I (Marty Grant) am a 6th Great Grandson of Peter and Naomi (---) Stroud.
Peter Stroud was born circa 1737 or before. I base this on his first public record (as far as I've found) dated being in the year 1758. Assuming he was at least 21 then, that puts him born ca 1737 or before. The only flaw here is that the record in question was a deed of gift to Peter Stroud. A person did not have to be 21 to receive a deed of gift, he could have been 1 day old. However, I suspect this approximate birth date is close enough.
It seems very likely (but unproven) that Peter Stroud is a son of William Stroud and Margaret Rose. The 1758 deed of gift was from William Stroud to Peter Stroud. Though the original deed is lost, a deed of gift was almost always from a parent to a child.
I don't know where Peter Stroud was born, but if he was a son of William Stroud, then he was probably born in Brunswick County, Virginia, which is where William was living in 1741. It is possible that he was born in Prince George County, Virginia instead. I have no direct evidence favoring one over the other.
Peter's family moved from Brunswick Co, VA to Granville Co, NC in the 1740's. In the mid 1750's, Peter moved to Orange County, North Carolina as did several other Strouds, all seemingly related.
Peter Stroud was not listed on the 1755 tax list for Orange County, so either he wasn't there yet, or wasn't old enough to be taxed.
In Orange County, North Carolina Court session for June 1758, a deed of gift from William Stroud to Peter Stroud for 158 acres was acknowledged. The original Orange County deeds for this period were lost in an early Court House Fire. (Orange Co, NC Court Minutes Book 1 page 303).
According to some old research (I don't know who originated it), Peter Stroud was married twice, first to Naomi and second to Rebecca. I have records proving Rebecca, but no primary records showing his first wife was named "Naomi". However, this must have been based on some old family document or family tradition for the name "Naomi" did get used a lot among the Stroud family in later generations.
Peter Stroud married Naomi --- ca 1760 or thereabouts, presumably in Orange County. It is possible that they married earlier than that, and prior to the move to Orange County. If so, their marriage was probably in Granville County instead. I have found no documentary evidence regarding this wife. I don't have an approximate birth date for her, nor any clue as to her maiden name.
On 17 Jun 1761, Peter Stroud was mentioned in a survey for John King who had 640 acres surveyed on Robinsons Creek, waters of Haw River. Peter Stroud and Robert Marsh were the Chain Carriers. Often the Chain Carriers were closely related to the person who was getting the survey. If this is the case here, how is he related to John King and Robert Marsh? (From "Orange County Records, Vol. I Granville Proprietary Land Office: Abstracts of Loose Papers", page 45)
The above record establishes the general section of Orange County where Peter Stroud lived. Robinson Creek no longer exists with that name, so I can't identify it, but later records show that Peter Stroud lived right on the present Orange - Chatham County border line right around Terrell's Mountain.
Peter Stroud was listed on the 1779 tax list in Orange County.
On 4 Aug 1779 Peter Stroud entered (Entry # 791) 640 acres of land in Orange County. See the Grant dated 21 Sep 1785 for details. On the same date, William Stroud (his brother) entered land bordering Peter Stroud's entry.
On 21 Sep 1785, Peter Stroud received a State Land Grant (# 844) for 640 acres on Tyrels Creek (Terrells Creek) of Haw River bounded east and north and west by his own land. The land was entered 4 Aug 1779 (Entry # 791). (Recorded in Grant Book 59 page 40).
The above land Grant further defines where Peter Stroud lived in Orange County. Terrells Creek rises in South West Orange County and flows south to the Haw River. Only about 1/3 or its 6 mile length is in present Orange County, the rest is in Chatham County (formed in 1770 from Orange). So since only a small part of the creek is in Orange, that narrows down where the Peter Stroud home place was to a small location. I grew up 12 miles from this spot, but never had any idea that I had ancestors from so close by.
Sometime prior to 11 Dec 1789, Naomi (---) Stroud died, and Peter married Rebecca ---. She was born ca 1765/74, presumably in Orange County. Due to her age, I'd guess they married no earlier than ca 1780. I have no idea what her maiden name might be. "Jordan" is a possibility, as they named a child "Jordan Stroud" (though it is possible he was from the first marriage).
Sometime between 1785 and 11 Dec 1789, Peter Stroud and family moved west to North Muddy Creek in Burke (now McDowell) County, North Carolina. This is proven, for on that date, Peter and Rebecca Stroud of Burk County sold land to Peter Willis of Brunswick Co, VA, being 800 acres on Terrils Creek waters of Haw River. Peter signed, and Rebekah made her mark. Witnesses were Isham Thrift and Anderson Stroud. Both of these were nephews, son-in-law and son of his brother William Stroud. (Orange Co, NC Deed Book 4 page 299).
Upon arrival in Burke County we already have a problem with records, as this is burned records county. During the Civil War many of the early records were destroyed. We also have the problem of two adult men named "Peter Stroud". They were father and son (I believe) and they often used "Sr" and "Jr" to distinguish themselves, but that wasn't always the case, so in many instances, I'm not sure which Peter Stroud is being referred to in any particular record.
Peter Stroud was listed on the 1790 census in Burke County next to sons Jesse Stroud and Peter Stroud Jr.

