The author (Marty Grant) is a 3rd Great Grandson of Daniel Turner and Martha Collins.

Special thanks to Wanda Chandler, Jo Dickerson and others for sharing information on the Turners and Collins families.

Daniel Turner was born ca 1795/96 per his age on the 1850 census (54) and the 1860 census (64). He was born in Marion District, South Carolina according to his 1850 census entry. When he was born Marion was still part of Georgetown District. He was probably born near the Cat Fish community where he lived later on, and most of the Marion County Turners were from.

I have not been able to determine who Daniel's parents were. I have no solid evidence, nor any strong circumstantial evidence. He did live in the same area as the John and Patience (Smith) Turner family, so it stands to reason he is part of their family. He isn't their son, but could easily be their grandson.

For the 1800 census Daniel would been about four years old. John Turner, his sons John Jr., and Reuben were listed in Marion District with medium to large size families. Unfortunately their households were all lumped together in one column, so we can't determine age and sex. The only other Turner in Marion then was Amos Turner, but he lived way down in what is now Florence County, and he isn't Daniel's father for his family is well documented.

For the 1810 census Daniel would have been about 14. Reuben Turner was listed with two boys aged 10-15 (ca 1790/94), one of whom could be Daniel. None of the other Turners had a son Daniel's age listed except Amos, who isn't Daniel's father.

Daniel would have been about 24 for the 1820 census. He wasn't married yet, so probably still at home with his parents. Only one Turner household in Marion had someone Daniel's age: Reuben Turner. This doesn't prove that Reuben is his father, but it does make him a strong suspect.

On 18 Aug 1820 Daniel Turner and John Blackman witnessed a deed from Joseph Bass to Daniel Platt for land on Buck Swamp. Daniel signed with a mark. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book M page 105). This is the first record I've found for Daniel. It is notable that John Blackman was closely associated with the John and Patience Turner family.

On 6 Nov 1824 Christopher Dew sold 50 acres to Daniel Turner for $75. The land was described as being part of a 4,336 acre grant to John Sanders 6 Feb 1792 bordering George Sweat's land and Nathan Hales line. Christopher Dew signed the deed with a mark. His wife Mary relinquished her dower rights on 20 Jan 1825, also signing with a mark. Witnesses to the deed were Archibald Kerby and Nathan Hulon. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book O page 142). (Note that two deeds from Dew to Turner were filed together, this one and another one dated 1830. See below.)

Daniel Turner appears on the 1824 Tax List of Marion Dist., SC. He was taxed 3 cents. This is probably for the land he purchased in November of 1824, assuming the tax list was made after the purchase.

Daniel Turner and Samuel J. Bethea and Moses L. Walters witnessed a deed from Phillip Bethea to his son Elisha Bethea for several tracts of land. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book N page 205). Daniel signed with a mark.

"D. Turner" was mentioned in a deed dated 12 Nov 1828 between Joseph Bass and William Turbeville. Bass sold 450 acres on the east side of Catfish bordering P. Bethea and D. Turner, being part of a tract originally granted to John Sanders and conveyed from him to Christopher Dew, and from Dew to Joseph Bass by executor. Witnesses were James W. Bass and William Bryant. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book N page 69).

"D. Turner" was again mentioned on a deed dated 25 Jul 1829 between William Turbeville and Robert Moody, being 150 acres bordering P. Bethea, Jos. Bass, D. Turner and W. Turbeville. Witnesses were Charles Taylor and John Bryant. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book O page 119).

On 17 Dec 1830 Christopher Dew, Executor of Christopher Dew, sold 50 acres to Daniel Turner for $31. The land was on the north east side of Catfish Swamp. A plat is mentioned and that the land was bid for by Henry Berry for Daniel Turner. Witnesses were Archibald Kerby and Mills Hays. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book O page 142).

It appears that Daniel Turner married someone in the 1820's. Unfortunately her name hasn't been discovered. She was born ca 1780/90 per the 1830 census.

Daniel was listed on the 1830 census in Marion County, SC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine where Daniel was living, nor who his neighbors were. It may be significant that he was listed in a group of Turners in this order: Robert Turner (c1794), William Turner (c1768), Daniel Turner, Joseph Turner (c1803), Henry Turner (c1811) and Jesse Turner (1800/10). When the census taker alphabetized his listings, it wasn't strictly alphabetical, but just by the first letter of the last name, so in other words all Turners wouldn't be together in the final sorted list unless they were close together on the original listing. That puts Daniel Turner square in the middle of the Cat Fish Turners in 1830.

