I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to Elias Turner, but I am very interested in him though.
Special thanks to Lois Silva for sharing her research on this family.
Elias D. Turner was born ca 1799/1800, either in Marion or in Darlington District, SC. (I suspect Darlington). A Cusack family researcher sent me an e-mail telling me that Elias was a son of another Elias Turner who died in Darlington District, having two sons who married Cusack sisters, daughters of Adam Cusack. Elias Turner (Jr) being one of them, and Hugh E. Turner being the other brother. The Cusack researcher (who's name I never got) also told me that Isham Turner married another sister. He didn't know if Isham was also a son of Elias (Sr) or not.
So, based on the anonymous Cusack researcher, this Elias Turner (c1799/1800) was a son of an Elias Turner Sr. I found an apparent widow Esther Turner in the 1820 census for Darlington District. She might have been Elias (Sr)'s wife. Her household contained several sons, including two in the right age category to be this Elias Turner.
Apparently, this family lived in the Effingham area, which is now in Florence County, but then was in both Darlington and Marion Districts along the common border. The actual town was in Marion District. There were several Turner families from this area, all seemingly related to one another.
Elias Turner (Jr) married Elizabeth Cusack ca 1820/23, either in Darlington or Marion District. He was listed on the 1830 census in Marion District. This census was alphabetical, so we can't determine who their neighbors were, nor what part of the county they were living in. However, it is highly likely they were in the Effingham area (McMillan Township).

Elias Turner was listed on the 1840 census in Marion District. This census was not alphabetical, so it was fairly easy to see that they were living in the Effingham area, based on their neighbors, which included a couple of Turners: Isham Turner (his brother), and William Turner (William P. Turner, relationship unknown).

By 1850, Elias had slipped back over the border into Darlington District, though still probably in the Effingham area.

Elias D. Turner apparently died before 1860, for on that census, Elizabeth was listed as head of household. Son Elias was next door.

Elizabeth died sometime before 1870. Lois Silva also found a list of heirs for Elias and Elizabeth recorded in Will Book 9 page 137. Heirs named were Elijah Turner, deceased, Elizabeth M. McLaughlin, Isham J. L. Turner, Dorcus E. McLaughlin, Hester Ann Turner, Mary P. Langston, Sarah C. A. Purvis, Margaret M. Anderson, Robert E. Turner, Frances C. Purvis, Benjamin W. Turner, Elias D. Turner, and Ann Turner.
Elias Turner and Elizabeth Cusack, had 13 children listed in Will Book 9, however, two of the daughters with the family in 1850 were not mentioned, but there were two "extra" daughters who were mentioned, I suppose they are one and the same, just under different given names (more below).
Elizabeth M. Turner was born ca 1822/23, presumably in the Effingham area (now Florence County), though whether in Darlington or Marion District, I can't say. She was apparently with her parents for the 1830 and 1840 census, and definitely with them in 1850 and 1860.
By 1870 she was married to a Mr. McLaughlin. Lois Silva thinks it might be Hamilton E. McLaughlin.
I did not find Elizabeth and her husband on the 1870 census in Darlington, though there were three McLaughlin families listed that year.
Elisha J. Turner was born ca 1824/25, presumably in the Effingham area (now Florence County), though whether in Darlington or Marion District, I can't say. He was apparently with his parents for the 1830 and 1840 census, and definitely with them in 1850, but gone by 1860. He was probably dead by then, since listed as deceased in 1870.
Isam J.L. Turner was born ca 1827/28, presumably in the Effingham area (now Florence County), though whether in Darlington or Marion District, I can't say. He was apparently with his parents for the 1830 and 1840 census, and definitely with them in 1850, but gone by 1860.
He married Lucy Head ca 1856. See his own page for additional information.
Darcus Emily Turner was born ca 1828/29, presumably in the Effingham area (now Florence County), though whether in Darlington or Marion District, I can't say. She was apparently with her parents for the 1830 and 1840 census, and definitely with them in 1850. She apparently married between 1850 and 1860 to Robert Ellison McLaughlin (thanks to Lois Silva for his name).
I did not find them on the 1860 or 1870 census in Darlington.
Jane Turner was born ca 1830/31, presumably in the Effingham area (now Florence County), though whether in Darlington or Marion District, I can't say. She was apparently with her parents for the 1840 census, and definitely with them in 1850. She was not with them in 1860, and not named in the 1870 list of heirs. However, she may be the same person as Ann Turner, who was listed among the heirs.
Elias D. Turner was born ca 1832/33, presumably in the Effingham area (now Florence County), though whether in Darlington or Marion District, I can't say. He was apparently with his parents for the 1840 census, and definitely with them in 1850.
He married E. Ann --- before 1860.
They were listed next to his widowed mother in 1860.

I did not find them on the 1870 census in Darlington.
Hester Ann Turner was born ca 1834/35, presumably in the Effingham area (now Florence County), though whether in Darlington or Marion District, I can't say. She was apparently with her parents for the 1840 census, and definitely with them in 1850 and 1860. She was apparently still single by 1870.
Mary P. Turner was born ca 1836/37, presumably in the Effingham area (now Florence County), though whether in Darlington or Marion District, I can't say. She was apparently with her parents for the 1840 census, and definitely with them in 1850.
Apparently she married a Mr. Langston between 1850 and 1860.
I did not find a Langston family on the 1860 Darlington District census, though several were listed on the slave schedule, so probably lived in a neighboring county, but owned slaves in Darlington.
In 1870, there were several Langston households in Darlington but I have not looked through them all to see if one is married to "Mary".
Pauline Turner was born ca 1838/39, presumably in the Effingham area (now Florence County), though whether in Darlington or Marion District, I can't say. She was apparently with her parents for the 1840 census, and definitely with them in 1850. She was not with them in 1860, and not named in the 1870 list of heirs. However, she may be the same person as either Frances C. Turner or Ann Turner, who were listed among the heirs.
Sarah C.A. Turner was born ca 1840/41, presumably in the Effingham area (now Florence County), though whether in Darlington or Marion District, I can't say. She was with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.
She apparently married a Mr. Purvis before 1870.
Margaret M. Turner was born ca 1842/43, presumably in the Effingham area (now Florence County), though whether in Darlington or Marion District, I can't say. She was with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.
She apparently married Reddick Anderson before 1870. (Thanks to Lois Silva for his name).
Robert Ellison Turner was born ca 1844/45, presumably in the Effingham area (now Florence County), though whether in Darlington or Marion District, I can't say. He was with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.
I did not find him on the 1870 census.
Frances Cansus Turner was born ca 1849. She was home in 1850 "Cansus" age 4 months, but not home in 1860. A "Frances C. Purvis" was named among the heirs of Elias and Elizabeth Turner in 1870. This must be the same person, but I don't know where she was in 1860.
Lois Silva thinks her husband might have been J. Morgan Purvis.
Benjamin W. Turner was born ca 1850, presumably in the Effingham area (now Florence County), though whether in Darlington or Marion District, I can't say. He was with his parents for the 1860 census.
I don't have him in 1870.
Ann Turner was named among the heirs of Elias and Elizabeth Turner, as "Ann Turner". Lois Silva lists her husband as Adam Turner. I think that Ann Turner was the same person as either Jane or Pauline Turner listed above. Adam Turner must be a cousin, no doubt. Adam Turner was listed as head of household in 1860 Darlington District, SC census. I don't know which Adam Turner she married.