Although he was already gone from there, Peter Stroud was mentioned in an Orange County deed dated 10 Dec 1792 where Benjamin Caldwell of Chatham County sold land to Titus Attwater also of Chatham. The land was described as being in Orange County, on Terrells Creek, bordering the Chatham County line, and bordering Peter Stroud on the west and north. This shows that Peter's land had been right on or near the county line. (Orange Co, NC Deed Book 10 page 174).
On 19 Dec 1792 Peter Stroud entered 100 acres (Entry # 230) on the South Fork of Muddy Creek adjoining the line of his tract bought of William Brandon. This entry was transferred to Jesse Stroud (Peter's son).
Peter Stroud Sr was listed on a 1793 Burke County Tax list in Captain John Carson's Company and taxed for 535 acres of land. Peter Jr and Jesse Stroud were also listed.
Peter Stroud was listed on the 1800 census in Burke County. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were.

On 24 Mar 1807, William Green deeded 60 acres to Peter Stroud. I don't know if this was Peter Sr or Jr. This was recorded in the Court Minutes by Thomas Green in July 1809. (From "Burke Co, NC Deeds Registered 1804-1813" by Kathy Gunter Sullivan, 1995)
On 21 Jul 1807, Benjamin Harris sold 60 acres to Peter Stroud. I don't know if this was Peter Sr or Jr. The deed was proven by Thomas Green in July 1809 Court. (From "Burke Co, NC Deeds Registered 1804-1813" by Kathy Gunter Sullivan, 1995)
On 12 Mar 1808, Peter Stroud Sr deeded 60 acres to Peter Stroud Jr. The original deed was lost, but the court minutes showing the recording of the deeds survived. It was proven in July 1809 Court by Thomas Green. (From "Burke Co, NC Deeds Registered 1804-1813" by Kathy Gunter Sullivan, 1995).
On 11 Jun 1809, Peter Stroud sold 40 acres to James Patton. It does not say whether this is Peter Sr or Jr. This deed was proven by Thomas Green in July 1809 Court. (From "Burke Co, NC Deeds Registered 1804-1813" by Kathy Gunter Sullivan, 1995)
On 3 Sep 1809, Peter Stroud Sr deeded 10 acres to Joseph Ruby. It was proven in court by Drury Mashburn. (From "Burke Co, NC Deeds Registered 1804-1813" by Kathy Gunter Sullivan, 1995).
Peter Stroud was listed on the 1810 census in Burke County. He was next door to his son Peter Stroud Jr.

