I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grand nephew of David Stroud.
David Stroud was born ca 1776/77 (per 1850 census). He was probably born in Orange County, North Carolina, assuming he was the son of Peter Stroud Sr as I believe to be the case.
David Stroud is probably a son of Peter Stroud (Sr) and Naomi ---, but that is not proven. Peter Sr did live a Will, but it was lost with so many other Burke County records during the Civil War. David Stroud was neighbors with Peter Sr and the other Strouds, and it seems very likely that they were father and son, but Ive seen no hard evidence that they were, but circumstantial evidence supports it and there seems no other option.
In the late 1780's, David Stroud moved with his parents from Orange County to Burke County and settled in the Muddy Creek region (now McDowell County).
David was apparently still home with his parents for the 1790 census (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90) in Burke County.
David seems to still be home with his parents in 1800 (age 16-25, born ca 1774/84).
Sometime between 1800 and ca 1805, David Stroud married someone in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC. I have not found a record of his wife's name, but according to the various census records she was born ca 1765/75, so she was a little bit older than David. However, there is some conflict among her various census entries. In 1810 she was age 26-44, or born ca 1765/84, and in 1820 she was 45 and up, or born before 1775. These two work out to an approximate birth of ca 1765/75. However, in 1830 she was 40-49, or born ca 1780/90. This may indicate that one of the three entries is in error, or that in 1830 he had a different wife. However, I think the 1820 census entry is in error, so we can probably discard that one as being inaccurate and conclude that Mrs. Stroud was born ca 1780/84.
David Stroud was listed on the 1805 tax list in Burke County in Captain Armstrong's Company.
David Stroud was in Burke County for the 1810 census. He was listed between Elijah Mashburn and Francis Winchester (or Manchester). His father Peter Stroud Sr was listed not too far away on the previous page.

David Stroud was listed as a Soldier in the War of 1812 from Burke County in the 8th Regiment, 14th Company.
David Stroud was not listed on the 1815 tax list for Burke County, though his father Peter Sr was, and his brothers Peter Jr and William were listed. This may be because David had already moved to neighboring Buncombe County by this time.
David Stroud did move to Buncombe County in the 1810-1820 time-frame, probably before 1815. He apparently lived on or near Bald Mountain Creek. This was in the northern section of Buncombe County that later became Yancey County (in 1833). I don't know what drew David to that area. I don't know of any Stroud family connections there. Perhaps his wife had family in that area.
David Stroud was listed on the 1820 census in Buncombe County. He was listed between William Rice and Sarah Chandler. His other neighbors were all Sheltons, Nortons, Bowmans, Stantons and other well known Madison County families. Bald Mountain Creek is entirely in present Yancey County, but the head waters are right on the Madison County border, so David must have been real close to the border (though there was no border there back then).

David Stroud was named in a deed dated 19 Nov 1828 in Yancey County (obviously not filed until after 1833 since Yancey was not formed until then). The deed was from John G. Blount to James Tompkins, and referred to a 100 acre tract of land on Bald Mountain Creek adjoining David Stroud. Witnessed by Thomas Gardner. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 337).
The above deed shows that David Stroud already owned land in Buncombe (later Yancey) County by 1828. I have not checked the Buncombe County deed records to see when and how he acquired this land.
David Stroud was listed on the 1830 census in Buncombe County. He was next door to Ezekiel Chandler, and just as in 1820 was the only Stroud listed in Buncombe County.

D. Stroud was listed as a voter in the 1835 Congressional Elections. This is probably David Stroud, but he was listed in Burke County in Neals Precinct (where most of the other Strouds were also listed). If this is David, then he must have moved back to Burke by 1835, or else just voted there.
In the 1830's David Stroud moved to Dekalb County, Tennessee. This is in the central part of the state, just east of Nashville. I don't know what drew him out there. Dekalb was not formed until 1837 (effective 1838), so if he arrived before then, he might be found in one of the parent counties of Cannon, Warren or White. There was a large population of Strouds in Warren County, consisting of 1st cousins and more distant relations to David Stroud. Most (or all) of these were children and grandchildren of David's uncle William Stroud of Orange Co, NC. I don't know how close to them he lived, for David was the only one in the new Dekalb County.
Mrs. Stroud died sometime in the 1830's, though I can't say whether in North Carolina or Tennessee.
David Stroud married Sarah (---) sometime before 1840. Another researcher has told me that she was a Taylor, but I don't know what the proof of that is yet. She was born ca 1795/96 in Georgia (both facts per 1850 census). She may have been a widow of a Mr. Taylor instead. I'll have to look into this some more.
David Stroud was listed on the 1840 census in Dekalb County, Tennessee. He was the only Stroud there, and was listed between Henry Frazure (Frazier?) and Friley Martin. There were three young children with the family in 1840, these might be Sarah's children by a previous marriage.

