[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grand Nephew of William A. Stroud.

William A. Stroud was born ca 1800 (per census analysis) in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC. His 1830 census entry gave his age as 20-29 (born ca 1800/10) and his 1840 entry gave his age as 40-49 (born ca 1790/1800). The only way to reconcile the two is if he was born ca 1800. This seems to be the case.

At least one researcher (from years ago) listed William's name as "William Austin Stroud", but I have found no record to confirm his middle name or even his middle initial. The few records I have for him simply list him as "William" and sometimes as William "Jr" to distinguish him from his Uncle William Stroud (1775/84).

I have found no direct evidence, but I'm reasonably sure that William A. Stroud is a son of Peter Stroud and Margaret Curtis. My reasoning behind this is that William was closely associated with Peter's other children, and he was mentioned in an old 1838 family letter as being involved in the land swapping among the heirs of Peter Stroud. This doesn't prove he was an heir, but strongly suggests it.

Further proof about William probably being a son of Peter and Margaret is that his widow and one son lived with Peter G. Stroud (1807) in 1850 in Union Co, GA. Peter is also a son of Peter and Margaret.

William was apparently home with his parents in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800) and still home in 1810 (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800), and gone by 1820.

William Stroud married Priscilla --- before ca 1817 in Burke County, North Carolina. This is highly speculative on my part, for I'm not entirely sure that Priscilla was his wife. He did marry someone in that time-frame, and an apparent widow Priscilla and many otherwise unattached Stroud children appeared in 1850 in close proximity to the other Strouds. I have concluded (based on circumstantial evidence) that Priscilla and those children all belonged to William. Like I said, it is all speculative, but I feel fairly good about it being correct, but it would be helpful if I could find some original document that helps to prove it. Priscilla was born ca 1799/1800 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina. I don't know what her maiden name is.

The first child I have for William Stroud was born 1817 in Tennessee. If she is indeed his child, then it would appear that the family moved to Tennessee temporarily around 1817, but were back in Burke by 1820.

William Stroud was listed on the 1820 census in Burke County. He was listed between Matthew Mashburn and Thomas Nelson, and just a few houses from brother-in-law William Garrett. He was listed as "Jr" because his Uncle William Stroud was still alive at this point.

They were listed on the 1830 census in Burke County. No other Strouds were nearby, but they still seemed to be in the same general area.

By 1834, William and family had returned to Tennessee again, based on the birth place of one of the (suspected) children.

The voter list for the 1835 Congressional elections has survived, and for Burke County, William was not listed, though most of the other adult Stroud males were. However, there is a William Stroud listed as a voter in Macon County, North Carolina that year. His brother Peter G. Stroud was also in Macon at that time, so it stands to reason that William had moved out there temporarily as well. He voted in Savannah Precinct, which is not where Peter voted (he was in Franklin Precinct). I don't know for sure if this voter was the same William Stroud or not, but if not, then I don't know who he was. If it is him, then he was no longer in Tennessee.

On 22 Apr 1836, William Stroud and James Stroud (brother) witnessed a deed from their brother Robert Stroud to Gardner Stearns. (McDowell Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 137).

William was listed in Burke County on the 1840 census. He seemed to be in the same area as before, so if he did move off to Tennessee by 1834 and then to Macon County, NC by 1835, he moved back to the same spot in Burke County by 1836.

In 1842, McDowell County was formed from the section of Burke County where the Strouds were living.

William Stroud died sometime between 1840 and 1850. The McDowell County Estates index showed a William Stroud estate dated 1850 and one dated 1853, both administered by John H. Stroud (son of William Stroud Sr), and I've always assumed that these were for his brother William M. Stroud and his father William Sr. I need to look at the actual estates and see if I can figure which William is being referred to.

It is possible that William had moved to Union or Rabun Counties, Georgia before his death, as that is where most of his family was found in 1850, though two sons were still in McDowell that year.

William's presumed widow Priscilla was living in Union County, Georgia with her brother-in-law Peter G. Stroud (1807), and her son William M. Stroud (1833) was there also.

I did not find Priscilla Stroud on the 1860 census. I found most of her known children in Rabun Co, GA and in McDowell Co, NC. She may have died before 1860 or remarried someone unknown.

Children

William and Priscilla (---) Stroud had several children per the 1820 through 1850 census records. Since only William M. Stroud (1833) was living with Priscilla in 1850, I consider him the only proven child, though I'm reasonably sure who some of their other children were, but solid proof is lacking.

Unknown Daughter (1815/20). William Stroud had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20) and still home in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20), but gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.

I have no direct proof, but I believe this is Naomi Stroud who married Thurman Briggs in 1832. She was born ca 1818/19 (per 1850 census). She lived in Rabun Co, GA in 1850 near the other Strouds there. Other than that, I have no evidence linking her to William.

On 18 Jul 1832, Thurman Briggs obtained a marriage bond in Burke County, North Carolina to marry Oma Stroud. George L. Mashburn was the bondsman. Thurman was born ca 1811/12 in North Carolina. I don't know who his parents were.

For some reason, they moved to Sullivan County, Tennessee by ca 1838 and were listed there on the 1840 census.