In Burke County Court for January 1810, Peter Sr and Jr were both mentioned in regards to a road "Ordered by the court that the following persons be a Jury to View and alter the road if expedient from the corner of Peter Stroud Junr Field to the upper end of Peter Stroud Senr Plantation on the road from Rutherford to the mouth of Buck creak to wit, Thomas Green, William Green, William Green, Junr, John Mitchell, John Keller, Peter Stroud Jr, Peter Stroud Senr, James Patton, Joseph Richy, Mathew Mashburn, William Carson, Robert Hoodg [or possibly Moody or Woody], James Armstrong, Joseph Wilson, Thomas Morrison, James Hix, William Mashburn and report thereof." April 14, the jury reported that it had "met and found a road past Peter Strouds field."
Peter Stroude Sr was listed on the 1815 Burke County Tax list in Captain Hemphill's Company. He was listed on Muddy Creek and either had 6 Polls (Adult white males, and slaves), and 332 acres valued at $1000.
Peter Stroud was listed on the 1820 census in Burke County. He was listed between David Mashburn and Millington Potilla.

Peter Stroud made a Will, but unfortunately it was lost with most of the other early Burke County records. We know of its existence for it was mentioned in the Court Minutes as being recorded in July 1827 by Thomas Raburn "and wife" (presumably meaning Peter's wife, not Raburn's wife).
The above record means that Peter Stroud Sr was dead by July 1827.
Presumably, widow Rebecca was the one mentioned as "and wife" in 1827, so she survived Peter. She was considerably younger than him, so she may have lived many years more, but I've found no record of her beyond 1827. She was not listed on the 1830 or 1840 census, though if living, she may have been with a married son or daughter, though I've not found any entries that could be her.
Peter and Naomi and Rebecca had numerous children per the early census records. Unfortunately none of their children are proven. Peter left a Will, but it was lost with most of the other early Burke County records. I have assembled a list of children that I think belong to Peter. Some other researchers have listed one or two of these as children of Peter, but never with any proof offered as support. I'll attempt to justify this list of children. All are clearly connected with Peter Stroud, and I'm reasonably confident that this list is correct, but there are probably other children I don't know about. An old letter dated 1922 seems to show that Peter Sr was the father of Jesse, Peter Jr and William Stroud. The author (Ed Anderson) was a grandson of Jesse Stroud and he was addressing his letter to John G. Stroud, a grandson of William Stroud. At that generation, it seems the author would have had lots of personal Family Knowledge, so we can probably take him at his word regarding these relationships. Unfortunately he didn't mention anything about the rest of the family.
Unknown Son (1774/90) Jordan Stroud (1774/84)
Unknown Son (1774/84) David Stroud (c1777)
Unknown Son (1774/84) William Stroud (1775/84)
Unknown Daughter (1794/1800) Fanny Stroud (1794/1800)
Unknown Daughter (1804/10) Joyce Stroud (c1806)
Jesse Stroud was born ca 1760/70 in Orange Co, NC. He came to Burke County with Peter and was a neighbor of his on Muddy Creek. I have not seen any primary evidence proving that Jesse was a son of Peter, but there are several things that make it appear so. In an old 1922 letter from Ed Anderson to John G. Stroud, he (Anderson) stated that Jesse was a son of Peter. He offered no proof to back it up, but the way he said it made you think he knew it from personal family knowledge. Anderson was a grandson of Jesse, and the addressee (John G. Stroud) was a grandson of William Stroud (Jesse's brother). We can probably safely assume that Ed Anderson was personally acquainted with the structure of the early family. Anderson referred to "your grandfather William Stroud, you know was a brother to old Uncle Peter and so was our Jesse Stroud". Jesse Stroud did name a son "Peter", presumably after his father and / or his brother Peter.
Jesse Stroud later moved to Tennessee where he died 1834. See his own page for additional information.
Susannah Stroud was born ca 1763/64 (per 1850 census) in Orange County, North Carolina. I have seen no direct evidence that Susannah was a daughter of Peter Stroud Sr, but the circumstantial evidence seems strong. She married Matthew Mashburn. I was unaware of her until cousin Tom Camfield told me about her being a Stroud, and probably being a daughter of Peter Stroud Sr. He had no direct evidence of the connection either, but it seemed to fit. The Mashburns and Strouds were neighbors in Burke County and associated closely. Circumstantially, it seems extremely likely that Susannah is a daughter (or at least a niece) of Peter Stroud Sr.
Recently I was contacted by several descendants (all at once) of Keziah Stroud Green (wife of William Green) who informed me that their research showed primary evidence that Keziah was a Stroud (her husband filed for divorce and gave her maiden name, though the divorce was not granted) and that a Pension application by Keziah has an affidavit by her "sister Susannah Mashburn". These facts combined with the circumstantial evidence confirm that Susannah was indeed a Stroud, and it provides more circumstantial evidence that she was a child of Peter Stroud for in the affidavit she says she witnessed the 1781 marriage of her sister in Orange County, North Carolina, which is where Peter was living in 1781. Since they all moved to Burke at the same time and were neighbors there as well, it all just adds up. Unfortunately I have found no primary evidence showing Susannah (or Keziah) to be Peter Stroud's daughter, but I think the evidence is strong enough.
Susannah Stroud married Matthew Mashburn sometime shortly before 1790, either in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC or prior to their move from Orange County. I believe the Mashburn's also lived in Orange County. Matthew was born ca 1755/65 (per census analysis), presumably in North Carolina. I don't know who his parents were. I've seen some Mashburn research giving different parents for him, but I've seen so many conflicts that I don't know which is correct. I've done no research on it myself.
Matthew Mashburn was listed on the 1790 census in Burke County just two houses from Peter Stroud. The published version showed him as Washburn. David and Drury Mashburn were close by also probably closely related to Matthew.

