I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great grand nephew of John Roberts.
Special thanks to Jim Roberts, Bob Roberts and Robert Stapleton for data shared on this family.
Isaac Roberts was born ca 1774/1784 in Wayne Co, NC, somewhere in the Walnut Creek vicinity. He is a proven son of John Roberts and Nancy (---) of Wayne Co, NC.
Isaac Roberts was apparently home with his parents for the 1790 and 1800 census.
John Roberts died circa February 1803 in Wayne Co, NC. His estate records were numerous, and Isaac Roberts was named as one of the administrators (along with his brother Henry Roberts). This indicates that Isaac was at least 21 by 1803, so born ca 1782 or before. That fits within his census ages of ca 1774/84.
In July 1803, John Roberts Sr's heirs petition the New Bern District Court (which was the State court covering several counties, including Wayne) for a division of the estate of John Roberts. Owen Roberts was named in this record. The following is an almost complete transcript of that record:
Isaac Roberts, Stephen Grant and his wife Patience, Anne Roberts, Owen Roberts, Bright Roberts, Polly Roberts, (the latter 4 minors) by their next friend Isaac Roberts, complain that John Roberts of Wayne County, died intestate owning 1000 or 1500 acres in Wayne County, 600 acres in Lenoir County, 600 in Johnston County, and 975 acres in Duplin County. that he left a widow Nancy Roberts and 9 children: Charite Roberts married to Spyers Ham, Henry Roberts, John Roberts & the above said petitioners. The petitioners state that after Charite Roberts married Spyers Ham, John Roberts gave a deed to Spyers Ham for 110 3/4 acres in Wayne County on Ready Swamp on the prong of Stony Creek, William Ham the father of Spyers paying to said John Roberts 75L. that said John Roberts gave to his son Henry Roberts, 200 acres joining the same, and to his son John Roberts 975 acres in Duplin County, but no allotment to the rest of his children. the widow had received dower of 509 acres in Wayne Co. Petition for division. Commissioners: Richard Croom, Benjamin Smith (Taylor), John Gaylord, William Smith, Barney McKinney. 1 Oct 1803 Division of the lands of John Roberts, decd. Isaac Roberts drew the Hall & Johnston land of x00 acres. Anne Roberts drew the Trent land in Lenoir County of 670 acres. Patience Grant drew 422 acres. Owen Roberts drew 66 acres and the Walnut Pocoson called the Jernigan land of 200 acres. Bright Roberts drew 200 acres. Mary Roberts drew 227 acres. Plat shown.
The above record shows that Isaac Roberts received the "Hall and Johnston" lands. The "Hall" land is probably the land that Jesse Hall sold John Roberts in 1801 on the North Side of Neuse River on Dawson's Branch. The "Johnston" land may refer to the 600 acres Josiah Stafford sold John Roberts in 1787 in Johnston County, NC. Or it may refer to some other land, since several Johnston families were adjoining land owners of the Roberts family.
On 10 Sep 1805 the remaining estate of John Roberts was divided into 9 shares, including 1 share to Isaac Roberts. (From John Roberts Loose Estate File)
Isaac Roberts married Nancy Smith sometime before 1807, presumably in Wayne Co, NC. Nancy is a daughter of Benjamin Smith and Tabitha Exum. (Note: For years researchers thought Nancy Smith, daughter of Benjamin, was the wife of John Roberts, but that just doesn't work out, she has to be Isaac's wife instead in my opinion.)
On 20 Apr 1807 Benjamin Smith made his Will in Wayne Co., NC naming several heirs including "my daughter Nancy Roberts." He didn't list her husband's name, but I'm convinced she was the same Nancy who married Isaac Roberts (and not his father John Roberts). The primary reason that Nancy Smith Roberts can't be John Roberts' wife is that John's wife is about the same age as Benjamin Smith, so therefore he can't be her father. Nancy wife of Isaac Roberts, however, is right in line with Benjamin Smith's other children. Not only that, Isaac and Nancy named a son "Benjamin" Roberts, probably in honor of her father.
Isaac Roberts was listed on the 1810 census in Wayne County, NC. He was about 10 houses from his brother Henry Roberts, and only four houses from his grandmother Tabitha Smith, widow of Benjamin Smith. This census showed Isaac Roberts with 3 slaves.
