I (Marty Grant) am not related to John Patterson as far as I know. I think there is a reasonable chance that he is related to my Patterson ancestors, beginning with Matthew Patterson. Matthew's son (Matthew Jr) and Grandson (Samuel) lived in fairly close proximity to John's family at one point in time.
John Patterson was born ca 1809/10 (per 1850 census). He was born in South Carolina per the various census records. I don't know what county, but if his parents are who I suspect, then he was probably born in Edgefield District, South Carolina.
I don't know who John's parents are, but the best suspect is West Patterson and Frances ---. They were neighbors over several years in what is now Transylvania County, NC..
John Patterson would have been 1 year old or less (if born yet) for the 1810 census, so he should be listed in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1800/10). West Patterson did have an apparent son that age with him in Edgefield District, SC. Many other Pattersons in Western NC and Upper West SC had apparent sons this age, too many to list here.
John Patterson would have been about 10 years old by the time of the 1820 census. His presumed father West Patterson has not yet been found on the 1820 census. There were many other Pattersons in the area that had apparent sons that age.
John would have been about 20 years of age by the time of the 1830 census, so he should be enumerated in either the 20-29 age group (born ca 1800/10) or in the 15-19 age group (born ca 1810/15). West Patterson did not have any sons that age with him, but he had 3 boys 10-15 (born ca 1815/20), who are otherwise unidentified. One of the could be John, mis-enumerated. On the other hand, perhaps West was not his father. West was in Buncombe Co, NC in 1830, and I've not found any records showing John in that county.
Sometime before ca 1838, John Patterson married Malinda ---. She was born ca 1813/14 in SC. I don't know where they married, their first child was born in Macon Co, NC.
Just like his presumed father West, John apparently lived in or near the Cane Break or Hogback community where his family was found later on. This area was in Haywood County until Macon was formed in 1828, then it was in Macon until 1851 when Jackson was formed, and then in 1861 it became Transylvania County. This area was in the border region with Buncombe County until 1838 when Henderson was formed. (Then until 1861 when Transylvania was formed). West's family apparently lived on both sides of the old borders, so that makes him appear in several different counties though probably never far from the same place. This was also quite close to the Pickens District, SC border.
In 1838 Henderson County was formed from the section of Buncombe County where Herren had been living, but I think he was already "across the border" in Macon County by then.
John Patterson was listed on the 1840 census in Macon County just a couple of houses from his presumed father West Patterson.

They were listed on the 1850 census in Macon County in Cane Break District. They were just seven houses from Frances, widow of West Patterson, his presumed parents. He was also just 3 houses from Herren Patterson (c1812), a possible brother. This census record shows John Patterson with $500 worth of real property, but I've found no deeds showing him acquiring any land in Macon County.

In 1851, Jackson County was formed from the section of Macon County where the Pattersons were living.
I did not find them on the 1860 census in Jackson Co, NC, though brother Herren Patterson was there, as was another possible brother Asa Patterson (c1812). They should have been listed around there somewhere. They may have been in Pickens Dist, SC, but the census index I have does not show them there (nor any others, though there should be several Pattersons there in 1860).
In 1861, Transylvania County was formed from the section of Jackson where the Pattersons were living.
John Patterson apparently died in the 1860's, for his wife Malinda was listed on the 1870 census as an apparent widow in Transylvania County, near many of their children and other Pattersons in Hogback Township.

Malinda and her children were all in neighboring Oconee County, South Carolina for the 1880 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
John and Malinda (---) Patterson had 6 known children per the various census records. I've found a little bit of additional data on them in the census records.
