I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Benjamin Turner family, but I am very interested in him though.
Benjamin Turner was born ca 1755/65, but where I don't know. Perhaps in SC. I don't know who his parents were, or if he was born in the area he later lived in, or if he came in from elsewhere. Benjamin Turner resided in the area of old Williamsburg District, SC near Lynches Creek that later became Florence County (in 1888).
Benjamin Turner was married before ca 1784 to Phebe ---. I have no clues as to her maiden name.
Apparently Benjamin Turner lived on the south and west side of Lynches Creek, just across from the Marion County Turner families in the same area (Amos Turner for one), and not very far from the Darlington Turner families. They all seem to be related to one another.
Benjamin Turner was listed on the 1790 census. He was listed in Prince Frederick Parish of Georgetown District. There was also another Benjamin Turner listed there. There were several other Turners listed also, including: Amos Turner, Drury Turner, John Turner and Reuben Turner. The 1790 census was alphabetical, so we can't determine who a person's neighbors were, nor where they lived exactly. Of the above, Amos and this Benjamin Turner were known to live in the same general area. John and Reuben lived on Catfish Creek, and I don't know about the rest (so far).

Marion District was formed in 1798 from Georgetown District, and it included portions of Prince Frederick and Prince George Parish (I don't know exactly where the parish boundary line ran). The Lynches River formed part of the southern boundary of Marion, with the land on the south side of the river still being part of Georgetown District for awhile, but known as Williamsburg County. (The 1800 census taker listed Williamsburg County as part of Marion District, but that was incorrect).
Benjamin Turner was listed on the 1800 census in Georgetown District, SC in Williamsburg County. He was listed just a few houses from George Turner (bef 1755) and William Turner (his suspected son). Moses Benton was just two houses away, and he (or a man of the same name) was one of the witnesses to Benjamin's will (1821).

In 1804 Williamsburg District was created from Georgetown District, covering the same area as the former Williamsburg County division of Georgetown District.
Benjamin Turner was listed on the 1810 census in Williamsburg District, SC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine who his neighbors were, nor where he lived exactly, though it is likely he was still in the Lynches Creek / River region.

Benjamin Turner was found on the 1820 census in Williamsburg District. His son Reuben Turner, and his probable son William Turner were listed on the same page.

On 3 Jan 1821 Benjamin Turner made his Will in Williamsburg District, SC (Recorded in Will Book A, page 248). This was published in "The South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research, Volume III Number 3, Summer, 1975"
He named his "dearly beloved wife Phebey Turner", and left her a third of his property.
He left "my son Reuben Turner" two cows and calves and bed.
He left "my son Hugh Turner" two cows and calves and bed.
He left "To the remainder of my six sons, two cows and calves and bed as they come of age or marry".
The above statement would suggest that Benjamin had 4 other sons, besides Reuben and Hugh, probably under age 21. Census records seem to show more than six sons total. Reuben Turner and Benjamin Turner were named Executors. Reuben is his son, and Benjamin might be another son. The Will was witnessed by: Solomon Coward, Moses Benton, William Turner, and Benjamin Turner. It was proven 23 Feb 1821.
I didn't find his widow Phebe on the 1830 census, but she could easily have been living still, with a married son or daughter, or perhaps remarried herself. Then again, she may have died before 1830. More research is needed.
Benjamin Turner and his wife Phebe seem to have quite a few children based on the census records. Unfortunately only 2 sons were mentioned by name in Benjamin's Will of 1821. He mentions two sons by name (Reuben and Hugh), and mentions "the remainder of my six sons". The 1820 census shows him with 6 males in his household (not including himself), but earlier census records show at least 4 other sons as well and several daughters.
Unknown Son (1794/1800) Hugh Turner
Unknown Son born before 1774. In the 1790 census, Benjamin Turner's household contained two males over age 16 (born before 1774). One of these was Benjamin himself, but the other may have been an older son (or perhaps a younger brother). In any event, this older son was no longer with Benjamin's family by 1800. This could be William Turner born ca 1774 who first appeared on the 1800 census. He was the right age, and he was a witness to Benjamin Turner's Will of 1821. If he isn't Benjamin's oldest son, then perhaps he is Benjamin's younger brother. He did live near Benjamin in 1800, 1810 and 1820. For now, pending proof to the contrary, I'm listing William Turner as a son of Benjamin. See his own page for additional information on his family.
Unknown Son born ca 1774/84. This child was with Benjamin Turner for the 1790 and 1800 census. He was gone from Benjamin's household by 1810. Unfortunately, there were no new Turner households listed on the 1810 census in Williamsburg that could be this person. That suggests that this son either died or left the area.
Unknown Daughter born before 1790. In the 1790 census, Benjamin Turner had 2 females in his household. One was certainly his wife Phebe, the other may have been a daughter. This daughter had either died or married before 1800.
Unknown Son born ca 1790/1800. This child was with Benjamin Turner for the 1800 census, but was gone by 1810. He had probably died or moved away by then.
Unknown Son born ca 1790/1794. This child was with Benjamin Turner for the 1800 and 1810 census but was gone by 1820. The 1820 census in Williamsburg showed no male Turner households that could be this person, so he may have died, or was just living with another family. This could be Benjamin Turner who was named as one of the executors of Benjamin Turner's Will (1821) and was also a witness to the Will. He was not mentioned by name in the Will as being Benjamin's son though, but it seems likely.
Reuben Turner was born ca 1794/1800. A child this age was with Benjamin Turner in 1800 and 1810. The 1820 census showed Reuben Turner as a head of household listed on the same page with Benjamin Turner.
1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)
1820 Williamsburg District, SC pg 306 Reuben Turner 100100-10100 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 18-25 (1794-1802) Reuben TURNER (1794/1800) s/o Benjamin & Phebe 1 Male(s) 0-9 (1810-1820) Son? 1 Female(s) 16-25 (1794-1804) Wife? 1 Female(s) 0-9 (1810-1820) Daughter?
Reuben was named in his father's will (1821) as both his son and as one of the Executors of the Will. There was another Reuben Turner (1785) just across in Marion District, who could be the same person, but I'm not sure of that. That other Reuben was also listed on the 1820 census in Marion District. He was married to Catherine Cox. I don't think that Reuben and this Reuben are one and the same, but they are probably related.
This Reuben (son of Benjamin) was not found on the 1830 census. He must have died, or moved away from the area.
Unknown Son was born ca 1794/1800. This child was with Benjamin Turner for the 1800 and 1810 census. He was not with Benjamin in 1820. This is probably Hugh Turner who was named in the Will of Benjamin Turner as his son. There was another Hugh Turner across the river in Marion District. That one was Hugh E. Turner born ca 1794. He was supposedly a son of Elias Turner of Darlington District.
I don't know what became of this Hugh Turner (son of Benjamin). He was named in his father's Will (1821) and that is the last I have on him.
Unknown Daughter was born ca 1790/1800. She was with Benjamin Turner in 1800, but gone by 1810, so probably married or died by then.
Unknown Daughter was born ca 1794/1800. She was with Benjamin Turner in 1800 and 1810, but gone by 1820, so probably married or died by then.
Unknown Son was born ca 1800/1804. He was with Benjamin Turner for the 1810 and 1820 census. There were four boys this age, and Benjamin Turner's will (1821) names two sons (Hugh and Reuben) and the "remainder of my six sons" and mentions they are under age (less than 21). This son is undoubtedly one of those under age sons mentioned in 1821. I have no clue who this could be though.

Unknown Son was born ca 1810/1820. He was with Benjamin Turner for the 1820 census. There were two boys this age, and I strongly suspect they are grandchildren, but could be sons anyway.
