I (Marty Grant) do not know how (or if) I'm related to Newell Stuart.
Newell Stuart (also "Stewart") was born ca 1812/13 in North Carolina. I don't know what county. He lived in Ashe County later on, but I don't think he was born there. It is possible that he was born in Surry Co, NC if his parents are the ones I think they are (see below).
I don't know who Newell's parents are for sure, but I've seen him listed as a child of Joseph Stewart and Margaret Dean of Surry Co, NC and Patrick and Grayson Co, VA. I don't know what the source for that connection is, but it could be correct. I can't say for sure.
Presumably, Newell would have been home with his parents for the 1820 and 1830 census. There were no Stewarts in Ashe County during those years, so he must have moved there from elsewhere. There were Stewarts all over western NC in 1820 including some in Surry County, and also in Wilkes County (which bordered Ashe County). Newell's possible father Joseph Stewart, was in Grayson Co, VA in 1820. I don't have his census enumerations, so I don't know if he had a son Newell's age. Grayson Co, VA bordered North Carolina, so that was not far away.
In 1830, Newell would have been approximately 17 years old, so he should be enumerated in the age 15-19 category (c1810/15). There were no Stewarts in Ashe County, and only one in neighboring Wilkes County (and he had no one this age with him). Joseph Stewart was not in NC in 1830. I don't have the listing, but I suspect he was still in Grayson Co, VA.
Newell Stuart married Margaret --- before ca 1838, possibly in Ashe County, or elsewhere. I don't know what her maiden name could be.
Newell Stuart was listed on the 1840 census in Ashe County. He was the only Stewart listed there that year.

Newell Stuart was listed on the 1850 census in Ashe Co, NC. There were two other Stuarts in the county by 1850, but not listed nearby. They are of similar age to Newell, and could be brothers: Joseph Stuart (c1815) and Jackson Stuart (c1820). Newell was listed between the families of Hardin Powers and Charles Waddle.

I have no data on them beyond this point.
Newell and Margaret Stewart had three children by the time of the 1850 census. They may have had others after 1850.
