson.

Robert was still in Buncombe Co, NC for the 1820 census. He was not listed near any other Pattersons. His neighbors on either side were James Randal and Nancy Wyatt.

Robert was still in Buncombe County for the 1830 census. Again, he was not listed near any other Pattersons. This time he had an incredibly large household, so it appears that another family was residing with him. Presumably these were relatives or neighbors who were living with them for some reason or another. None of these "extra" people were still with Robert in 1840. Robert's neighbors on either side in 1830 were Gabriel Sams and Jacob Tipton.

In 1833, Yancey County was formed from part of Buncombe County, including the area where the Pattersons lived.
Robert Patterson was listed on the 1835 Congressional Voter List as having voted in Yancey County in Typton's Precinct.
Robert was listed on the 1840 census in Yancey County, next door to his son Jehu. On the other side was Moses Huneycutt.

Robert and family were listed on the 1850 census in Yancey Co, NC. Their son William was three houses away. Robert's neighbors on either side were David P. Tipton and Mary Tipton (widow?).

I have not traced this family beyond this point yet, but will do so when time permits. Robert had Real Property ($1200 worth) in 1850, so there should be deed records for him. Yancey County records may hold a great deal more info on Robert and family.
Robert and Catherine had at least six children and probably a few more (per the census records). Not all are identified. Several of these are unproven, but I'm reasonably sure they belong to Robert and Catherine. There is a 25 year gap between the first child and the last (c1812 to c1837), so it is possible that Catherine was not the first wife, but a second, or that the younger children were actually grandkids instead. Or, they were just Catherine's, as this is certainly possible.
Jehu R. Patterson was born ca 1811/12 in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. I've seen no direct proof that he is a son of Robert and Catherine, but he lived near them, and it seems highly likely that they are his parents (no other suspects around).
Jehu R. Patterson married Nancy --- (perhaps Wyatt or Hampton) ca 1830/34 in Yancey Co, NC. See his own page for additional information.
William B. Patterson was born ca 1813/14 in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. I've seen no direct proof that he is a son of Robert and Catherine, but he lived near them, and it seems highly likely that they are his parents.
William B. Patterson married Lucinda --- (perhaps Edwards) ca 1830/39 in Yancey Co, NC. See his own page for additional information.
James W. Patterson was born ca 1816/17 in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. I've seen no direct proof that he is a son of Robert and Catherine, but he lived near them, and it seems highly likely that they are his parents.
James W. Patterson married Levicy --- (perhaps Roberts) ca 1840/45 in Yancey Co, NC. See his own page for additional information.
Nancy Patterson was born ca 1817/18 in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. I don't know what proof there is that she was a Patterson, nor a child of Robert and Catherine, but I've placed her here based on a 1997 query by Jennifer Day which mentioned they had a daughter "Nancey" who married "Malcomb McCourry".
I found that Robert and Catherine did have a daughter that age with them in 1820 and 1830, but she was gone by 1840. Nancy might have been with her brother Jehu R. Patterson, as he had an "extra" female her age with him in 1840.
Nancy Patterson married Malcomb McCurry (McCourry) between 1840 and 1843, in Yancey Co, NC.
"Malcomb McCurry" and wife Nancy and family were in Yancey Co, NC for the 1850 census, just a few households from her brother James. I don't have it typed up yet for inclusion here.
I have no additional data on them at present.
Unknown Daughter (c1820/25). Robert Patterson had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25). She was still home with him in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25), but gone by 1850, so had either married or died during the 1840's. I have no clues who this daughter might have been.
Unknown Daughter (c1825/30). Robert Patterson had an apparent daughter close to this age with him in 1830 (age under 5 born ca 1825/30). She was still home with him in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25). Since those two don't reconcile exactly, it can be assumed she was born ca 1825, which makes it fit perfectly. She was gone by 1850, so had either married or died during the 1840's. I have no clues who this daughter might have been.
Reuben W. Patterson was born ca 1830/31 in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census, and definitely with them in 1850.
"R. W. Patterson" married Mary Amanda Ayers on 1 Aug 1853 in Yancey Co, NC. I have not followed up on this family yet, so have no additional information, except that I believe this is the same Amanda who was a child of James W. and Emily Ayers listed in Yancey Co, NC for the 1850 census.
Malinda Patterson was born ca 1836/37 in Yancey Co, NC. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census, and definitely with them in 1850.
Malinda Patterson married James Bryant on 10 Aug 1854 in Yancey Co, NC. I have not followed up on this family yet, so have no additional information, except that I believe this is the same James who was a son of Thomas and Nancy Bryant listed in Yancey Co, NC for the 1850 census.
