I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to William Turner.

Special thanks to Lois Silva and William Hatchell for data shared on this family.

William Turner was born ca 1774/84 (per 1800 census), and probably in Georgetown District now Williamsburg County, South Carolina.

I have no proof as to who his parents were, but it seems likely that he is a son of either Benjamin Turner (1755/65) or possibly George Turner (bef 1755), both of whom were near him on the 1800 census, and both of whom were old enough to be his father.

William was not listed on the 1790 census, so he probably was still at home with his parents, as he would have been under 16 years old. Several Turner families in the region had sons that age in 1790, who are otherwise unknown. Amos Turner (bef 1755) had a son that age, who was no longer with him in 1800. However, Amos' estate records did not mention William, though they did live near each other, though on opposite sides of Lynches Creek, so probably related, though not father and son. Benjamin Turner (1755/65) had one apparent son 16+ (born before 1774) and one born 1774/84 with him in 1790. Since William was a witness to Benjamin's Will in 1821, it seems reasonable to assume they were father and son, though of course Benjamin could be William's Uncle instead. Benjamin did not name all his children in his Will, so I don't know for sure that he is William's father, but that is my best theory at present. George Turner (bef 1755) who was near William in 1800, was not found in 1790.

William Turner married Elizabeth --- in the 1790's in Georgetown District (now Williamsburg County), South Carolina. She was born ca 1765/74. I don't know her maiden name. I also don't know what the source for her name is, for I've not yet seen it on any public record (though I'm sure it is correct).

William Turner was listed on the 1800 census in Georgetown District, SC in Williamsburg County. He was listed just a few houses from Benjamin Turner (1755/65) and George Turner (bef 1755). There were several "extra" females with the family in the census, and it is impossible to tell who they were, but I suspect they are siblings of either William or Elizabeth.

In 1804 Williamsburg District was created from Georgetown District, covering the same area as the former Williamsburg County division of Georgetown District.

William Turner was listed on the 1810 census in Williamsburg District. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell if he was living near the other Turners or not, though only one name separated him from Benjamin Turner (1755/65).

					Mary Ann TURNER (1800/10) daughter

William was listed on the 1820 census in Williamsburg District. Once again the census was alphabetical, so I can't tell if he was living close to the other Turners, but he was listed right with Reuben Turner (1794/1804) and Benjamin Turner (1755/65). William had six females under age 10 (born ca 1810/20). These could all be daughters, though it seems unlikely, but possible.

On 3 Jan 1821, Benjamin Turner (1755/65) made his Will in Williamsburg District. He stated he had "six sons", but only mentioned Reuben and Hugh Turner by name. However, he named Reuben and Benjamin Turner as Executors, so perhaps Benjamin (Jr) was a third son. Witnesses to the will included William Turner. I don't know of any other William Turner in that area in 1821, so it must be this same William Turner under study here. This is the primary thing that makes me think William was one of Benjamin's six sons.

The above is also the last record I have for William Turner. I did not find William on the 1830 census, so William probably died in the 1820's. I've been given "1826" as his death date, but I don't know the source of that.

William's wife Elizabeth may also have died in the 1820's, for she was not listed on the 1830 or 1840 census, though she could have been with one of her children.

Children

William and Elizabeth (---) Turner had quite a few children per the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census. Bill Hatchell shared a list of seven children with me, but I'm not sure what the source for them is.

Unknown Daughter (1790/1800). William Turner had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800), but gone by 1810 so probably married or dead by then.

Unknown Daughter (1794/1800). William Turner had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800), and still home in 1810 (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800), but gone by 1820 so probably married or dead by then.

This is probably Barbara Turner born ca 1796. Her name and marriage info was shared by Bill Hatchell. I don't know what the proof is that she is William's daughter.

Barbara married first to John McGee and later married John Courtney. I haven't found anything on John McGee so far.

Charles Johnson shared data with me that shows John Courtney's first wife Rachel died in 1846, and that apparently John and Barbara married between then and 1850. I don't know when Barbara's first husband died.

John Courtney was born ca 1770/80 (per his various census entries). I found them on the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census in Darlington District. He wasn't married to Barbara at that time though.

I did not find them in 1850, but two of their sons (Hampton and Isrey) and daughter Sarah were all by each other that year in Darlington. Charles said they are on the 1850 census, and Barbara is listed as 54 years old.

I didn't find them on the 1860 census either, though John Courtney was listed on the slave schedule in Darlington, but not on the regular census (unless the index just left him out for some reason).

John Courtney made his Will in Darlington District on 2 Sep 1863 and named his wife Barbara, daughter Sarah Benton, son Ezra Courtney and daughter-in-law Elizabeth (apparently son Hampton was dead by then).

Unknown Son (1804/10). William Turner had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), and still home in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10).

According to Bill Hatchell, William P. Turner (c1806) is a son of William and Elizabeth, and he certainly fits, though I don't know what primary evidence there is connecting him to William and Elizabeth.

William lived married Mary P. Carter in Williamsburg (or Marion) and moved over into neighboring Marion County before 1840.

See their own page for additional information.

Unknown Son (1804/10). William Turner had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), and still home in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10).

Lois Silva shared data with me that there may be a Pleasant Turner in this family. If so, he would have to fit into this age group, so born ca 1804/10. It is also possible that "Pleasant" Turner is the same person as "William P. Turner" listed above. In fact, that is probably the case. I checked the 1830, 1840 and 1850 census records for Pleasant, and found several, but none who seem to be from South Carolina.

If Pleasant Turner and William P. Turner are the same person, then this son born ca 1804/10 is still unidentified. There is a Robert Turner (c1803) who was clearly living in the same area as the William Turner family. He fits age-wise. His 1850 census gives his age as 47 (born ca 1802/03) which puts him a little too old, but his 1870 entry gives "64" or born ca 1805/06. See his own page for more on him.

Unknown Daughter (1800/10). William Turner had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), but gone by 1820 so probably married or dead by then.

According to Bill Hatchell, there is a daughter named Mary Anna Turner who married James Folly (a. k. a. Farley). I found them on the 1830 census in Williamsburg, and her entry shows her born ca 1800/10.

I did not find them after 1830.

Unknown Daughter (1800/10). William Turner had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), but gone by 1820 so probably married or dead by then.

According to Bill Hatchell, there is a daughter named Nancy A. Turner who married Moses Benton. I found them on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 census in Williamsburg, and her 1850 census entry shows her born ca 1802/03. I don't know what proof there is that Nancy is William's daughter.

In 1850, they were just a few houses from Robert Turner (c1803) and his family. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