On 19 Dec 1792 Matthew Mashburn entered 100 acres (Entry # 229) on a branch of Muddy Creek named Glade Creek.
Matthew was listed on the 1800 census in Burke County. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so I can't determine who his neighbors were, whether living near the other Strouds or Mashburns.

By the time of the 1820 census, there was another Matthew Mashburn in Burke County, though much younger than this one, there is a possibility that some records could be mixed up, but considering the lack of surviving Burke County records this isn't a problem.
Matthew Mashburn was listed on the 1820 census in Burke County. None of the Strouds or other Mashburns were listed nearby.

Matthew Mashburn made his Will on 26 Mar 1826. A copy of this Will has survived and was shared with me by Greg Mashburn.
Know all men by these presents that I Matthew Mashburn of the said State and county being in the use of my proper senses in full and sound & composed mind do will and direct that after my death my property to be disposed of in the following way and manner that is to say to my beloved wife Susana the full use and possession during her life of that part of the land that I shall hereafter describe and will to my son Raeburn Mashburn also one negro Boy named Arthur with all the Stock of horses cattle hogs and sheep also all the household furniture farming tools and other property I possess except that part of my land which falls to my son Thomas Mashburn as shall be hereafter described provided nevertheless that if the said Thomas Mashburn or Raburn Mashburn or my daughter Lois Mashburn when they come to age to lawfully to act for themselves shall demand it. S: MATTHEW (X) MASHBURN {SEAL}, Attest: Joseph Neal, James Hicks.
A true copy, Test J. Erwin, clerk;
The above Will proves Matthew's wife was Susannah and proves sons Raburn, Thomas and James Mashburn and daughter Lois Mashburn.
I don't know when Matthew died, but he did not appear on the 1830 census, so he must have died between 1826 and 1830. His estate record (the little part that survived) was dated 1836, but he was long dead by then.
Susanna was listed as head of household on the 1830 census. She was next door to Elisha Mashburn (1780/90) relationship unknown.

