I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Amos Turner family, but I am very interested in him though.

Special thanks to Claude Medlin, Patti Hanna-Thompson, Chuck Harrell, Kay Perricelli, Saundra Pryor, Jack Williams and Suzanne Bigelow for data shared on this family.

Amos Turner was born prior to 1755, but where I don't know. Perhaps in SC.  I don't know who his parents were, or if he was born in the area he later lived in, or if he came in from elsewhere. Amos Turner resided in the area of old Marion District, SC that later became Florence County (in 1888) in Cains and Pee Dee Township.

Amos Turner was married before 1790, but so far, I haven't found a name for his wife.

I didn't find any land records (so far) for Amos Turner, but it seems that he lived on or near Cain Branch (of Lynches River) in what later became Pee Dee Township, possibly near the present community of Hannah. This is based on his neighbors (as listed in the 1800 census) who were land owners and owned property in that area. I can't be more precise than that without additional research.

Amos Turner was listed on the 1790 census. He was listed in Prince Frederick Parish of Georgetown District. There were other Turners listed there also, including: Benjamin Turner, Benjamin Turner, Drury Turner, John Turner and Reuben Turner. The 1790 census was alphabetical, so we can't determine who a person's neighbors were, nor where they lived exactly. Of the above, Amos and one of the Benjamin Turner's were known to live in the same general area. John and Reuben lived on Catfish Creek, and I don't know about the rest (so far).

Marion District was formed in 1798 from Georgetown District, and it included portions of Prince Frederick and Prince George Parish (I don't know exactly where the parish boundary line ran). The Turner's were found in Marion District from then on. They lived in the region of between the Great Pee Dee River and Lynches River (all of which became Florence County in 1888).

Amos Turner was listed on the 1800 census in Marion District, SC. He was listed between Ann Gorman and William Stone (who owned land on Cain Branch of Lynches River). There were no Turner families nearby.

Amos Turner was listed on the 1809 Voter list in Marion District, SC.

Apparently Amos Turner's wife died before 1810. There was no female old enough to be Mrs. Turner with him on the 1810 census.

Amos Turner was listed on the 1810 census in Marion District, SC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine who his neighbors were, nor where he lived exactly.

On 27 Jan 1810, Amos Turner was one of the purchasers in the estate sale of William Smith Sr (who was just a few houses from him on the 1800 census). (Marion Co, SC Sales Book A-181 as published in the Pee Dee Queue).

Amos Turner was listed on the 1811 Marion tax list, and charged with 19 cents tax.

Amos Turner died between 1811 and 7 Sep 1813. For on that latter date, Archibald Cox was listed as administrator of the Estate of Amos Turner. (Marion Dist, SC Minutes of the Ordinary 1810-1825 as published in the Pee Dee Queue).

On 4 Oct 1813 an Estate Sale was ordered for the Estate of Amos Turner. (Marion Dist, SC Minutes of the Ordinary 1810-1825 as published in the Pee Dee Queue).

On 25 Oct 1813 the estate returns were given for his estate. (Marion Dist, SC Minutes of the Ordinary 1810-1825 as published in the Pee Dee Queue).

The 1814 Marion tax list showed the Amos Turner Estate listed, and charged with 81 cents tax.

On 2 Jun 1817 and 5 Jan 1818 the estate was mentioned, with Archibald Cox, administrator. (Marion Dist, SC Minutes of the Ordinary 1810-1825 as published in the Pee Dee Queue).

On 1 Oct 1821 Archibald Cox was ordered to make a return of the estate of Amos Turner (a record of the estate) at the instance (request / demand) of John Smith, one of the heirs. (Marion Dist, SC Minutes of the Ordinary 1810-1825 as published in the Pee Dee Queue).

On 3 Dec 1821 Archibald Cox's administration of the estate was ordered set aside and nullified, due to his failure to appear after proper notice. (Marion Dist, SC Minutes of the Ordinary 1810-1825 as published in the Pee Dee Queue).

Unfortunately, the above records only name one heir (John Smith), but fortunately, another record was found naming more heirs. In the Marion County Equity rolls (Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls by Lucille Utley) in Roll # 45 a case is found naming numerous heirs (this is from Ms. Utley's extract, the notes given are hers):

John Smith and others vs. Archibald Cox, adm of Amos Turner. Filed 9 Jul 1831. John Smith and Francis Smith his wife, Penny Turner, Thomas Turner, John Turner, Elizabeth Jane Turner, Benjamin W. Turner, Thomas Evant and Mary Evant his wife. Note: Mary had married first Benjamin Exum. Bill for account. Amos Turner died 1813 leaving considerable estate and heirs at law; Francis Turner, Penny Turner, Thomas Turner, John Turner, Elizabeth Jane Turner, Benjamin W. Turner, Mary Turner and Charlotte Turner, children of Amos Turner. Francis Turner has married John Smith; Mary Turner has married Thomas Evant (note: probably Avant). Separate answer of Archibald Cox shows that James Turner one of the children of intestate died intestate since since the death of Amos Turner and two of the complainants John Turner and Thomas Turner left the country about 10 years ago. 11 Oct 1823. Philip Bartel under oath 10 Feby 1832 states that he was present at sale of estate of Amos Turner and saw Benjamin Axum "who had married Mary Turner now Mary Avant one of the complainants soon after he had purchased a gun for $20.00... ."

The above record (besides naming the children) also tells us that Archibald Cox was apparently reinstated as administrator. Special thanks to Ms. Lucille Utley for publishing these records. (The equity records consist of numerous gold mines of information!)