They were in Rabun County, Georgia by ca 1841. The birth places of all the children were left blank on the 1850 census, which in this particular census meant they were born in Georgia. This shows children born in Georgia back as far as ca 1838. This could be a mistake, or it could indicate the move to Tennessee was very brief. However, the 1860 census clarifies it somewhat, showing some children born in Tennessee.

They were listed on the 1850 census in Rabun County, Georgia. A widow Anna Briggs, age 80 was just a couple of pages away. Could she be Thurman's mother?

They were listed on the 1860 census in nearby Forsyth County, Georgia. For some reason the wife and the eldest daughters had their names reversed, so the wife appeared to be "Elizabeth" and the daughter "Nomer" (Naomi), when that was opposite of the truth.

I have no data on them after this.

Unknown Daughter (1820/25). William Stroud had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), but gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.

I don't know who this was. There was someone this same age living with Thurman and Naomi (Stroud) Briggs in 1840 in Sullivan Co, TN. Could it be Naomi's sister living with her? Could be, but there is no way to tell for sure.

There are no female Stroud marriage bonds for Burke County in the 1830's, so if this Miss Stroud married in that timeframe (or afterwards) it was not in Burke County, North Carolina.

Unknown Son (1825/30). William Stroud had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), but gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then. He actually seems too young to have married by 1840, but could be living with someone else at the time.

I have no suspects as to who this might have been.

Unknown Son (1825/30). William Stroud had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).

I have no strong suspects as to who this might have been. There is a P. A. Stroud age 20 listed on the 1850 census in Rabun County, Georgia, but I've always thought that was Peter A. Stroud (c1830) son of James A. Stroud, but I could be wrong about that. Just in case, here is that census entry. He was living with Jesse Carter and Lavina (Sams) Carter, who are my ancestors. They are the in-laws to Peter G. Stroud (1807) he having married one of their daughters.

I have nothing else on P. A. Stroud (assuming he is not Peter A. Stroud mentioned earlier).

Unknown Son (1825/30).William Stroud had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).

This is probably Enoch C. Stroud (c1827) who was living in McDowell Co, NC in 1850 with little brother John Oliver Stroud (c1834) living with him. Another researcher from years ago stated that "Enoch Calhoun Stroud" was a son of "William Austin Stroud", but I don't know what evidence they used to conclude that. However, I do think it is probably accurate. I keep mentioning this older "researcher", but not by name because I don't know who it was.

Enoch C. Stroud was born ca 1826/27 (per 1850 and 1860 census) in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC.

On 5 Apr 1845, Enoch Stroud entered (Entry # 242) 100 acres of land in McDowell County on North Muddy Creek adjoining William Stroud, deceased (his father, or his Uncle?), on the west side of said land.

On 20 Oct 1849, Enoch Stroud entered (Entry # 669) 50 acres of land on North Muddy Creek adjoining Thomas Wilson and "the Stroud lands".

Enoch C. Stroud married Rebecca Curtis sometime before 1850. She was a Curtis, and a daughter of Joshua Curtis and Mary Stroud according to previously mentioned unnamed researcher. I don't know what proof there is of this, but it is probably correct.

They are listed on the 1850 census in McDowell County. Enoch's little brother "Oliver" (John Oliver Stroud) was living with them.

Enoch C. Stroud died sometime between 1870 and 1880 in McDowell County.

Rebecca and children were listed on the 1880 census in McDowell in Marion Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

I have not looked for Rebecca on the 1900 census yet, but she was still living then. She died on 1 Oct 1904 in McDowell County.

William M. Stroud was born 16 Nov 1833 in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC. Special thanks to Jim Meggs and Dave Bright for data shared on this family.

William seems to be home with his parents in 1840 (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35), and was living with his mother Priscilla and uncle Peter G. Stroud in 1850.

On 17 Jun 1855, William Stroud obtained a marriage bond in Madison County, North Carolina to marry Mary A. Coates (Mary Elizabeth Coates). She was a daughter of Gabriel G. Coates and Margaret L. Burleson.

They remained a year or so in Madison County before returning to North Georgia where they were listed on the 1860 census (in Rabun County).

** Although I say they are listed in 1860 Rabun County, I can not find them at present, but I have a reference that they were there, but I'll have to find them again. They are not on the page and household number that I show in my notes, so I've got to search again.

They moved into neighboring Towns County, Georgia by 1870.

By 1880 they had moved west to Whitfield County, Georgia. They are listed on the 1880 census there in Varnells Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

At some point after this the family moved to Oklahoma.

Mary Elizabeth Coates Stroud died on 3 Apr 1911 in Swink, Choctaw Co, Oklahoma.

William M. Stroud died on 15 Jan 1923 at Ben Franklin, Delta Co, TX.

Unknown Son (1830/35). William Stroud had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1840 (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35).

I originally thought this was John Oliver Stroud (c1834), but now I'm inclined to think that Oliver is a son of Merritt B. Stroud (Oliver did name one of his sons "Merritt B. Stroud" after all!).

That means this son (1830/35) of William's is still unidentified.

Unknown Daughter (1830/35). William Stroud had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1840 (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35).

I have no clue who this daughter might have been. She was either married by 1850, or living with other relatives, but I've found no likely suspects.

Unknown Daughter (1835/40). William Stroud had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1840 (age "under 5" born ca 1835/40).

I have no clue who this daughter might have been. She was either married by 1850, or living with other relatives, but I've found no likely suspects.
