I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to Isham Turner, but I am very interested in him though.

Isham Turner was born ca 1800/1810, either in Marion or in Darlington District, SC. (I suspect Darlington). A Cusack family researcher sent me an e-mail telling me about Elias Turner (Sr) who died in Darlington District, having two sons who married Cusack sisters, daughters of Adam Cusack. Elias Turner (Jr) being one of them, and Hugh E. Turner being the other brother. The Cusack researcher (who's name I never got) also told me that Isham Turner married another sister. He didn't know if Isham was also a son of Elias (Sr) or not.

It seems possible (but not proven) that Isham Turner was also a son of Elias Turner Sr. I found an apparent widow Esther Turner in the 1820 census for Darlington District. She might have been Elias (Sr)'s wife. Her household contained several sons, including two in the right age category to be this Isham Turner.

Apparently, this family lived in the Effingham area, which is now in Florence County, but then was in both Darlington and Marion Districts along the common border. The actual town was in Marion District. There were several Turner families from this area, all seemingly related to one another.

Isham Turner married Martha Cusack before 1833, either in Darlington or Marion District. I have no proof of her maiden name, but the Cusack researcher I mentioned, said Isham married a Cusack (he didn't give any additional information).

Isham Turner was listed on the 1840 census in Marion District. This census was not alphabetical, so it was fairly easy to see that they were living in the Effingham area, based on their neighbors, which included a couple of Turners: Elias Turner (his brother?), and William Turner (William P. Turner, relationship unknown).

Isham Turner died ca 1848 in Marion District, SC.

His widow Martha, married Jacob Elmore between 1848 and 1850.

They were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, and her two Turner sons were there, but listed under the name "Elmore".

I didn't find Jacob and Martha on the 1860 census, but they were listed in Marion for 1870 and 1880, in McMillan Township. This area became Florence County in 1888.

Children

Isham Turner and his wife, Martha Cusack, apparently only had two children, both proven by the 1850 census. Martha had at least one additional child by her 2nd husband Jacob Elmore.

Robert M. Turner (c1832/33)

Peter Oram C. Turner (c1836/37)

Robert M. Turner was born ca 1832/33 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the Effingham area of McMillan Township (now Florence County). He was home with his mother and step-father for the 1850 census, though listed as an "Elmore".

Robert M. Turner married Frances Turner before 1859. She was a daughter of William P. Turner. Robert and Frances might be cousins, but I don't know how they were related.

I didn't find Robert and Frances on the 1860 census, though the index shows a "P.M. Turner" in Williamsburg Dist, SC. I'll have to check that out and see if it is really "R.M. Turner", and if so, could be this couple. Williamsburg District was just across Lynches Creek.

By 1870 they were in Marion Co, SC, in McMillan Township. They were listed next door to George W. Turner, a son of Reuben Turner.

Robert and Frances were still in McMillan Township for the 1880 census. This time they were next door to Peter Oram Turner, Robert's brother.

In 1888, McMillan Township and other parts of Marion and neighboring counties were cut off to form the new County of Florence. This family was then in Florence County from 1888 on.

Thanks to Bill Hatchell for much of the data I have on Robert and Frances Turner's descendants Also thanks to Terry Britt for some data shared on this family.

Peter Oram C. Turner was born ca 1836/37 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the Effingham area of McMillan Township (now Florence County). He was home with his mother and step-father for the 1850 census, though listed as an "Elmore".

Peter Turner was probably named for "Peter O. Cusack", who's name appeared in some of the early records in this same area, and was probably a relative of his.

Peter Turner married Emily Olivia Hewitt before 1857 in Marion District, SC. Her maiden name and parents are proven by Marion Equity Roll # 353.

I didn't find Peter and family on the 1860 census. He must have been wherever his mother and his brother Robert were, since all were missing this year.

Peter and family were back for the 1870 census, listed in McMillan Township. They were next door to George W. Turner, a son of Reuben Turner and just two houses from Peter's brother Robert. Just five houses away was William P. Turner.
