I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Martha Turner, but I think she may be an aunt or at least a 1st cousin (many times removed). Martha Turner was born ca 1784/90 per her ages on the various census records. Her 1840 entry shows her born ca 1780/90. In 1820 she was born ca 1775/94. To narrow it down further I used her presumed entry with her parents in 1810 aged 16-25 (ca 1784/94). Combine this with the others and you get ca 1784/90. She was probably born near the Catfish Creek community of what was then Georgetown District, but is now Marion County, South Carolina. Martha is a proven daughter of Reuben Turner and Dorothy Martin as named in an 1860 court record concerning her son Martin Turner. Martha was probably home with her parents for the 1790 census, one of four females in the household. She was probably home in 1800 as well, one of six people in the household (all lumped together in one column of "free colored" persons). Between 1800 and 1810 Martha Turner began to have children out of wedlock. It appears she never married. Most of her children are not identified, but two are proven by court records which also name their reputed fathers (more on them later). Martha Turner was listed on the 1820 census, with several children in her household. Unfortunately, the 1820 census was alphabetical so we can't tell who her neighbors were. There are two adult females in the household, one being Martha. I don't know who the other is, perhaps a sister. 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Marion Dist., SC page 67 Martha Turner 310000-10020 Slaves=0000-0000 Analysis: 1 male 10-15 (1804/1810) Son? (1815/20) 0 Slaves Martha Turner was not found on the 1830 census in Marion District. However her father Reuben Turner's household contained "extra" people of perfect age to be Martha and her children. Since we know she is Reuben's daughter, then it seems likely she had moved back home by this time. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Marion Dist., SC page 48 Reubin Turner 1110000010000-0010001010000 Slaves=000000-000000 Analysis: 1 Male 60-69 (1760/1770) Reuben Turner (1760/65) 1 male 10-14 (1815/1820) Martin M. (1815/20) d/o Martha 0 Slaves Martha Turner was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. Martha Turner's neighbors on either side were John Turner Jr. (1st cousin) and Crawford Lean (Lane). Other neighbors nearby included several Turner families, such as Henry Turner, Daniel Turner, Joseph Turner. Henry and Joseph are her 1st cousins. Daniel may be her brother, or perhaps a cousin as well. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Marion Dist., SC page 140 Martha Turner 1111100000000-1000100100000 Slaves=000000-000000 Analysis: 1 Male 20-29 (1810/1820) Martin M. So I suspect she died in the 1840's (or married someone). There are several Turners listed in Marion in 1860 who were not listed in 1850 for some reason, so perhaps Martha was among those "missing" in 1850, or then again she may have died before then after all. I did not find her on the 1860 census either. In 1860, Martha's son Martin Turner was in court defending his right as free white. An Affidavit was filed by upstanding "white" citizens defending his character, but clearly pointing out that the Turners had black blood, though had always lived as free men and "passed" for white and were received as such, even though everyone knew they had African ancestry. The first statement was made on 9 Aug 1860 in the case of Martin W. Turner vs. N. C. McDuffie, Sheriff of Marion District. A statement filed by John Blackman Sr and James Lane Sr (both relatives of mine by the way) said this about Martin:
The following year her son Robert Turner was in court for the same reasons. 2 De 1861 Robert Turner, Jr. vs. William P. Campbell, Sheriff:

Martha Turner apparently had several children per the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census, all currently unidentified except for Martin and Robert. However, we have several "suspects" for her children, but keep in mind these are speculative, and far from proven. Martin Turner is proven by an 1860 court record, which also lists Needham Watson as his reputed father. Robert Turner is proven by an 1861 court record that lists John Martin as his reputed father. The problem with Robert is that we don't know which one it is for certain. The record that proves he is a son of Martha lists him as Robert Turner Jr. "Jr." was used in those days to distinguish between an older and younger man of the same name. The problem here is that there were more than just two adult Robert Turners in Marion