In Jul 1836, the Will of Matthew Mashburn for wife Susan was presented by Thomas Mashburn, Executor. It was proven by Joseph Neel one of the witnesses. I don't know why it took nearly 10 years to be presented in court.
Susannah was not listed on the 1840 census, but I'm fairly sure she was living with daughter Elizabeth Mashburn Harris in Buncombe County, for she did have a woman about Susannah's age with her in 1840 (age 60-69, born ca 1770/80, which is close, but not exactly right), and Susannah was definitely with them in 1850.
Susannah was listed on the 1850 census in Buncombe County with daughter Elizabeth and her family. Some Freelands and Davis' were also living there. The Davis' are probably Elizabeth's grandchildren, so therefore Susannah's great grandkids.

I have no data on Susannah after 1860.
The various census records show that Matthew and Susannah had numerous children. Only four were named in Matthew's Will (1826) and they were: James, Thomas, Rabun and Lois. One more (Elizabeth) is proven by Susannah residing with her in 1840 and 1850. The rest are unknown to me.
Keziah Stroud was born ca 1760/65 (per census analysis) in Orange County, North Carolina. I was unaware of Keziah until late March 2001 when I heard from Tom Green and Lawrence Maynard, and shortly afterwards I heard from Peggy Wiley. All of them were descendants of William Green and Keziah, and the work of Lawrence Maynard had uncovered proof that Keziah was a Stroud. The evidence shared is conclusive regarding three important facts: One- Keziah, wife of William Green was a Stroud (proven by his application for divorce); Two- They were married in 1781 in Orange Co, NC; Three - Keziah Stroud Green was a sister to Susannah Stroud Mashburn.
We already had established that Susannah was a likely daughter of Peter Stroud Sr, so now we add Keziah to the list. The fact that she was a Stroud, and born ca 1760/65, and was in Orange Co, NC in 1781 and in Burke Co, NC afterwards, all links her to Peter Stroud. There is no absolute proof that Peter Stroud is her father, but it seems to be the only possibility.
According to shared research, a Revolutionary War Pension Application was filed by Keziah on behalf of William Green's Service. I have not seen the record, but I believe it proves several things. First that she married William Green on 9 Jan 1781 in Orange County, North Carolina, that he was born 6 Feb 1762 in Prince Edward Co, VA (census analysis supports this date, giving ca 1760/65 as his approximate birth date). Secondly, the Pension application shows that Susannah Stroud Mashburn was her sister.
William Green and Keziah and family apparently moved to Burke County with the Strouds in the late 1780's. I don't know if they lived on Muddy Creek with the Strouds, but probably did, or at least somewhere close by.
William Green was listed on the 1790 census in Burke County, North Carolina in the 4th Company. Elijah Green was next door, perhaps a brother to William Green? He was not listed near the Strouds (all in the 1st Company), but some of his other neighbors were names known to live near the Strouds, so they probably were not too far distant. Some of the nearby names were those known to live on the Second Broad River, which is just south of Muddy Creek.

William Green was listed on the 1800 census in Burke. This census was alphabetical, so I can't determine who his neighbors were.

They were still in Burke for the 1810 census. They were not near any of the Strouds, but Elijah Green was on the same page (the same one next to him back in 1790, I think). Joseph Tanner (my ancestor) was a few houses away. He lived on Second Broad River, so that seems to put the Greens in the same general area. This was only a mile or so from the Strouds.

I have not been able to locate William Green on the 1820 census. He was not in Burke County, nor in neighboring Haywood County (where we know he later moved). There was a William listed in Burke this year, but too young to be this same William. There was also a William Green in Haywood in 1820, but also too young. The one in Haywood was probably the same one there back in 1810. I don't know where William and Keziah Green were in 1820. They may have been missed by the census taker or perhaps I've overlooked them somewhere. They could have been in the process of moving in the year 1820, and were missed by the census taker.
William Green was listed on the 1830 census in Haywood County. They were listed next to Jacob Owens and Anderson Green (a son?).

