I (Marty Grant) am not related to Herren Patterson as far as I know. I think there is a reasonable chance that he is related to my Patterson ancestors, beginning with Matthew Patterson. Matthew's son (Matthew Jr) and Grandson (Samuel) lived in fairly close proximity to Herren's family at one point in time.

Herren Patterson was born ca 1811/12 (per 1850 census). He was born in South Carolina per the various census records. I don't know what county, but if his parents are who I suspect, then he was probably born in Edgefield District, South Carolina.

The name "Herren" may indicate a connection to the Herren family, though I don't know what connection there may be.

I don't know who Herren's parents are, but the best suspect is West Patterson and Frances ---. They were neighbors over several years in different counties, and Herren named one of his own sons "West", so their is certainly a connection.

Herren Patterson would have been about 8 years old by the time of the 1820 census, so should be enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). His presumed father West Patterson has not yet been found on the 1820 census. Many other Pattersons in Western NC and Upper West SC had apparent sons this age, too many to list here.

Herren would have been roughly 18 years of age by the time of the 1830 census, so he should be enumerated in the 15-19 age group (born ca 1810/15). West Patterson did not have any sons that age with him, but he had 3 boys 10-15 (born ca 1815/20), who are otherwise unidentified. One of the could be Herren, mis-enumerated. On the other hand, perhaps West was not his father. West was in Buncombe Co, NC in 1830, and from other records I know that Herren was also there by 1834. There were other Pattersons in Buncombe County in 1830, but I don't believe Herren was living with any of them.

In July 1834 Buncombe County Court, Herrin Patterson was listed on the insolvents list (owing back taxes), owing for 1 poll tax (for himself, presumably). His alleged father West Patterson was listed in court the same month, but for a different reason.

Sometime in the 1830-1835 time period, Herren Patterson married Amandine ---. She was born ca 1814/15 in SC, and their first known child was also born in SC, so they may have married there instead of in Buncombe Co, NC. (West Patterson's family lived in the area right along the border). If they did marry in SC, I suppose it was in Pickens District. I don't know Amandine's maiden name.

Just like his presumed father West, Herren apparently lived in or near the Cane Break or Hogback community where his family was found later on. This area was in Haywood County until Macon was formed in 1828, then it was in Macon until 1851 when Jackson was formed, and then in 1861 it became Transylvania County. This area was in the border region with Buncombe County until 1838 when Henderson was formed. (Then until 1861 when Transylvania was formed). Herren and West's families apparently lived on both sides of the old borders, so that makes him appear in several different counties though probably never far from the same place. This was also quite close to the Pickens District, SC border.

In 1838 Henderson County was formed from the section of Buncombe County where Herren had been living, but I think he was already "across the border" in Macon County by then.

Herren Patterson was listed twice on the 1840 census. Once in Macon County and again in Pickens Dist, SC. This could be two different Herren Pattersons, but that doesn't seem likely. In Macon County he was not listed near his presumed relatives. His neighbors were George Long and Jacob Shope. In Pickens Dist, SC he was next door to Robert Stewart Jr and Daniel Walker. He was just two houses from Hugh Moore who was a brother-in-law to my ancestor Samuel Patterson (1805). Is this a coincidence? Here are both census listings (which differ only slightly). The main difference is that in Macon they only had a young son, but in Pickens, only a young daughter, though in fact that should have had one of each in both places (assuming that Matthew is his son).

They were listed on the 1850 census in Macon County in Cane Break District. They were just four houses from Frances, widow of West Patterson, his presumed parents. He was also just 3 houses from John Patterson (c1810), a possible brother. Herren had two Pattersons listed with him who were listed after his children, so probably not his kids, but possibly younger siblings, or nephews, namely Evan S. Patterson (c1828) and Matthew Patterson (c1836). Matthew is of proper age to be a son of Herren, but I don't know for sure if he is or not. I should also note that the name "Matthew" is frequently used in my own Patterson line in that timeframe. This census record shows Herren Patterson with $600 worth of real property, but I've found no deeds showing him acquiring any land in Macon County.

In 1851, Jackson County was formed from the section of Macon County where the Pattersons were living.

They were listed on the 1860 census in Jackson Co, NC next door to Asa Patterson (c1812), a probable brother or cousin. Evan and Matthew were not with them in 1860.

In 1861, Transylvania County was formed from the section of Jackson where the Pattersons were living.

Amandine --- Patterson apparently died in the 1860's, for she was not with Herren for the 1870 census.

Herren was listed on the 1870 census in Transylvania County in Hogback Township. His daughter Julie Ann was with him, but I didn't find his other children.

I did not find Herren on the 1880 census. He apparently died in the 1870's in Transylvania Co, NC.

Children

Herren and Amandine (---) Patterson had 3 known children (Julie Ann, West and Moses) with them in 1850 and 1860. Julie Ann was still home in 1870. I have not found additional information on any of them. It is possible that Matthew (c1836) was also their child, but I get the feeling he is a nephew or a much younger brother.
