I (Marty Grant) am a Great Great Grandson of Daniel Turner and Laura Virginia James. Daniel T. Turner was born 8 Nov 1846 per his tombstone and his death certificate. He was born in Marion Dist., SC per the 1850 census. I don't know what his middle initial "T" stands for. I once thought "Joyner" was his middle name for the death certificate of his son Thomas Lide Turner lists him as "Joyner Daniel Turner." That appears to be incorrect. Daniel T. Turner is a son of Daniel Turner and his 3rd wife Martha Collins. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census ("Daniel" age 4), and home in 1860 ("Daniel" age 13). Daniel was probably too young for Civil War service, and I found no record of him serving. Daniel Turner married Laura Virginia James on 3 Sep 1868 in Marion Co., SC. Their marriage was announced in The Marion Star Newspaper. (Genealogical Abstracts from Marion, South Carolina Newspapers 1858-1886 Abstracted by Gloria Calhoun, Pee Dee Chapter SCGS, Marion, SC 1999.) Virginia James was born 12 May 1840 (per her tombstone) in Marion Dist., SC, a daughter of Pinkney J. James and Sophia J. (---). She was home with her parents in 1850 ("Virginia" age 9) and with them in 1860 ("Virginia" age 19). Daniel and family were listed on the 1870 census in Reaves Township, next door to his widowed mother Martha: Reaves Township # 207/207 Daniel Turner 23 Farm Laborer SC; Virginia 20 Farm Laborer; Annie 1. On 16 Nov 1872 Daniel Turner purchased 11 acres of land from William J. Rogers (a neighbor in 1870). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book II page 147). Daniel and family were listed on the 1880 census. They were still in Reaves Township, apparently in the same place as before. Daniel's mother Martha was two houses away. Virginia's brother Elly James was next door: Reaves Township # 198/198 Danl Turner 30 married Farmer SC-SC-SC; Virginia 40 wife Keeping House; Anna 11 daughter; Rudolph 9 son; Alice 8 daughter; Charlie 6 daughter (sic); Cornelius 4 son; Lilly 2 daughter; Lou 1 daughter. On 1 Jan 1880 Daniel Turner purchased 9 1/4 acres of land from a set of heirs (not sure who they were heirs of), including: Jesse Rogers, L.L. Rogers, R.L. Rogers, Mary A. Hays, Martha A. O'Brien, W.A. Hays, B.H. Rogers and Rebecca L. Rogers. The deed referred to land formerly of John Smith. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book II page 157). Daniel Turner and family were listed on the 1900 census. Daniel and Virginia were listed on the 1910 census with their son Thomas Turner: Reaves Township, # 178/179 Thomas L. Turner, Head, 23 single, SC-SC-SC, Farmer; Daniel, Father, 63 married once, 42 years, Laborer; Virginia, Mother, 69 married once, 42 years; Rudolph, Brother 36 single, Carpenter; Mary Watson, Boarder, 18 Laborer; Kemper Floyd, Adopted Son 12. Laura Virginia James Turner died on 22 Nov 1914 in Marion Co., SC. She is buried at McMillan Cemetery. She died just before death certificates were required, so there is none for her. Daniel Turner died on 5 Nov 1915 and is buried beside Virginia. His death certificate is on file. His parents are listed as "Daniel Turner" and "Patsy Collins." His place of burial is listed as Clay Hill Cemetery, which must be an alternate name for McMillan. |

Children of Daniel Turner and Laura Virginia James. Daniel Turner and Virginia James had nine children, all proven by the 1870 through 1910 census, and all remembered by my Aunt Dot (Dorothy Turner Campbell 1927-1994) when she gave me my start on the Turner family history. All but one of these children are buried at the McMillan Cemetery. The children are further proven by a series of deeds.

