[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grand nephew of William Stroud.
William Stroud was born ca 1775/84 per census analysis. In 1790 he was "under 16" and still home with his parents (born ca 1774/90). In 1800 he was age 16-25 and still with parents (born ca 1774/84). In 1810 he was age 26-44, or born ca 1765/84. In 1820 he was 26-44 (born ca 1775/94). Combine all of these and you get ca 1775/84. He died before the 1830 census, so I couldn't narrow it down any further.
William Stroud was probably born in Orange County, North Carolina, assuming he was the son of Peter Stroud Sr as most researchers believe. They lived in southern Orange County along the Chatham County border.
William Stroud is probably a son of Peter Stroud (Sr) and Rebecca ---, (or of Peter's first wife Naomi) but that is not proven. Peter Sr did live a Will, but it was lost with so many other Burke County records during the Civil War. William Stroud was neighbors with Peter Sr and the other Strouds, and it seems very likely that they were father and son, but Ive seen no hard evidence that they were, but circumstantial evidence supports it and there seems no other option. Also, a 1922 letter from Ed Anderson (Grandson of Jesse Stroud) to John G. Stroud (grandson of William Stroud) stated that their grandfathers (Jesse and William) were brothers to Peter Stroud Jr and that all were sons of Peter Stroud Sr. We can only assume that Ed Anderson had personal family knowledge since he was not very far removed from that generation.
In the late 1780's, William Stroud moved with his parents from Orange County to Burke County and settled in the Muddy Creek region (now McDowell County).
William was apparently still home with his parents for the 1790 census (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90) in Burke County.
William seems to still be home with his parents in 1800 (age 16-25, born ca 1774/84).
Sometime between 1800 and ca 1805, William Stroud married Delilah --- in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC. She was born ca 1788/89 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina. I don't know what her maiden name is, but some researchers have suggested it was "Hicks", for they did name a son "John Hicks Stroud", and they were neighbors to the Hicks family. I have no idea if she was a Hicks though, but it is certainly possible.
William Stroud was listed on the 1805 tax list in Burke County in Captain Armstrong's Company.
William Stroud was not found in Burke County for the 1810 census. However, a "William Strowd" was listed in Surry County (several miles north east) and, though I can't prove it, I believe this is the same William Stroud. I can't explain why he moved to Surry County, but his 1810 census enumerations are a good match for our William, and to my knowledge, there is no other claim on this Surry County William. Keep in mind that this may not be our William at all, but here is the listing anyway:

If that was the same William in Surry, then he was back in Burke by 1815.
William Stroude was listed on the 1815 tax list for Burke County in Captain Hemphill's Company. He was listed with 1 Poll (himself), and 170 acres, valued at $225. His father Peter Sr was also listed as was his brother Peter Stroud Jr.
William Stroud was listed on the 1820 census in Burke County. Brother Peter Stroud Jr was just a few houses away. He was listed as William Sr because his nephew William Stroud (c1800) was now of age, and they had to distinguish themselves.

On 22 Jul 1822, William Stroud signed as bondsman for the marriage bond of his sister Fanny Stroud to marry John Morris in Burke County.
Sometime between July 22, 1822 and July of 1823, William Stroud died. A Court record dated July 1823 shows that William Stroud was dead, and that his spouse was Delia, and that Peter Stroud was administrator. I don't know if this was his father or brother. Delilah ("Delia") was appointed guardian of the minor orphans of William Stroud deceased "to wit: Lois, Rebecca, James, Peter, Merritt, William, Jesse, Hicks and Nancy Stroud."
The above record proves all (or most of) the children of William Stroud. An "orphan" was anyone under 21 years of age who's father had died. It didn't matter that the mother was still living, by law they were considered "infants" and "orphans". There was an apparent older son born ca 1802/04 per the census who was not named here. It is possible that child had died, or that he was already 21 or up by the time of this record.
Delilah Stroud was listed on the 1830 census in Burke County. She was next door to Gardner Stearns, who might be related somehow.

In 1842, McDowell County was formed from part of Burke County, including the Muddy Creek area where the Strouds lived.
Delilah was listed on the 1850 census in McDowell County just a few houses from Margaret Curtis Stroud (widow of Peter Stroud Jr), her sister-in-law.

I don't know the source for this date, but Delilah Stroud died on 7 Mar 1852 in McDowell County.
William and Delilah had nine children as proven by the Guardian record dated 1823. Census records seem to reveal a few more who may have died by then, or already been over 21 so not listed. There were some "extra" people with Delilah in 1830 and 1840 who couldn't be her children, but could be grandkids or nieces and nephews. I'm including them here just to make note of them.