1810 census analysis (based on available evidence):

(1800/10)
Of special interest (and also quite confusing) is the fact that Isaac's wife Nancy supposedly died 1810 in Moore Co, NC. Her tombstone at the Farrar Cemetery shows "Nancy Roberts, consort of Isaac Roberts 1772-1810". The family did move there, but it was after 1812, and several of Nancy's children were born after 1810, so this death date has to be wrong, in my opinion anyway. I haven't seen the tombstone, so I don't know if it actually says "1810" or if that is a misreading. Of course, the stone could have been erected years after her death, and the wrong date recorded.
On 19 Jul 1811 Stephen Grant and wife Patience (Isaac's sister) sold Isaac Roberts 444 acres in Wayne Co, NC, on the west side of Walnut Creek. This was 422 acres Patience inherited from her father John Roberts, and 22 additional acres. Witnesses were Owen Roberts and Stephen Thompson. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 371).
On 1 Apr 1812 Isaac Roberts of Wayne Co, NC sold the 444 acres to Nicholas Washington, being the same land purchased from Stephen and Patience Grant. Witnesses were Simon Johnson and Barnabas McKinne. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 396).
Isaac Roberts was mentioned in a Petition dated circa 1814 (in his father's estate file) regarding issues related to a property conflict. This document didn't give Isaac's place of residence though.
I never found a record of Isaac selling the "Hall and Johnston land" that he inherited from his father.
Isaac Roberts had moved to Moore Co, NC by 1815, for that year he was listed on the tax list in that county. He was listed with 1,650 acres, valued at $1,250. His brothers Bright Roberts, and Owen Roberts were also listed there. His brother-in-law Spias Ham was also listed there, so it looks like a good portion of the family moved there about the same time. Unfortunately many of the early Moore County records are lost, so we don't know when they purchased land there, but we do know it was between 1810 and 1815.
I think that Isaac's wife Nancy died ca 1814 in Moore Co, NC. Her last known child (James) was born ca 1813/14 (age 36 on 1850 census).
I haven't been able to locate Isaac Roberts on the 1820 census. He should be in Moore County, I presume, but I didn't find him. His brother Bright Roberts was listed there. Jim Roberts has told me that Isaac lived in the Carbonton area, which is right along the Chatham County border, so it is possible the Moore County census taker thought he was in Chatham, and the Chatham County census taker thought he was in Moore, so he didn't get listed on either one. Either that, or I just missed him somehow.
Isaac Roberts was listed on the 1830 and 1840 Moore Co, NC census, but I don't have the enumerations yet.
Isaac Roberts married Charity Cox ca 1835 in Moore Co, NC. (Thanks to Jim Roberts for her maiden name). By this time, Isaac's children by his first wife were all grown.
Isaac Roberts made his Will in Moore County on 11 July 1842 and it was proven in 1847, meaning he died about that time. This is recorded in Moore County Will Book B page 223. Jim Roberts provided the following transcript of this will (I put the names in bold print):

Though only three children by his second wife were named in his Will, they had one additional child born after the Will was made: Bright Roberts.
Isaac Roberts died sometime before October 1847.
Charity Roberts and her children were listed on the 1850 census in Moore County. All of Isaac's children by his first wife Nancy, had left Moore County by this time, except for Wiley who had died, leaving his widow and children still in Moore County.

I haven't followed up on this family beyond the 1850 census, but Jim and Bob Roberts have shared data with me on their branch of the family. And Robert Stapleton has shared data with me on his branch of the family.
Isaac Roberts had several children by his first wife Nancy, and several by his second wife Charity Cox. All of his children (except Bright, born after 1842) were named in his 1842 will.
Wiley Roberts was born 23 Nov 1807 (per his family bible), presumably in Wayne Co, NC. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1810 census (Wayne Co, NC).
Wiley married Lydia W. Marsh before 1837 in Moore Co, NC.
I don't have them on the 1840 census, but I suppose they should be in Moore County.
Wiley Roberts was named in his father's 1842 Will.
Wiley Roberts made his Will on 19 Apr 1849 in Moore Co, NC, naming his wife Lydia, sister Candiss Tyson, brother-in-law John McIntosh, son Charles Roberts, brother James Roberts, father-in-law Robert Marsh and brother-in-law William Marsh. (Moore Co, NC Will Book B page 203).
Wiley died sometime after 19 Apr 1849. His widow and children were listed on the 1850 census in Moore County.

Widow Lydia Marsh Roberts married on 20 Dec 1855 to R. C. Drake in Moore Co, NC. She died in 1856 in Moore Co, NC.
Special thanks to Bob and Jim Roberts for data on descendants of Wiley Roberts.