District in 1861. Martha had a proven brother named Robert Turner (c1794-aft 1860). We don't know if he was still living in 1861 when the court record was made, but he was alive just one year earlier. Next there is Robert Turner (c1825) who married Olive (---). He was still in Marion for the 1860 census, and moved to Robeson Co., NC before 1870. Finally there is Robert Turner (c1832) who married Sarah A. (---). Either of these two younger Roberts could be the one who is Martha's son, for she did have unidentified sons that match both their ages. How then do we decide which Robert was hers? Neither of them named a daughter "Martha" so no help there. The only other factor then is location. Robert (c1825) was living next door to Martin, Martha's son. That is a strong point in favor of that Robert being the one. However, the other Robert (c1832) wasn't listed in 1850 at all. In 1860, Robert (c1825) was listed next to Robert (c1794) who would be his uncle. The other Robert (c1832) was not near any member of the Turner family. In 1870 Robert (c1825) was in Robeson Co., NC next door to Catherine Turner Parker, daughter of William Turner. Catherine was Martha's 1st cousin. Robert (c1832) was still in Marion, in Kerby's Township, but not near any other Turners, though Martin (son of Martha) was in that same township then. Unfortunately the only strong clue we have is that Robert (c1825) was next to Robert Sr. in 1860. That makes me choose Robert (c1825) as Martha's child, but it is not really strong enough evidence. |
Unknown Son (1804/10). Martha Turner had an apparent son this age. He was with her in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10), but apparently not with her in 1830, so probably married or dead by then. There are two "unclaimed" Turner's who fit this age group, including: Jesse Turner (1800/10) who was listed in 1830, but gone by 1840; Stephen Turner (c1810) who wasn't nearby in 1840, but did live in the same area (Catfish Creek). |
Unknown Son (1810/20). Martha Turner had an apparent son this age. He was with her in 1820 (age under 10, born ca 1810/20), but apparently not with her in 1830, so probably married or dead by then. This could be James Turner (c1817/18) who married Judith Powers. |
Unknown Son (1810/20) Martha Turner had an apparent son this age. He was with her in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), but apparently not with her in 1830, so probably married or dead by then. I have no strong suspects for this son. |
Unknown Daughter (1815/20). Martha Turner had an apparent daughter this age. She was with her in 1820 age under 10, (born ca 1810/20), and still home in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20), but apparently not with her in 1840, so probably married or dead by then. There was a female age 20-29 (1810/20) with Martha in 1840, but I think that was probably Eliza (c1819/20) wife of Martha's son Martin M. Turner. |
Martin M. Turner was born ca 1819/20 in Marion Dist, SC. He is a proven child of Martha Turner as named in an 1860 court case. That same case listed Needham Watson as his reputed father. He married Eliza (---). See his page for additional information. |
Unknown Son (1820/25). Martha Turner had an apparent son this age. He was with her in 1830 age 5-9 (1820/25) and still home in 1840 aged 15-19 (c1820/25). This may be Robert Turner (c1825) as Martha did have a proven son named Robert Turner, we just don't know which one, but this one is the leading suspect. Robert married Olive (---). See their page for additional information. |
Unknown Son (1825/30). Martha Turner had an apparent son this age. He was with her in 1830 (age "under 5" born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30). Three Turners fit this age group: James Turner (c1828), James Turner (c1830) and Joel Turner (c1825). I don't know which is the better match, or if any of them actually belong to Martha. |
Unknown Son (1830/35). Martha Turner had an apparent son this age. He was with her in 1840 (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35). This could be Robert Turner (c1831/32) as he fits age-wise and is otherwise unclaimed, and she did have a proven son of that name, but I'm not sure if it was this one. I'm partial to the older one (see above), but I could be wrong. James Turner (c1830) also fits. |
Unknown Son (1835/40). Martha Turner had an apparent son this age. He was with her in 1840 (age under 5, born ca 1835/40). This could be a grandson instead of a son, but it is hard to tell without additional information. Currently, I have no unclaimed male Turner's who fit in this age grouping. |