For some reason, William Green filed for divorce from Keziah in 1833 in Haywood County. The divorce was either denied, or he withdrew the request. I don't have the details yet.
I did not find William Green on the 1840 census. According to shared research, he died on 2 Mar 1837 in Haywood County.
Keziah apparently outlived her husband, for she filed a Widows Pension application at some point, but I don't have the date for it. She was not listed on the 1840 census in Haywood County or elsewhere as far as I've found. If still living then, she was probably living with one of her kids.
Keziah Stroud Green was apparently still alive in 1849, but I don't know where she was living at that point.
Peter Stroud was born ca 1765/70 in Orange Co, NC. He came to Burke County with Peter and was a neighbor of his on Muddy Creek. I have not seen any primary evidence proving that Peter Jr was a son of Peter Sr, but there are several things that make it appear so. In an old 1922 letter from Ed Anderson to John G. Stroud, he (Anderson) stated that Peter Jr was a son of Peter. He offered no proof to back it up, but the way he said it made you think he knew it from personal family knowledge. Anderson referred to "your grandfather William Stroud, you know was a brother to old Uncle Peter and so was our Jesse Stroud".
Peter Sr deeded some land to Peter Jr in 1808.
Peter Stroud Jr died in 1834. See his own page for additional information.
Unknown Son (1774/90). Peter Stroud had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1790 (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90), but gone from his household by 1800, so probably married or dead by then.
This is probably Jordan Stroud who appeared on the 1800 census in Burke County as an unmarried head of household. He was born ca 1774/84 according to his age on that census. Unfortunately the 1800 census was alphabetical, so I can't determine if he was living close to the other Strouds (though I'm sure he was). I have no direct evidence that Jordan Stroud was a son of Peter Stroud, but it seems highly likely. If he isn't Peter's son, then he is probably Jesse Stroud's oldest son (but I think Peter is the more likely choice).
1800 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)
1800 Burke Co, NC pg 791 Jorden Stroud 00100-00000-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1774-1784) Jordan STROUD (1774/84) s/o Peter Sr
Jordan Stroud was listed on the 1805 Burke County Tax list in Captain Armstrong's Company, as was his father Peter Sr, and his brothers Peter Jr, David and William Stroud.
On 2 Mar 1808, Jordan Stroud deeded 100 acres to John Keller in Burke County. The original deed did not survive, but it was recorded in October 1811 Burke County Court by William Mendinghall, one of the witnesses. (From "Burke Co, NC Deeds Registered 1804-1813" by Kathy Gunter Sullivan, 1995).
The above deed must have been due to Jordan Stroud's move to Tennessee. He was probably disposing of his property before the move. He moved to Dickson County, Tennessee, or at least that is where he was by 1813. Dickson County is in north western Tennessee, just west of Nashville. Jordan seems to have accompanied his brother Jesse Stroud who also moved there around the same time, or at least Jesse's son Thomas and Jesse (Jr) were there, but perhaps not Jesse Sr.
Jordan Stroud was not listed on the 1810 census. He was probably already in Tennessee by then, and unfortunately, the 1810 census is lost for Tennessee.
Another researcher (Mildred Deyo, I think) found a deed dated 2 Mar 1813 in Dickson County between Jourdan Stroud and Benjamin Gilbert for land on Turnbull Creek. Witnesses were William Robinson and Peter Gilbert. I don't have a deed book reference for this. Jordan's brother Jesse also had land on Turnbull Creek.
The 1820 census survived for Dickson County, but Jordan Stroud was not listed, though Jesse Stroud and Thomas Stroud (Jesse's sons) were listed.
Unfortunately, the 1813 deed is the last record I have for Jordan Stroud. I have found nothing (so far) to indicate whether he married and had a family or not.
Unknown Son (1774/90). Peter Stroud had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1790 (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90), but gone from his household by 1800, so probably married or dead by then.
I have not identified any likely suspects as to who this son might have been.
Unknown Son (1774/84). Peter Stroud had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1790 (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90), and still home in 1800 (age 16-25, born ca 1774/84), but gone from his household by 1810, so probably married or dead by then.