Annie Iola Turner was born 21 Apr 1869 in Marion Co., SC. She was home with her parents in 1870 ("Annie" age 1), and home in 1880 ("Anna" age 11). She married Charles Wilson Floyd (1865-1949) between 1880 and 1890. He was a son of James Ervin Floyd and Temperance Elliott. See my Floyd pages for more on the Floyd family. Annie Iola Turner Floyd died on 2 Oct 1898 and is buried at McMillan Cemetery. Her husband married Rebecca V. Watson about a year later. See my Watson pages for more on that family. |

Rudolph Alonzo Turner was born 6 Oct 1870 in Marion Co, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1880 census ("Rudolph" age 7), and home with them in 1900 ("Rudolph L." born Oct 1870), and home in 1910 ("Rudolph" age 36). He married Mary Florence Watson on 20 Jan 1915 in Marion Co., SC. Mary was born 28 Oct 1889 in Columbus Co., NC, a daughter of William H. Watson and Mary Catherine Davis. Rudolph died 29 Jun 1940 and Mary died 21 Jan 1956. Both are buried at the McMillan Cemetery: "Rudolph L. Turner Oct 6 1871 - Jun 29 1940" and "Mary Watson Turner, wife of R. L. Sarah Alice Turner was born 21 Jan 1872 in Marion Co., SC. She was home with her parents in 1880 ("Alice" age 8) and home in 1900 ("S. Allice" born Jan 1872). Alice married William Boyd Collins ca 1902/03 in Marion Co., SC. He was born 24 Feb 1874 a son of Joshua W. Collins and Margaret Jane Sawyer. See my Collins pages for more on that family. Daniel Cornelius Turner was born 3 Apr 1875. He was home with his parents for the 1880 census ("Cornelius" age 4). He died 3 Oct 1893. His brother Charlie died just three weeks later. He is buried at the McMillan Cemetery: "Daniel C. Turner Apr 3 1875 - Oct 3 1893". The stone is badly worn and is getting hard to read. |

Lillie V. Turner was born March 1877 in Marion Co., SC. She was home with her parents for the 1880 census ("Lilly" age 2), and home in 1900 ("Lillie" born Mar 1877). She married Madison R. Perritt ca 1901/02 in Marion Co., SC. He was born May 1877 in Marion Co., SC a son of William D. Perritt and Sarah Elizabeth (---). He died 11 Jan 1931 and she died 1940, they are both buried at the Watson Cemetery in Marion County. |

Lula Nora Turner was born 1 Jan 1879 in Marion Co., SC. She was with her parents for the 1880 census ("Lou" age 1), and with them in 1900 ("Lou E." born Jan 1879). She married Jack Sawyer ca 1905/06 in Marion Co., SC. He was born 21 May 1886 a son of Clemy Sawyer (father unknown). They are both buried at the McMillan Cemetery, and have a double stone: "Lula Nora Sawyer Jan 1 1879 - Dec 3 1942 .. Jack Sawyer May 21 1886 - Sept 15 1945". |

Della M. Turner was born 11 Sep 1881 in Marion Co., SC. She was home with her parents for the 1900 census ("Della M." born Sep 1881). She married Zack Sawyer ca 1900/01. He was a son of Willis Sawyer and Margaret Wells. Zack is an uncle to Jack Sawyer who married Lula Turner. They are both buried at the McMillan Cemetery. His birth date is given as 31 April 1874: "Zack A. Sawyer Apr 31 1874 - Feb 18 1942" and "Della Turner, wife of Z. A. Sawyer Sep 11 1881 - Mar 30 1938". |

Thomas Lide Turner was born 5 Jun 1883 in Marion Co., SC. He was home with his parents for the 1900 census, and he was listed as head of household on the 1910 census, with them residing with him. He married Zadie Idell Watson on 10 Sep 1914. She was a daughter of William H. Watson and Mary Catherine Davis. Thomas and Zadie are my Great Grandparents. They both died before I was born, but my mother knew them both, though Thomas died while she was still young. He died 1 Mar 1953. Zadie died 3 Nov 1963. They are buried at the McMillan Cemetery with a double stone: "Zadie Idell Turner Sept 10, 1896 - Nov 3, 1963 . Thomas Lide Turner Jun 5 1883 - Mar 1 1953".
