I (Marty Grant) am a 1st Cousin 6 times removed of Peter E. Stroud.

Peter E. Stroud was born ca 1812/13 (per 1860 census) in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC in the Muddy Creek area. I don't know what his middle initial of "E" stood for. He was called "Little Peter" to distinguish him from his slightly older cousin "Big" Peter G. Stroud (1807).

Peter is a proven son of William and Delilah (---) Stroud. He was named in an 1823 Guardianship record naming the heirs of William Stroud.

He was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20).

Peter Stroud was named in the Jul 1823 Guardianship record as a minor orphan of William Stroud, deceased and Delilah (his mother) was appointed his legal guardian.

He was apparently home with his widowed mother in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15).

On 27 Nov 1834, the estate of Peter Stroud deceased (Peter E. Stroud's Uncle) was sold, and "B. Peter Stroud" and "L. Peter Stroud" were among the purchasers, or course this is "Big" and "Little" Peter.

In 1835 Congressional Elections were held and the voter lists survive for Burke County. There were two "P. Stroud" listings, One of these was this Peter Stroud, I'm sure.

In the old Stroud family letter from James and Rebecca Mashburn to John and Delilah Stroud dated 3 Sep 1837, it was stated that "little Peter and Matilda Humphres are married". This shows that Peter E. Stroud married Matilda Humphries some time just prior to 3 Sep 1837. I don't know for sure, but I think she is a daughter of David Humphries (c1780) who was a neighbor of the Strouds, and who (in 1850) had a young Stroud living with him, who I think is a child of Peter and Matilda.

I had originally thought that Matilda's name was "Mary Matilda" for Peter's wife was listed as "Mary" on the 1850 and other census records, but new information shared by Ronnie Ranew clears this up. He told me that Eliza Stroud's death certificate shows her father as Peter Stroud, and her mother as "Polly Gibbs". This seems to prove that Mary was a different wife.

Apparently Matilda died ca 1838-40, possibly in childbirth. It is possible she didn't die until after 1840, but I'm not sure.

Peter E. Stroud married Mary "Polly" Gibbs before 1842, presumably in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC.

They were listed on the 1840 census in Burke County. He was listed next door to his brother William M. Stroud.

In 1842, McDowell County was formed from the section of Burke where the Strouds resided.

On 4 Feb 1847, Peter E. Stroud entered 100 acres (Entry # 447) on Muddy Creek adjoining Zachariah Hawkins and "Stroud lands".

On 4 Oct 1847 Peter and several siblings deeded some of their inheritance to Edward H. Grant: James Stroud, Peter Stroud, William Stroud, Jesse Stroud, Hicks Stroud and Nancy Stroud, heirs of William Stroud, deceased. Witnesses were Samuel Deal and S. B. Erwin. (McDowell Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 472).

They were listed on the 1850 census in McDowell County.

I don't have them on the 1870 census yet.

By 1880 they had moved into neighboring Floyd County, Georgia in Floyd Springs Township. They were listed on the 1880 census there. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

I have no data on them after 1880.

Children

Peter and Mary Gibbs had 7 children as proven by the 1850 and 1860 census. There was a Nancy M. Stroud (c1838) living with David Humphries in 1850, and I feel that must be Peter's child also by his first wife Matilda Humphries. It would appear that Nancy was "farmed out" to her grandparents after the death of Matilda, and the other 7 children are by second wife Mary. At present I have no additional data on any of Peter E. Stroud's children.