Mrs. Turner died sometime in the 1830's, probably before 1835, and Daniel married again to Elizabeth Pace. She was born ca 1810/20 per the 1840 census. Her name is given on the death certificate of daughter Elizabeth Turner Collins Ammons Rogers. That is the only source for it so far. The 1810 census shows George Pace (bef 1765) as the only one of that surname in the county. He had a large family. In 1820 George Pace was still there as was Archibald Pace. Both families had one girl aged under 10 (c1810/20) who could be Elizabeth. In 1830 there was George Pace, Mary Pace, Richard Pace and Henry Pace. Of those Mary and George each had an apparent daughter born ca 1810/15 suggesting that Elizabeth would have to be from one of those households.

Daniel Turner was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was not alphabetical, so we can more or less determine where Daniel lived. His neighbors on either side were N. Christmas and Elisha Bethea (who was known to live on Catfish Creek). Other nearby neighbors include: John Turner Jr. (c1805), Martha Turner (c1784/90), Henry Turner (c1811), Joseph Turner (c1803), Crawford Lane, James Lane Sr. and James Lane Jr. This seems to be the area along Catfish Creek in an area that could either be Bethea Township or Moody Township.  Of the Turners, Henry, John and Joseph are proven sons of John Turner (1765). Martha is a proven daughter of Reuben Turner (who may also be Daniel's father).

Elizabeth Pace Turner died sometime in the early 1840's. Daniel Turner then married Martha Collins. She was born 6 Mar 1811 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist., SC, a proven daughter of Jonah Collins and Tabitha (---).

Daniel and family are listed on the 1850 census in Marion next door to Martin M. Turner (c1820), a proven son of Martha Turner (c1784/90) who could be Daniel's sister, making Martin his nephew. Daniel's neighbors in 1850 were not the same ones as in 1840, so he may have moved a little during that time frame. Based on a little census analysis, this seems to be near Berry's Crossroads and Bass Mill on Catfish, or between Latta and Sellers. Job Lee and wife Martha (Hussey) were also nearby in 1850. Martha is part of the John Turner family. Daniel's other next door neighbor in 1850 was James and Mary (---) Wilks: # 1189/1194 Daniel Turner, 54, farmer, $0, born Marion; Martha 39; Winie 15; James 14; Mary 12; Elizabeth 8; Jane 6; Daniel 4.

Daniel Turner was listed on the 1860 census in Marion District, SC. It is difficult to determine where he was living at that time. He was 18 households from Stephen Turner, a possible relative who was known to live in Legette Township (in the Centenary area). Daniel's neighbor on one side was Archibald Gasque, who in 1870 was in Legette Township. His neighbor on the other side was "Elizabeth Caves" age 70, who had several Collins children with her. She was also in Legette Township in 1880. Assuming neither she nor Gasque moved in that time frame, then that would suggest that Daniel Turner also lived in Legette Township area in 1860. That represents a move from where he was in 1850. Several of Martha's relatives were nearby including her brothers William and David Collins: Marion PO, # 2002/1972 Daniel Turner 64 Farm Laborer $ 0 / 200 born SC; Martha 49; James 22 Farm Laborer; Martha J. 16 Farm Laborer; Daniel 13; Stephen 7; Sallie 5.

Daniel Turner died during the 1860's, though I don't know what section of the county he was in at the time. They were somewhere in Legette Township in 1860, but by 1870 Martha and children were in Reaves Township near Mullins. I don't know whether they moved there before or after Daniel's death. There is an unmarked grave next to hers at the McMillan Cemetery (east of Mullins). That could be Daniel's grave.

Martha was listed on the 1870 census in Reaves (or Reeves) Township. They apparently lived somewhere east of Mullins. Son Daniel Turner (Jr.) was next door. The nearest landowner was two houses away, William Rodgers (c1830) and wife Sarah (c1833), and two houses the other way was George Smith (c1837) and wife Ann (c1845): Reeves Township, Mullins Depot PO, # 208/208 Martha Turner, 60 Keeping House, $0 / 0 SC; Stephen 18 Farm Laborer; Sally 12 Farm Laborer.

Martha Collins Turner was listed on the 1880 census, still in Reaves Township. Her son Daniel was two houses away in this census. William and Sarah Rogers who were nearby in 1870 had apparently died leaving a house full of children who were three houses away. George Smith and family from 1870 were also nearby. Martha's next door neighbor was Elly James, son of Pinkney James: Reaves Township, # 200/200 Martha Turner, 71 widowed, Washerwoman, born SC-SC-SC; Sarah 24 daughter single, cook; Wesley 3 son; John 1 son.

