I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to the Hugh E. Turner family. I am very interested in him though.

Hugh E. Turner was born ca 1793/94 somewhere in SC. I suspect it was in the area just west of Effingham in modern Florence Co, SC, but then part of Cheraw District, Darlington County. In 1798 Cheraw District was dissolved, and "Darlington County" became "Darlington District", and remained so until 1868 when it became a county again. This region became Florence County in 1888.

I was told by a Cusack family researcher via e-mail (who's name was not given to me) that Hugh E. Turner was a son of Elias Turner of Darlington Dist, SC. And that Hugh Turner's wife Frances was a Cusack, a daughter of Adam Cusack.

Hugh E. Turner married Frances Cusack in the 1820/1830 timeframe. I don't know if they married in Marion or Darlington District, but they were listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetized, so we can't tell who the neighbors were or determine where they lived exactly. I'm reasonably sure they were in the Effingham area, in what later became McMillan Township (now Florence County).

On 31 Oct 1832 Hugh Turner purchased items at the Estate sale of Margaret McMillan. (Marion Dist, SC Sales Book A page 14).

On 13 Aug 1834 Hugh purchased items at the Estate sale of James Woodrough. (Marion Dist, SC Sales Book A page 247).

On 27 Nov 1838 Hugh Turner purchased items at the Estate sale of Thomas Steel. Elias Turner (Hugh's brother) also made purchases. (Marion Dist, SC Sales Book A page 141).

Hugh Turner was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. He wasn't listed near any other Turners (there were some on the next page though). His neighbors on this census showed he was probably still in McMillan Township.

Hugh Turner was listed on the 1850 census in Marion Dist, SC. He was six houses from Elijah Turner who was probably his son. In later years he was always relatively near Reuben Turner who was just slightly older than him. Based only on this, I suspect they could be brothers or at least cousins. After all, Hugh did name one of his sons "Reuben", so that might be significant. Neighbors in 1850 show that Hugh was in the Effingham area (McMillan Township).

Hugh and family were still in Marion District for the 1860 census. The neighbors in 1860 included a James Turner (ca1836) living next door to Hugh. I haven't figured out who he was, but Hugh did have a son about that age (born 1830/35) who is otherwise unaccounted for, so it could be his son. In the next house past James Turner, was Benjamin Turner (ca 1829) a son of Robert Turner of Williamsburg Dist, SC. Robert was born ca 1802, and could easily have been a younger brother of Hugh's, though I have no proof of that yet. Though he was from Williamsburg, he was still just a mile or so from the Effingham area (Effingham was right in a three way corner between old Marion, Darlington and Williamsburg Districts).

Hugh was too old for Civil War service, and as such, I didn't find any record of him serving (at least not from Marion District).

Hugh and family were found in Marion County, SC on the 1870 census in McMillan Township. He was two households from Reuben W. Turner a son of Reuben Turner (ca 1785) and just three houses from Benjamin Turner, the same neighbor from 1860, a son of Robert Turner (ca 1802).

Hugh and Frances both must have died in the 1870-1880 timeframe, as neither were found on the 1880 census. Their daughter Frances (still single) was listed as a head of household in 1880, with a niece and nephew residing with her. She was in McMillan Township in the same area Hugh had been. (See her listing below).

In 1888, McMillan Township and other parts of Marion and neighboring counties were cut off to form the new County of Florence. This family was then in Florence County from 1888 on.

Children

Several of Hugh Turner and Frances Cusack's children are proven by the 1850-1870 census records. There are other children, (per the 1830-1840 census) that I haven't identified yet.

Unknown Son born ca 1820/25 per the 1830 and 1840 census, but was gone from Hugh's home by 1850, so probably married before 1850 or died young.

Unknown Daughter born ca 1820/25 per the 1830 and 1840 census, but was gone from Hugh's home by 1850, so probably married before 1850 or died young.

Elijah J. Turner was born ca 1825/26 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in McMillan Township near Effingham (modern Florence County). I don't know for sure that Elijah Turner was a son of Hugh and Frances, but he did live near them in 1850 and 1860, and Hugh did have a son that age (circa 1825/30 in 1830 census, circa 1820/25 in 1840 census), so it could be. I'm fairly sure, but lack solid proof. See Elijah's own page for more information about him.

Frances Turner was born ca 1828/29 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in McMillan Township near Effingham (modern Florence County). Frances was still single into her 50's, so she might not have ever married. She was home with her parents in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census. In 1880 she was listed as head of household in McMillan Township, with two children, listed as a Niece and Nephew living with her.

Those children obviously belonged to one of Frances' siblings, but I don't know which one.

In 1888, McMillan Township and other parts of Marion and neighboring counties were cut off to form the new County of Florence. This family was then in Florence County from 1888 on.

Harriet Turner was born ca 1829/30 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in McMillan Township near Effingham (modern Florence County). She was home with her parents in the 1850 census, but gone after that. Either married or died before 1860.

Unknown Son born ca 1830/35 per the 1840 census, but was gone from Hugh's home by 1850, so probably married before 1850 or died young (or just living elsewhere then). This could be James Turner born ca 1835/36 who wasn't found in 1850, but was listed in 1860 next door to Hugh Turner. See James' own page for more information about him.

Martha Turner was born ca 1834/35 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in McMillan Township near Effingham (modern Florence County). She was home with her parents in the 1850 census, but gone after that. Either married or died before 1860.

Reuben Turner was born ca 1836/37 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in McMillan Township near Effingham (modern Florence County). Reuben was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

Reuben was of age for the Civil War, but I don't know if he served. An "R. H. Turner" enlisted in Company F, 10th Regiment Infantry, and died in Corinth, Mississippi. (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, 1902 page 630)

I don't know if the Civil War record is for Reuben or not, but it would explain why I have no further record of him. He didn't show up on the 1870 or 1880 census.

Druscilla Turner was born ca 1847/48 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in McMillan Township near Effingham (modern Florence County). She was home with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census, but gone after that. Either married or died before 1870.