David was listed on the 1850 census in Dekalb County. His was the only Stroud family listed there that year.

Apparently both David and wife Sarah died before 11 Jan 1859, for on that date Administration was granted to Barzella Taylor for the estate of David and Sarah Stroud decd. (Dekalb Co, TN Settlement Book 1854-1865 pg 265, shared by Mildred Deyo)
David and his first wife had several children together according to the various census records. It does not seem that David and his second wife Sarah had any children though she had some by a previous marriage to a Mr. Taylor. Unfortunately, none of David's children are proven, though I have identified a couple of probable children, but they are far from proven.
I strongly believe this is James Stroud (c1805) also known as "Little Jim", who married cousin Naomi Stroud in Burke County in the mid 1830's, and then moved to Roane Co, TN.
I have no direct evidence linking James to David, except that David had an apparent son that age who is otherwise unaccounted for. Circumstantially he fits perfectly. David's son was age compatible with James, and David's son left home in the 1830's, as did James. There is no other male Stroud family in old Burke County who had an unaccounted for male this age, so David is really the only suspect.
James married Naomi Stroud (c1810), daughter of James' first cousin Ecclesiastes ("Echolds") Stroud (c1785).
See their page for additional information.
I have no suspects as to who this might have been. If she married in the 1810-20 timeframe, then it probably occurred in Buncombe County, and unfortunately all the early marriages for Buncombe are lost.
There is a marriage in Burke dated 20 Oct 1817 between John R. Porter and Sarah Stroud. This certainly could be David's daughter, but so far I've found no additional data on this couple, so I can't determine if she was the right age to be David's daughter.
I don't know who this daughter was. If she married in the 1830's, then she may have married in either Buncombe (records lost), Burke or perhaps in Dekalb Co, TN. No female Stroud marriages are recorded in Burke in the 1830's.
I don't know who this daughter was. If she married in the 1820's, then she may have married in either Buncombe (records lost), or Burke County. There is a marriage bond in Burke dated 12 Dec 1822 between Edward Jones and Elizabeth Stroud. They are otherwise unidentified. I have no additional data on Elizabeth, so I don't know if she could be David's daughter or not.
I don't know who this daughter was. If she married in the 1830's, then she may have married in either Buncombe (records lost), or Burke County or possibly in Dekalb Co, TN.

This could be Elizabeth Ann Stroud (1817) who married Manson Grist ca 1830-36 and later lived in Rabun Co, GA. She fits age-wise, and was associated with some of the other Strouds, but the only problem is that she was born in Tennessee. Of course it is possible that David moved to Tennessee briefly.
I think it is much more likely that this is Tempey Stroud (c1818) who married Daniel Warren in 1834. He died in 1835, and she soon married my Uncle Jacob Stewart (c1822) in Union Co, GA in 1846.
I can not prove that Tempey was David's daughter, but here are the facts. She claimed in a Civil War Pension application that she was a Stroud, and that she was born and raised in Buncombe County. Of course we know that David Stroud was the only Stroud in Buncombe County during those years so that makes him the prime suspect. Further (and to complicate matters), Tempey's birth place is listed as Rutherford County on the 1860 census. I would accept her version in the pension record over the census, though it makes you wonder who gave the census taker that information.
Tempey and Jacob Stewart lived in Union Co, GA in 1850 and in Cherokee Co, NC in 1860. They later moved to McMinn Co, TN where Tempey died in 1915.
I have no direct proof that Tempey is David's daughter, but I think the circumstantial evidence is quite compelling.
This is probably Ezekiel Taylor (c1829) who was listed with David Stroud in 1850 as Ezekiel T. " which makes it appear he was Ezekiel T. Stroud, but I think that he was a Taylor and not a Stroud.
I once thought that Rebecca Stroud (c1831) wife of Peter Garrett was David Stroud's child, but I think the evidence does not support including her in this family, but I could be wrong about that. Rebecca was born in North Carolina ca 1831, and she does fit with this unknown child with David in 1840. Rebecca married Peter Garrett (who would be her first cousin) by 1848 and then moved to Pulaski Co, MO, later returning to north Georgia. It is possible that Peter Garrett married Rebecca in Missouri as their was a William Stroud (c1793) family there already and they were also from North Carolina.
So, for now, I don't know who this daughter of David Stroud was, whether it was Rebecca or someone else.