Martha Collins Turner died on 25 Feb 1892 (per her tombstone), and she is buried at the McMillan Cemetery, east of Mullins.

It is interesting that I found no record of Daniel Turner, or his wife or children, disposing of his two 50 acre tracts of land. I wonder what became of it? He may have sold it and the deed never got filed, or perhaps he lost it due to back taxes or something like that.

Children of Daniel Turner and 1st wife, Elizabeth Pace and Martha Collins. Daniel Turner and his first wife seems to have had at least two children per the 1830 census. He and Elizabeth Pace had at least four or five children. Daniel and Martha had at least four children. It isn't clear which children belonged to which wife in some cases.

  1. Unknown Daughter (c1825/30)

  2. Unknown Daughter (c1825/30)

  3. Unknown Daughter (c1830/35)

  4. Winnie Turner (1835)

  8. Martha Jane Turner (c1844)

  9. Daniel Joyner Turner (1846)

  10. Stephen Turner (c1853)

  11. Sarah "Sallie" Turner (c1855)

Unknown Daughter (1825/30).  Daniel Turner had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1830 census, aged under 5 (ca 1825/30). She was gone by 1840 so probably married or dead by then. I have not been able to identify her yet.

Unknown Daughter (1825/30).  Daniel Turner had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1830 census, aged under 5 (ca 1825/30), and still home in 1840 aged 10-14 (c1825/30). She was gone by 1850 so probably married or dead by then. I have not been able to identify her yet.

Unknown Daughter (1830/35).  Daniel Turner had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1840 census, aged 5-9 (ca 1830/35). She was gone by 1850 so probably married or dead by then. I have not been able to identify her yet.

Winnie Turner was born 23 (or 28) Sep 1835 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist., SC. She seems to be with her parents for the 1840 census, aged under 5 (ca 1835/40), and still home in 1850 ("Winie" age 15).

She married John W. Collins (c1837-1863) before 1855, a half brother of Martha Collins Turner, thus proving Winnie is not Martha's daughter for she wouldn't marry her own uncle (hopefully).  John was born ca 1836/37 in Marion Dist., SC a son of Jonah Collins and Sarah (---).

They are listed on the 1860 census in Marion District just a few houses from her parents. She is listed clearly as "Lazen" which may be an error,  or perhaps that is her maiden name: Marion PO, # 1995/1965 John Collins 24 Farmer, $ 0 / 200 SC; Lazen 23 female; Eliz. 5; John 3/12; Catherine Parham 12.

I don't know who Catherine Parham (c1848) is. There was an Ann Parham (c1810) just a few houses away, perhaps Catherine's mother.

John W. Collins enlisted in Company L, 21st South Carolina Infantry for the Civil War. He enlisted at age 25 on 18 Mar 1862 as a Private in Marion District. His last record dated Sept to Oct. 1864 showed him in the hospital at Richmond, VA. W. W. Sellers stated that he died of disease at Petersburg, VA in 1863.

Winnie and her children are listed on the 1870 census in Marion Co., SC near many relatives: brother-in-law William Collins; Frank Capps (her soon to be husband); sister Elizabeth Turner Ammons; nephew Benjamin Collins and Ebenezer Collins, and Penny Turner (c1840), relationship unknown: Moody Township, Marion PO, # 56/56 Winnie Collins, 35 white, SC; Lizzie 14 white; Lewis 12 white; Nancy 6 mulatto, Ida 4 mulatto; Frank 6/12 born March, mulatto.

The 1870 census entry shows that Winnie had two or perhaps three children after the death of her husband. Later records indicate that the youngest child Frank is a son of Frank Capps whom she married shortly after 1870.

Later in the year 1870 Winnie Turner Collins married Francis "Frank" Capps in Marion Co., SC. He was born 1 Dec 1840 (per tombstone), in Marion Dist., SC, a son of Francis H. Capps and Nancy Ann Brown.

They are listed on the 1880 census in Marion County: Moody Township # 213/213 Francis Capps 41 work on Farm, SC-SC-SC; Winnie 43 wife keeps house; Franklin 10 son; Winnie 8 daughter; Richard 5 son; Roxann 2 daughter. Winnie's Collins children were next door: # 214/214 Lewis Collins 19 single, work on farm; Nancy 14 sister; Ida 13 sister (all listed as white). And next to them was Annie Capps 65 widow (Frank's mother).

They are on the 1900 census in Marion Co., SC: Legette Township # 285/285 Frank Capps, head, white Dec 1840, 59 married 30 years SC-SC-SC; Winnie wife, white, Sep 1836, 63, 10 children born, 6 living; Frank son Feb 1871 21 single.