Candice Roberts was born ca 1809/10, presumably in Wayne Co, NC. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1810 census (Wayne Co, NC).
Candice Roberts married Josiah H. Tyson on 1 Mar 1827 in Moore Co, NC (date per Robert Stapleton).
Josiah Tyson died before 11 Jul 1842, for on that date, Candice's father Isaac Roberts made his will and named his daughter "Candice, widow of James H. Tyson" (I've seen this both as "James" and "Josiah", so I'm not totally sure which is correct).
The widow Candice Roberts Tyson moved to Chickasaw Co, Mississippi prior to 1850 and was listed on the census there with her sister Nancy Roberts McIntosh. (I don't have this census record typed up yet).
In 1860, Candice was still there, and residing with her married daughter and son-in-law Calvin Ivy. And by 1870 they were in Clay Co, MS. (Thanks to Robert Stapleton for those references).
Unknown Daughter was born ca 1800/10, presumably in Wayne Co, NC. This child was with Isaac Roberts for the 1810 census. It is entirely possible that this is Nancy instead of another daughter, if her ca 1812 birth date is off. Otherwise, I don't know who this child is. She may have died before 1842, as no additional daughters were named in Isaac Roberts' Will.
Nancy Roberts was born ca 1811/12 in North Carolina, but whether Wayne or Moore County, I can't say. Her birth date is arrived at by her 1850 and 1860 census ages (38 and 48 respectively). This puts her birth "after" her mother's reported death date of 1810 (which I feel is incorrect anyway).
Sometime before ca 1832, Nancy Roberts married John McIntosh in Moore Co, NC.
Nancy and family moved to Alabama between ca 1832 and 1834. I don't know which county they lived in. Between ca 1840 and ca 1844 they moved from Alabama to Chickasaw Co, MS.
In Isaac Roberts' Will of 11 Jul 1842 he named his "daughter Nancy, wife of John McIntosh".
John and Nancy and family were listed on the 1850 census in Chickasaw Co, MS. Nancy's widowed sister Candice Tyson was residing with them, as well as their brother James Roberts.
The McIntosh family was still in Chickasaw Co, MS for the 1860 census. (Thanks to Robert Stapleton for that reference).
Benjamin Roberts was born ca 1810/1814 in either Wayne or Moore Co, NC. I have this birth date based on him being named after his sister Nancy (c1812) and before brother James (c1814) in Isaac Roberts' Will. In fact, the Will is the only record I have for Benjamin (so far).
Benjamin Roberts was named in Isaac Roberts' Will dated 11 Jul 1842 in Moore Co, NC. I didn't find a Benjamin Roberts on the 1850 census in close proximity to any other members of this family. However, there were several Benjamin Roberts around. Jim Roberts thinks that Benjamin may have died after 1842, but before 1850. This could be. Otherwise, he might turn up somewhere.
James Roberts was born ca 1813/14 in either Wayne or Moore Co, NC. James was "not of sound mind" per his father's Will (1842).
James Roberts was named in Isaac Roberts Will dated 11 Jul 1842, and he was given into the care of his brother Wiley Roberts. And he willed him a slave Henry for consideration of taking care of James.
Wiley Roberts died soon afterwards, and in his Will dated 19 Apr 1849, he gave James Roberts into the care of his brother-in-law John McIntosh of Mississippi, and also transferred the Henry to them as well to take care of James.
James Roberts was listed on the 1850 census with John and Nancy McIntosh family in Chickasaw Co, MS.
Isaac Roberts was born ca 1834/35 in Moore Co, NC. He was named in his father's Will (1842). He was home with his widowed mother for the 1850 census in Moore Co, NC.
I currently have no additional data on Isaac, but Jim Roberts told me that Isaac was a Confederate Soldier in the Civil War.
Mary Roberts was born ca 1839/40 in Moore Co, NC. She was named in her father's Will (1842). She was home with her widowed mother for the 1850 census in Moore Co, NC.
I currently have no additional data on Mary.
John M. Roberts was born ca 1841/42 in Moore Co, NC. He was named in his father's Will (1842). He was home with his widowed mother for the 1850 census in Moore Co, NC.
I currently have no additional data on John, but Jim Roberts told me that John was a Confederate Soldier in the Civil War.
Bright Roberts was born ca 1843/44 in Moore Co, NC. He was not named in his father's Will, since it was made prior to his birth.
He was home with his widowed mother for the 1850 census in Moore Co, NC.
I currently have no additional data on Bright, but Jim Roberts told me that Bright was a Confederate Soldier in the Civil War.