This is probably David Stroud (c1777) who was a neighbor of Peter and the other Strouds, though he later moved to Buncombe County, and then finally to Dekalb County, Tennessee. His (supposed) children were closely associated with the other descendants of Peter Stroud Sr. See his own page for additional information.
Unknown Son (1774/84). Peter Stroud had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1790 (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90), and still home in 1800 (age 16-25, born ca 1774/84), but gone from his household by 1810, so probably married or dead by then.
This is probably William Stroud (c1775/84) who was a neighbor of Peter and the other Strouds. His children were closely associated with the other descendants of Peter Stroud Sr. See his own page for additional information.
Unknown Son (1784/90). Peter Stroud had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1790 (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90), and still home in 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90), but gone from his household by 1810, so probably married or dead by then.
I have no suspects for this unknown son.
Unknown Daughter (1784/90). Peter Stroud had an apparent daughter this age. She was not home in 1790, so probably not born yet when the census taker came around. She was home in 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90), but gone from his household by 1810, so probably married or dead by then. To account for her apparent age in 1800, but not being home in 1790, I suspect she was born ca 1790.
I have no suspects for this unknown daughter.
Unknown Daughter (1794/1800). Peter Stroud had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800), and still home in 1810 (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800), and still home in 1820 (age 16-25, born ca 1794/1804).
This is probably Fanny Stroud (1790/1800) who married John Morris in 1822. I have no direct evidence that she is Peter's daughter, but it seems highly likely, as there are no other choices.
Fanny Stroud was born ca 1790/1800 (per census records) or more specifically born ca 1794/1800 if she is the daughter of Peter who was with him in 1800, 1810 and 1820. (Note: "Fanny" is a common nickname for "Frances").
On 22 Jul 1822, John Morris obtained a marriage bond in Burke County to marry Fanny Stroud. William Stroud (her brother) was the bondsman. John Morris was born ca 1785/86 in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC, son of William Morris (1750).
John Morris was listed on the 1830, 1840 census in Burke County, and in 1850 in McDowell County. He made his Will in 1866.
Fanny Stroud died in 1840-1850 time-frame in McDowell County.
See their own page for additional information.
Unknown Daughter (1800/10). Peter Stroud had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), but gone from his household by 1820, so probably married or dead by then.
I have no suspects for this unknown daughter.
Unknown Daughter (1800/10). Peter Stroud had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), but gone from his household by 1820, so probably married or dead by then.
I have no suspects for this unknown daughter.
Unknown Daughter (1804/10). Peter Stroud had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), and home in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10).
I believe this is probably Joyce Stroud born ca 1806. I have no direct proof that she is Peter's daughter, but she fits, though it is certainly possible that she belongs to one of the other Strouds who had unknown daughters in this age group, for example Echolds Stroud had an unknown daughter that age. Since he left the area in 1838, I have to consider him a secondary suspect for Joyce's father.
On 12 Feb 1827, John Ingle obtained a marriage bond in Burke County to marry Joice Stroud. Thomas Andrew and James Long were bondsmen. John Ingle was born ca 1799/1800 in North Carolina. I don't know who his parents were. I don't think his family was from Burke County originally.
I was unable to locate the family on the 1830 census. There were no Ingles in Burke County that year, though several were in neighboring Buncombe County, but no "John Ingle".
They were in Burke for the 1840 census. They were just a few houses from brother William Stroud. John's family was the only "Ingle" family in Burke that year.

In 1842 McDowell County was formed from the section of Burke where the Strouds and Ingles resided.
They were listed on the 1850 census in McDowell County. They were still the only Ingle family in the county. They were not listed near any of the Strouds.