They are still in Marion for the 1910 census. Her brother Stephen Turner was five houses away: Marion Township, Marion Town, Penderboro [Road] # 43/44 Frank Capps, Head, white 70 married once 40 years, SC-SC-SC; Winnie wife 75 married once, 40 years, 6 children born 5 living.

Winnie Turner Collins Capps died on 10 Nov 1911 and is buried at Reedy Creek Cemetery in Marion Co., SC. She died just before death certificates were required to be filed, so there isn't one for her.

Frank Capps is listed on the 1920 census in Marion with son Richard and his family: Marion City, # 204/219 Richard Capps, Head, 45 married SC-SC-SC; Bertha L. wife 40; Rufus B. son 22; William S. son 20; Mack L. son 18; Letha M. daughter 15; Essa L. daughter 9; Kathleen daughter 2 6/12; Frank, father, 79 widowed.

Francis "Frank" Capps died on 10 Aug 1920 and is buried beside his wife at Reedy Creek Cemetery.

James Turner was born ca 1835/36 per his age on the 1850 census (14). He seems to be with his parents for the 1840 census, aged under 5 (ca 1835/40), and was home in 1850 ("James" age 14), and home in 1860 ("James" age 22).

I have no record of him after 1860. There were two men named James Turner who served in the Civil War from Marion, one of whom died, but his last record shows his effects were given to his mother Mary Turner, so it isn't this James.

Mary Turner was born ca 1837/38 per her age on the 1850 census (12). She was apparently home with her parents in 1840 aged under 5 (ca 1835/40), and still home in 1850 ("Mary" age 12).

Mary Turner married William Ward on 24 Jul 1856 in Marion Dist., SC. The wedding announcement in the newspaper referred to him as being of Horry and spelled his name "Worde."

They are on the 1860 census in Marion District. They are two houses from Matthew Ammons, soon to be Mary's brother-in-law. He had a Christian Ward age 30 with him (female), perhaps William's sister: Ella Grove PO, # 2116/2085 Wm Ward 28 Wagoner $ 0 / 100 SC; Mary A. 23; Sarah 4.

I wasn't able to find the Wards on the 1870 census in Marion, nor elsewhere. No luck in 1880 either.

Elizabeth Turner was born May 1843 per the 1900 census. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census ("Elizabeth" age 8).

Elizabeth married David C. Collins during the 1850's. He was born ca 1838/39 and was a brother to Martha Collins Turner, so that proves Elizabeth isn't Martha's child for she wouldn't marry her own uncle (hopefully).

The are on the 1860 census just two houses from her parents: Marion PO, # 2004/1974 David Collins 22 Farm Laborer, $ 0 / 300, SC; Elizabeth 20; Lucy 9/12.

David C. Collins enlisted in Company L, 21st South Carolina Infantry (same as brother John W. mentioned above). He joined on 23 Mar 1862 in Marion District as a Private. He was wounded 7 May 1864 and died 13 May 1864.

Elizabeth Turner Collins married Matthew Ammons between 1864 and 1867 in Marion Dist., SC. He was born ca 1827/28 in Marion District, parents unknown. He had been married before, to Martha (---) who died in the 1850's.

They are listed on the 1870 census in Marion Co., SC two houses from sister Winnie Turner Collins: Moody Township, Marion PO, # 53/53 Mathew Ammons 50 Farm Laborer SC; Elizabeth 35; Alice 5.

They are still in Marion for the 1880 census: Moody Township, # 5/5 Mathew Ammons 59 work on farm SC-SC-SC; Elizabeth 35 wife; Allis 13 daughter; McIver 8 son; Menden 5 son; Calhoun 2 son.

Matthew Ammons died sometime between 1880 and 1900 for Elizabeth was listed as a widow on the 1900 census. She was listed in Marion Co., SC with son Minton: Marion Township, # 77/78 Minyon Ammons, Head Aug 1875 24 married 2 years SC-SC-SC; Cleia, wife Dec 1882 17 married 2 years 0 children; Elizabeth Ammons mother May 1843 57 widowed, 12 children born, 4 living; Calvin, brother Apr 1878, 22 single.

Elizabeth married Hugh G. Rogers ca 1901/02 in Marion Co., SC. He was a widower with children.

They are listed on the 1910 census in Marion Co., SC next to Julius W. Snipes: Marion Township, Marion Town, Off Ellerbe Road, # 172/173 Hugh G. Rogers, Head, 62 married twice, 8 years, SC-SC-SC; Betsy wife 64 married 3 times , 8 years, 12 children born, 2 living; Hugh G. Jr. Son 31 single; Katie daughter 23; Lewis son 14.

