I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to the William P. Turner family. I am very interested in him though.

Special thanks to Bill Hatchell and Lois Silva for information shared on this family.

William P. Turner was born ca 1806/07 in what is now Florence Co, SC, but was then still part of Marion District, I think he lived in what is now McMillan Township, somewhere on or near Lynches Creek, probably near Effingham, SC. At least that is where he lived later in life. Bill Hatchell has "Pleasant" for William's middle name. Lois Silva thinks it is "Presly". I've not seen any primary evidence one way or the other.

According to Bill Hatchell, William P. Turner is a son of William Turner and Elizabeth of Williamsburg Dist, SC. I'm not sure what the primary evidence of this is, but it does seem to be correct. William (Sr) lived across Lynches Creek in Williamsburg Dist, SC, while William P. lived over in the Marion side of the creek, so they weren't really that far apart.

William P. Turner married Mary P. Carter circa 1830/32 in Marion Dist, SC. She was a daughter of George Carter of Williamsburg. She was named in George's Will (1855) as daughter "Mary Turner" and son-in-law "William Turner". (Thanks to Lois Silva for this data on the Carter family).

William Turner was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. He was on the same page with some other Turner families who were know to also live near Effingham, including: Elias Turner and Isham Turner, both formerly of Darlington Dist, SC, sons of Elias Turner Sr. These could easily be cousins of William P. Turner, though I don't know how they are related for sure. An elderly lady (born 1770/80) was with William's family in the 1840 census. That could be his mother or Mary's mother, or someone else.

William Turner and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC. He was just nine houses from Reuben and Catherine Cox Turner, who are probably related to him somehow. Based on his neighbors, I'm sure this was McMillan Township, somewhere near Effingham.

William and family were still in Marion District for the 1860 census. This census taker only got the names by initial, but we can still see that it is William's family. He was still in the Effingham area (McMillan Township).

Both William and Mary are buried at the Old Lebanon Cemetery, Effingham, SC. (Thanks to Lois Silva for this info).

In 1888, McMillan Township and other parts of Marion and neighboring counties were cut off to form the new County of Florence. This family was then in Florence County from 1888 on.

Children

William P. Turner and Mary Carter's children are proven by the 1850 through 1880 census records. Also I owe much thanks to Bill Hatchell for information on these children, including various birth and death dates, and the names (and maiden names) of spouses, as well as descendant information.

Unknown Daughter born ca 1820/25 (per the 1840) census. Since William didn't appear on the 1830 census, this child seems to predate his marriage, so could be a niece or some other relative instead. Either that or he was married before I thought, but was just missing from the 1830 census. This child was gone from William's home by 1850, so probably married before 1850 or died.

Unknown Daughter born ca 1830/35 (per the 1840) census. This child was gone from William's home by 1850, so probably married before 1850 or died young.

Mary Marinda Turner was born ca 1831/32 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in McMillan Township (now Florence County). She was home with her parents in the 1850 census. She married John Whitfield Hutchins prior to 1860. (Thanks to Bill Hatchell for the name of Mary's husband, and her full name).

John Nelson Turner was born 19 Jun 1835 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in McMillan Township (now Florence County). He was home with his parents in the 1850 census. (Thanks to Bill Hatchell for his full name and birth date).

John N. Turner married Margaret Julia Hewitt between 1850 and 1860 in Marion Dist, SC. (Thanks to Bill Hatchell for her maiden name).

John and family were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census taker only got the names by initial, but we can still see that it is William's family. He was still in the Effingham area (McMillan Township).

I didn't find evidence of Civil War Service for John N. Turner, but there was a "J. Turner" listed in Company E, 23rd Regiment, who could easily be him, though it would be difficult to be sure. (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 613).

John N. Turner and family were still in Marion Co, SC for the 1870 census, but by this time they were in Cain Township (borders McMillan).

Thanks to Bill Hatchell for much of the data I have on John N. Turner's descendants. Bill shows that John N. Turner was also married to Elizabeth Jane Elmore at some point, but I'm not sure if she was a 1st wife or a 2nd wife.

William Elijah Turner was born ca 1837/38 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in McMillan Township (now Florence County). He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

I didn't find evidence of Civil War Service for William Elijah Turner, but there was a "E. Turner" and a "W. Turner" listed in Company E, 23rd Regiment, one of whom could easily be him, though it would be difficult to be sure. (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 613).

William married Emily A. Munn sometime after 1860. (Thanks to Bill Hatchell for her name).

I didn't find any trace of William after the 1860 census. There was a William Turner and wife Mary in Reaves Township in 1870. He was born ca 1839/40, so that is close in age, but not in location, or spouses name, so I don't think it is him.

Frances Turner was born 22 Jan 1841 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in McMillan Township (now Florence County). She was home with her parents in the 1850 census. She married Robert M. Turner before 1859 in Marion Dist, SC. He was probably a cousin, he was a son of Isham Turner and Martha Cusack. I didn't find them in 1860, though the index shows a "P.M. Turner" in Williamsburg Dist, SC. I'll have to check that out and see if it is really "R.M. Turner", and if so, could be this couple.

By 1870 they were in Marion Co, SC, in McMillan Township. They were listed next door to George W. Turner, a son of Reuben Turner.