Lois Stroud was named in the Jul 1823 Guardianship record as a minor orphan of William Stroud, deceased.
On 9 Jan 1824, Henry Reel obtained a marriage bond in Burke County to marry Louis Stroud. E. Morgan was bondsman. Henry Reel was born ca 1804/05 in North Carolina. I don't know who his parents were.
They were listed on the 1830 census in Burke County.

They were listed on the 1850 census in McDowell County. The were next door to John Morris, widower of Fanny Stroud, Lois' Aunt.

Henry Reel died sometime between 1850 and 1860 in McDowell County.
Lois and children were listed on the 1860 census in McDowell, still next door to John Morris. Stephen Hensley was living with them. He was a brother to Lois' son-in-law John Hensley, both sons of James A. Hensley (1801) of Rutherford County.

Lois was still in McDowell for the 1870 census in Sugar Hill Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
I didn't find Lois on the 1880 census, so she may have died by then.
Rebecca Stroud was named in the Jul 1823 Guardianship record as a minor orphan of William Stroud, deceased.
On 11 Dec 1824, John McCasling (McCaslin) obtained a marriage bond in Burke County to marry Becky Stroud. William Bright was the bondsman. John was born ca 1801/02 (per 1860 census), in North Carolina. I don't know who his parents are.
They are listed on the 1830 census in Burke County. They were listed between Curtis Sanders and Matthew Mashburn (not the one who married Susannah Stroud). None of the Strouds were nearby.

The 1830 census record was the last I had on John and Rebecca until I was contacted by cousin Don W. Allen who informed me that this family moved to Van Buren County, Arkansas (as did other Strouds later on).
Don stated that he was unable to locate them on the 1840 census, and I have met with the same results. They did not seem to be in Burke County still then, nor in Arkansas. I manually searched through every page of the Van Buren census, and didn't find them. Perhaps they were "en-route" during the census year, and were missed by the census taker. Since Rebecca's Stroud siblings didn't go to Van Buren until 1849, it seems reasonable that the McCaslins didn't go until around then either.
Don also told me that he was unable to find them in 1850. There was one in Indiana but it wasn't him, and there was one on the index in Louisiana, but I was unable to find him on the actual census. I read all the pages in Van Buren Co, AR near the Strouds, but found no trace of the McCaslins.
Don tells me that they were listed there in 1860. I looked them up and found them there in Liberty Township. They had no children at home with them by this time.

They were still there in 1870. They were living with Wiley Bass (c1847 NC) and Celia Bass (c1847 IL). Is Celia their daughter? If so, then that may explain where the family was in 1850, since she was born in Illinois in 1847. There was also a widow Caroline Gosnell (c1830 NC) living with them. Another daughter perhaps?

I was unable to locate them on the 1880 census. They may have both died before then.
James Stroud was named in the Jul 1823 Guardianship record as a minor orphan of William Stroud, deceased.
He was apparently home with his widowed mother in 1830 (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10).
James married Ann Morgan in 1840 in Rutherford County. They were still in Burke for the 1840 census, but by 1849 had moved to Van Buren County, Arkansas and were listed there through the 1880 census.
See their own page for additional information.
Peter Stroud was named in the Jul 1823 Guardianship record as a minor orphan of William Stroud, deceased.
He was apparently home with his widowed mother in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15).
He was called "Little Peter" to distinguish him from his older cousin "Big" Peter Stroud (1807).
Peter married Mary Matilda Humphries before 1838 in Burke County. They lived in Burke, later McDowell for a time, then moved to Gordon County, Georgia in the 1850's.
See their own page for additional information.
He was apparently home with his parents in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20).
Merritt Stroud was named in the Jul 1823 Guardianship record as a minor orphan of William Stroud, deceased.
He was apparently home with his widowed mother in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15).
Merritt was not listed on the 1835 voter list in Burke County as were so many of the other male Strouds (who were over 21 at that time). This is probably due to the fact that he had already moved to Monroe County, Tennessee by then. I don't know what drew him over there.
Merit Stroud was listed on the 1836 Tax list in Monroe County, Tennessee. He had no land, but was taxed for one poll (himself).
Merritt Stroud was probably married by this time (ca 1836), but I have not found any record of his wife. She apparently died before 1840, for his 1840 census entry showed no females at all, but his household had 2 males under age 5 (born ca 1835/40), suggesting he had married by ca 1835 or shortly after that.
By 1840, Merritt had moved to neighboring Polk County, Tennessee and was listed on the 1840 census there. There were quite a number of Green families listed nearby, perhaps those are his Green cousins.