Elizabeth Turner Collins Ammons Rogers died on 1 May 1919 in Marion Co., SC and is buried at the Gasque Cemetery. Her death certificate did not give her husband's name but listed her as married, so he was still living then. Her parents were listed as Daniel Turner and Elizabeth Pace. I couldn't make out the informants name, it looked like J. W. Snipes (thanks to Wanda Chandler for helping interpret his name).

Martha Jane Turner was born ca 1843/44 per her age on the 1850 census (6). She was with her parents in 1850 ("Jane" age 6) and with them in 1860 ("Martha J." age 16). I don't know if she is a child of Elizabeth Pace or of Martha Collins.

I didn't find her on the 1870 census. She was probably married or dead by then.

Daniel T. Turner was born 8 Nov 1846 (per his tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. He is my ancestor. He married Laura Virginia James ca 1868 in Marion Co, SC. See his own page for more information on him.

Stephen Turner was born ca 1852/53 in Marion Dist., SC. He was with his parents in 1860 ("Stephen" age 7), and with them in 1870 ("Stephen" age 18).

Stephen married Prudence --- ca 1875/76 in Marion Co., SC. She was born ca 1853/54 per her age on the 1880 census. I don't know her maiden name. I looked for anyone named Prudence on the 1860 or 1870 census in Marion Co., SC who might be her, but found no matches. She may have been from somewhere else or perhaps used a different name on those earlier census records.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Marion Co, SC in Wahee Township. They appeared to be in a boarding house consisting of quite a few families: Wahee Township, House # 90, family # 107 Stephen Turner 25 married field hand; Prudence 26 wife. Joe Turner (c1863) was two houses away living with Robert Lester (c1845). I think Joe is the son of Penny Turner, relationship unknown.

Stephen and Prudence were still in Wahee Township of Marion County for the 1900 census. Joseph Turner was still nearby: Wahee Township # 334/334 Stephen Turner, Head, March 1860, 40 married 15 years, SC-SC-SC, Laborer; Prudence wife Sep 1865, 44 (sic), married 15 years, 0 children.

Stephen and Prudence were listed on the 1910 census in Marion town four houses from sister Winnie Turner Collins Capps. John W. Smithy was next door: Marion Township, Marion Town, # 47/48 Stephen Turner, head 60 married once 34 years, SC-SC-SC, Farmer; Prudence wife 60 married once 34 years, 0 children; Molly Tart, servant, 30 married once 39 years (sic, this is for the next household), 2 children born 1 living.

Prudence died sometime between 1910 and 1915, presumably in Marion County.

Stephen Turner married on 12 Feb 1915 in Marion Co, SC. He married Mollie Tart who had been living with them back in 1910. Molly was born ca 1879/80 per her age in 1910, or ca 1869/70 per her age on her marriage record in 1915 (45). I don't know who her parents were or if Tart is her maiden name or a married name.

Stephen Turner died on 31 Dec 1917 in Marion Co., SC. His death certificate listed him as married, so Mollie survived him. He is buried at Reedy Creek Cemetery.

I did not find Mollie Tart Turner listed on the 1920 or 1930 census. She may have died or remarried by then.

Sarah "Sallie" Turner was born ca 1854/55 in Marion Dist., SC. She was home with her parents for the 1860 census ("Sallie" age 5) and in 1870 ("Sally" age 12).

She never married, but had at least three children out of wedlock.

In 1880, Sally was with her mother in Marion County, and had two children by this time: Reaves Township, # 200/200 Martha Turner, 71 widowed, Washerwoman, born SC-SC-SC; Sarah 24 daughter single, cook; Wesley 3 son; John 1 son.

In 1900, Sarah was with her son Wesley: Reaves Township southern section # 499/504 Wesley Turner Head, Nov 1876 23, SC-SC-SC Farmer; Sallie, mother Sep 1845, 54, single, 1 child born 1 living.

They are on  the 1910 census in Marion Co., SC: Reaves Township, # 16/17 Daniel W. Turner, Head, 33 married once, 5 years, SC-SC-SC; Mollie wife 24 married once, 6 years, 4 children born, 2 living; Beula daughter 3; (blank) son 4/12; Sallie mother 50 widowed; Benjamin Collins, brother 11.

In 1920, Sally was living with her daughter-in-law Molly: Reaves Township # 388/401 Mrs. Molly TUrner, Head 36 widowed SC-SC-SC; Bullah daughter 13; Hudson son 9; Daniel son 7; Sally mother-in-law 63 widowed.

Sally Turner died on 30 May 1921 in Marion Co., SC. She is buried at the McMillan Cemetery.
