I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grand Nephew of Peter G. Stroud by blood and also a 4th Great Grand Nephew of Lucinda Carter by blood.
Peter Stroud was born 4 Aug 1807 (per tombstone) in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC. I've been told his full name was "Peter Grayson Stroud", but I've seen no record showing him with a middle name or initial. I'm fairly sure he is the same Peter referred to by relatives as "Big Peter Stroud" to distinguish him from his cousin "Little" Peter E. Stroud (c1813).
Peter is a son of Peter Stroud and Margaret Curtis. This is proven by an 1835 deed where Peter sold part of his inheritance. There is some question though whether it was this same Peter or some other one (Peter E. Stroud for example). I think the circumstantial evidence and census analysis show that it has to be this Peter G. Stroud. Unfortunately "Peter Stroud" signed the 1835 deed with a mark, and from this record alone it can't be determined whether Peter G. Stroud (1807) was the one or Peter E. Stroud (c1813) was the one. Both were over 21 in 1835. William Stroud (brother of Peter-1765/70) had a proven son named Peter also. Based on census analysis and the list of William's heirs as given in a court record, it becomes very clear to me which Peter was which. Peter (1807, "Big Peter") is son of Peter and Margaret, while Peter E. (1813, "Little Peter") is son of William and Delilah. This is the only way it works.
Further proof is found in that the children of James A. Stroud and William A. Stroud lived with and / or very near Peter G. Stroud in later years in Towns Co, GA. James and William are also sons of Peter and Margaret.
Peter was apparently home with his parents in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10) and still home in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10), and still home in 1830 (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10).
There is a "Peter Stroud Jr" listed on the 1830 census in Burke County just a few houses from several members of this family (James Stroud, Joseph Garrett and James Mashburn). This Peter is age 20-29 (born 1800/10) and living alone, so unmarried. It does say "Jr", so I'm reasonably sure it is Peter E. Stroud instead of Peter G. Stroud.
"B. Peter Stroud" was one of the purchasers at the 27 Nov 1834 Estate sale of his father's estate.
On 23 Feb 1835, "Peter Stroud" of Burke County sold two tracts of land to Gardner Stearns and James Stroud (his brother) for $160. The land was described as being on Muddy Creek, one of 275 acres, the other of 90 acres, all formerly belonging to Peter Stroud, deceased. Witnesses were Thomas Green and John H. Morrison. Peter signed with a mark. (McDowell Co, NC Deed Book 3 page 41).
This seems to be the time (1835) that Peter left Muddy Creek and moved west to Macon County, North Carolina and joined his sister Susannah Stroud Tanner and her family. I base this on the fact that "Peter Stroud" was listed as a voter in Macon County for the 1835 Congressional Elections. He voted in Franklin Precinct as voter # 308 and his brother-in-law John Tanner was # 311. This would seem to indicate that they were at the polls at the very same time. My belief (just a theory) is that Peter was probably living with the Tanners at that time.
"Big Peter Stroud" was mentioned in the 1837 letter from James and Rebecca (Stroud) Mashburn (his sister) to John and Delilah (Bright) Stroud, but his name was the last part of the letter to survive, so whatever was said of him in the letter is lost.
Very shortly after this, Peter Stroud moved down to Rabun County, Georgia (borders Macon Co, NC) and there on 20 Sep 1838 he married Lucinda Carter. They were married by Robert Woods. Lucinda's family lived in Rabun. She was born 24 Apr 1816 in Buncombe Co, NC, daughter of Jesse Carter and Lavina Sams (also my ancestors).
It would appear that they returned to North Carolina about this same time, though I don't know if to Macon County or all the way back to Muddy Creek in Burke County. Wherever they lived, it didn't last long, for they were back in Georgia by May 1840. They lived somewhere on "Lower Hiwassee" which was (at that time) the border between Union and Rabun County. Later it all became Towns County.
I have not been able to locate Peter Stroud on the 1840 census. Their son James was born in May 1840 in Georgia, but they were not found on the 1840 census in Rabun or Union County, Georgia. They did not seem to be living with any of their known siblings that year. I have had trouble locating several of Lucinda's siblings in 1840 also, so perhaps their section of Rabun County was missed by the census taker in 1840.
They were in neighboring Union County, Georgia for the 1850 census. They were next door to James Tanner (brother of John Tanner, Peter's brother-in-law), and just three houses from brother-in-law Josiah Carter (1807). William Stroud (c1833) and Priscilla Stroud (1800) were living with them. I am reasonably sure that Priscilla is the widow of Peter's brother William A. Stroud, and that William (1833) is their son.

They lived in the eastern part of Union County, which in 1856 was cut off to form Towns County.
Peter and family were listed on the 1860 census in Towns County, Georgia. They were still next door to James Tanner. Alfred Tanner age 21 was living with them, listed as a "Hireling" (Hired farm laborer). This is his nephew, son of James A. Stroud and Deborah England.

They were still in Towns County for the 1870 census. Numerous other Strouds were nearby, including several of their now married children. They were next door to James Stroud (nephew, son of James A. Stroud), and son James W. Stroud was two houses away, and John O. Stroud (nephew, son of William A. Stroud) was just a few houses away.

Peter G. Stroud died on 19 Sep 1872 per his tombstone. He is buried at the Carter Cemetery in Towns County, Georgia.
Widow Lucinda was listed on the 1880 census in Towns County, Georgia in Lower Hiwassee Township. She was living with daughter Sarah Naomi Stroud Scroggs and family.

Lucinda was still in Towns County for the 1900 census, this time living with son William Stroud.

Lucinda Carter Stroud died on 6 Apr 1904 in Towns County, and is buried at the Carter Cemetery.