On 24 Dec 1840, Merritt obtained a marriage bond in neighboring McMinn County, Tennessee to marry Rebecca Proffitt. I have not found any additional data on her yet.
Apparently, they moved back to McDowell County, for on 26 Aug 1844, Merritt Stroud entered 100 acres of land (Entry # 157) on Muddy Creek adjoining the heirs of William Stroud, deceased.
Merritt was noticeably absent from an 1847 deed where most of his siblings sold a portion of their inheritance. This could mean he was dead or was out of state again.
I have found no record of Merritt B. Stroud after his 1844 land entry in McDowell County. He may have died in the 1844-1850 time-frame, in McDowell Co, NC or moved somewhere else and died, but before 1850. I did not find Rebecca on the 1850 census either.
According to the 1840 census, Merritt had two sons, both born ca 1835/40. I believe one of those is John Oliver Stroud (c1835) who was with Enoch C. Stroud in 1850 in McDowell Co, NC, and later moved to Towns Co, GA. John Oliver was born in Tennessee, and he did name his eldest son "Merritt B. Stroud", so it does seem likely that he is Merritt's son. I have not identified the other son.
William Stroud was named in the Jul 1823 Guardianship record as a minor orphan of William Stroud, deceased.
He was apparently home with his widowed mother in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15).
"W. M. Stroud" was one of the purchasers at the estate sale of his Uncle Peter Stroud (1765/70) on 27 Nov 1834.
William was listed on the 1840 census in Burke County. He was living alone, so not yet married. He was next door to brother Peter E. Stroud and next to Gardner Stearns who was either related to the Strouds or a close friend for his name appeared on numerous Stroud records.

On 24 Mar 1845, William Stroud entered 50 acres (Entry # 236) on North Muddy Creek adjoining William Stroud, deceased (his father).
On 4 Oct 1847 William and several siblings deeded some of their inheritance to Edward H. Grant: James Stroud, Peter Stroud, William Stroud, Jesse Stroud, Hicks Stroud and Nancy Stroud, heirs of William Stroud, deceased. Witnesses were Samuel Deal and S. B. Erwin. (McDowell Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 472).
The above deed (4 Oct 1847) is the last record I've found for William M. Stroud. He may have died before 1850, or moved away somewhere. I have not yet found any likely candidates, though there were lots of William Strouds listed in 1850 in other states. None of them (that I found) were of the proper age and born in North Carolina.
I think he did die, because there is an Estate record dated 1850 in McDowell County for a "William Stroud" and another one dated 1853, both have John H. Stroud (his brother) as Administrator. I have not seen these estates (only the index), but I'd wager this was William M. Stroud.
Jesse Stroud was named in the Jul 1823 Guardianship record as a minor orphan of William Stroud, deceased.
He was apparently home with his widowed mother in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20) and still apparently home with her in 1840 (age 20-29, born ca 1810/20).
Jesse Stroud married Mary Wiggins in 1841 in Monroe Co, TN (but was back in McDowell right after that). They moved to Van Buren County, Arkansas ca 1849.
See their own page for additional information.
Hicks Stroud was named in the Jul 1823 Guardianship record as a minor orphan of William Stroud, deceased.
He was apparently home with his widowed mother in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20). He was still home in 1840 (age 20-29, born ca 1810/20).
On 21 Aug 1845 Hicks Stroud entered 50 acres of land (Entry # 292) on North Muddy Creek adjoining Zachariah Hawkins.
On 4 Oct 1847 Hicks and several siblings deeded some of their inheritance to Edward H. Grant: James Stroud, Peter Stroud, William Stroud, Jesse Stroud, Hicks Stroud and Nancy Stroud, heirs of William Stroud, deceased. Witnesses were Samuel Deal and S. B. Erwin. (McDowell Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 472).
On 9 Nov 1848, John H. Stroud was bondsman for the McDowell County marriage bond of James M. Hicks and Jane Erwin.

Around 1849, the Wests along with several of Nancy's siblings moved west to Van Buren County, Arkansas.
They were listed on the 1850 census in Van Buren County in fairly close proximity to Nancy's brothers Jesse and James.

Nancy was listed on the 1880 census with her daughter Rebecca and her husband. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
I have no idea who she might have been.
I have a strong suspicion that this is Matthew Stroud (c1829 NC) who was a neighbor of the other members of this family in Van Buren Co, AR in 1850 and 1860. His relationship to the William and Delilah family is unknown, but I can think of three possibilities:
One: He is a grandson of William and Delilah, and therefore a nephew to Jesse, James, etc. This would mean that his father was a son of William and Delilah. The only flaw with this theory is that William had no identified son old enough or who was married by 1829.
Two: He is a son of Delilah, born well after the death of her husband, and therefore "out of wedlock". I have no proof to back this up, but it is certainly a possibility.
Three: He is a cousin to children of William and Delilah, but who was close enough that he followed them to Arkansas.
