I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Robert Turner, but probably a cousin at least. Robert Turner was born ca 1824/25 per his age on the 1850 census (25). His age varied from census to census: 38 in 1860 (ca 1821/22); 50 in 1870 (ca 1819/20), and 58 in 1880 (ca 1821/22). Only two of those agree with each other, but I don't know which is the most accurate among the various ages. Robert's parents aren't known for certain, though it is entirely possible he is the same Robert who is a proven son of Martha Turner (1784/90). In 1861 Robert Turner Jr. took the Sheriff of Marion District to court regarding the punitive capitation tax that was levied against free persons of color.
The problem is that we don't know which Robert this record refers to. In 1861 there were three adult Robert Turners in Marion, the oldest was Robert Turner (c1794), and he is a proven son of Reuben Turner. That leaves two younger men, either of whom could have been referred to as Robert Jr. at this time. This one, and Robert Turner (c1832). Martha Turner (also a child of Reuben) had unidentified sons in the 1820/25 age group and the 1830/35 age groups, so therefore both of the younger Roberts fit. For the 1830 census, Robert would be five to eight years old, so he should be in the 5-9 age group (born ca 1820/25). Several Turners in Marion District had apparent sons that age with them that year, including: Hugh E. Turner (c1794), Reuben Turner (c1785), Reuben Turner (1760/65), Robert Turner (c1794) and William Turner (1765). Of those we can remove Hugh and Reuben (c1785) from consideration for they were way down in what is now Florence County and not related to the Cat Fish Turners as far as can be determined. That leaves Reuben (1760/65), his son Robert (c1794), and Reuben's brother William (1765). William's family is well proven by deeds and he doesn't seem to have a son Robert, so we can remove him. That leaves Reuben and his son Robert (c1794). Reuben's daughter Martha and her children are living with Reuben in 1830 it seems, so that means Robert (c1825) could easily be there in Reuben's household. For the 1840 census Robert would be about 15 to 18 years old, so he should be in the 15-19 age category. John Turner Jr. (c1805), Martha Turner (c1784/90) and Hugh Turner (c1794) each had at least one son in that age group. We can remove Hugh from consideration due to his location (present Florence County), leaving Martha and John (Jr). John is old enough to have a son Robert's age, but he wasn't married that early, so it doesn't seem likely Robert is his son, leaving Martha as the main suspect. Since she had a proven son Robert, it almost certainly has to be this one, but there is still some room for doubt. Robert Turner married Olive --- before ca 1845. She was born ca 1824/25 in Marion Dist., SC. I don't know her maiden name. Robert Turner and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC. He was listed three houses from William Turner (c1768) and next door to William's son Martin W. Turner (c1816): # 1269/1274 Robert Turner, 25 Farmer, $0/0 born Marion; Oliff 25; Richard 5. For the 1860 census, Robert and family were still in Marion District. He was next door to Robert Turner (c1794) and just a few houses from Martin W. Turner (c1816) and Joel H. Turner (c1825): Oak Grove PO, # 1349/1336 Robt Turner, 38, Farmer, $0 / 800, SC; Olive 35; Rebecca Powers 13; Richd Turner 17; Gincy 10; Lucius 6; Alfred 4; H. Turner 3 male; Ellen 1. All listed as mulattoes. For the Civil War, one of the Robert Turner's enlisted in Company C, 26th Regiment Infantry as a Private. He was listed by Sellers as "Robert Turner", and he said he was captured at Five Forks in 1865. (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 639). I have no way of knowing if the above record is for this Robert Turner, or for one of the others. There were at least three Robert Turner's of proper age to be Civil War soldiers in Marion at that time. The other Turner's in the same company were from the Effingham area Turner's, and I think that Robert Turner was one of them (a son of Benjamin W. Turner) and not the Robert Turner under study here. Olive (---) Turner died between 1863 and 1869 either in Marion Co., SC or Robeson Co., NC. Robert Turner married Mary Eliza Cox on 28 Apr 1869 in Robeson Co., NC. She was born Dec 1845 (per 1900 census) probably in Robeson Co., NC. Her death certificate gives her parents as Everett Cox and Sallie Slater. They are on the 1870 census for Robeson Co, NC next to Catherine Turner Parke, daughter of William Turner (c1768): Thompson Township, # 40/40 Robt Turner 50 Farmer $300/228 NC; Mary 24 Keeping House; Alfred 13 At School; James 11 at school; Mary 9; Richard 7; Martha 5/12. Everyone is listed as white, and mistakenly listed as born in North Carolina. They were still in Robeson for the 1880 census in Britts Township: # 53/53 Robert Turner, 58 married, farmer, SC-SC-SC; Mary L. 40 wife NC-NC-NC; Martha 10 daughter NC-SC-NC; William 8 son; Orran 6 son; Robert 4 son; Sarah M. 1 daughter. Robert Turner died sometime between ca 1883 and 1900 in Robeson Co., NC. Mary and the children are listed on the 1900 census in Robeson, in Thompsons Township: # 72/72 Mary Turner, Head Dec 1845, 54, widowed 7 children born 5 living, NC-NC-NC; Martha daughter Jan 1875 25 single 1 child born 1 living; Robert son Jun 1878 21; Margaret dau Jan 1881 19; Saley dau Jan 1883 17; Laura F. G-Dau Jul 1895 4. Mary is on the 1910 census in Robeson with her son Orran: Thompson # 134/134 Oron Turner Head, 36 single, NC-SC-NC; Mary L. mother 60 widowed, 7 children born, 5 living NC-NC-NC; Sallie, sister 21 single NC-SC-NC. Mary Eliza Cox Turner died in Robeson on 20 Mar 1919 and is buried at Pleasant Hope Cemetery. |