Children

Amos Turner and his wife had nine proven children, all proven by the 1831 equity records mentioned above.

Thomas Turner (c1789)

Francis Turner (c1790)

Charlotte Turner (c1790)

John Turner (c1795)

Penny Turner (1794/1800)

Mary Cecilia Turner (c1800)

Benjamin W. Turner (c1807)

James Turner

Elizabeth Jane Turner (1804/10)

Thomas Turner was born before 1810 in the area that was then Marion District (became Marion County in 1868, and finally Florence County in 1888).

Thomas is a proven child of Amos Turner (Equity Roll # 45, 9 Jul 1831). He "left the country" prior to 9 Jul 1831 (per Equity Roll # 45). I didn't find him on any census records, so I don't know anything else about him. For the 1810 census, Amos Turner had three sons otherwise unidentified, one born ca 1784/90, and two born ca 1794/1800. One of these three is probably Thomas Turner.

Although he was listed as out of the country (in 1831), that doesn't literally mean he went to Canada, or Mexico, or South America or something like that (though it could mean that), but probably just means he left Marion County, and probably South Carolina for another state. "Thomas Turner" is a fairly common name, so tracking him will be difficult.

Kay Perricelli informed me that some notes she has from Diana Stevens mentions a Thomas Turner age 61 and born SC, listed in the 1850 Pike Co, AL census as being this same Thomas. His "missing" brother John was in the same county, so this seems a strong possibility that this is the right Thomas. That Thomas was born ca 1788/89 in SC. I'll try to find additional information on Thomas Turner of Pike Co, AL. His wife (also per Kay) was Francis Rodgers, whom he married in 1817 in Darlington District, SC. For now, pending proof to the contrary, I'm considering this Thomas Turner of Pike Co, AL to be the same one.

Special thanks to Saundra Pryor and Kay Perricelli for data on John Turner of Pike Co, AL.

Francis Turner was born ca 1789/90 (per the 1850 census) in the area that was then Georgetown District, SC, but became Marion District in 1798 (and Marion County in 1868, and finally Florence County in 1888).

Francis is a proven child of Amos Turner (Equity Roll # 45, 9 Jul 1831). She married John Smith (same source) sometime between ca 1815 and 1821. Francis Turner had a child out of wedlock around 1816, this child was James Dura Turner. He was a son of the same John Smith that his mother later married, but he retained the Turner name (as was the law, unless he put in a name change request to the court). (Thanks to Claude Medlin for the information about John Smith being James D. Turner's father).

The 1820 census shows several John Smith households, so I don't know which of them was this particular family (this census was alphabetical, so you can't tell where anyone lived). I think I've narrowed it down to the last John Smith listed (page 66). His household was "10010-00110" consisting of one male age 26-44 (born 1775/94) (John himself); one female 26-44 (1775/94) (Francis), one female 16-25 (1794/1804) (sister? sister-in-law?), and one male under 10 (born 1810/20) (James D. Turner). None of the other households fit this well.

As in 1820, the 1830 census shows several John Smith families. The one on page 45 seems a likely choice, and fits well with what we know about this family, and matches the 1820 household as well. This family was "0001001-0000101", consisting of a male age 40-49 (c1780/90=John Smith), a female same age (c1780/90=Francis), a female 20-29 (c1800/10=the sister, sister-in-law from 1820); and a male age 15-19 (c1810/15=James D. Turner).

The 1840 again shows several John Smith's in Marion District. Of the several choices, the very first one in the list seems to be the right one (page 168), family of "0000101-0100011". This consists of a male 40-49 (c1790/1800=John Smith); female age 40-49 (c1790/1800=Francis), female 30-39 (c1800/10=sister, sister-in-law from 1820, 1830); male 20-29 (c1810/20=James D. Turner) and a new entry, a female age 5-9 (1830/35=Unknown). Thomas Avant was just two houses away (their brother-in-law), so I'm sure this is the right household.

John Smith died between 1840 and 1850. The 1850 census showed Francis living with her son James D. Turner.

Francis Turner Smith died in 1856, per Claude Medlin. It doesn't seem like she had any other children beside James Dura Turner.

Charlotte Turner was born ca 1789/90 (per the 1850 census) in the area that was then Georgetown District, SC, but became Marion District in 1798 (and Marion County in 1868, and finally Florence County in 1888).

Charlotte is a proven child of Amos Turner (Equity Roll # 45, 9 Jul 1831). She was married to Archibald Cox (administrator of her father's estate). They were married prior to ca 1810.

Archibald Cox was listed on the 1810 census in Marion District (don't have enumerations yet).

He was listed on the 1820 census ("120001-51010").

He was listed on the 1830 census (page 9 "11100001-00141001")

He was listed on the 1840 census (page 143 "100100001-00012001").

Archibald Cox died before 1850. Charlotte Cox was listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, with several children, and apparently several grandchildren as well. (I've listed some of these grandchildren as her children, so as not to lose track of them, pending identification of their parents). My guess is that these grandchildren are children of Penny Cox, but I have no proof of that so far. Two of the boys (James and John) may be children of Archibald Cox Jr who had sons by these names (and were nowhere to be found in the 1850 census). In 1850 Charlotte was listed just a few houses from her sister Mary Turner Avant and just a few from her sister Francis Turner Smith.

Charlotte Turner Cox wasn't found on the 1860 census, so I suspect she had died by then, or perhaps had remarried. Some of their children were found in 1860 and later census records in Pee Dee township.

John Turner was born ca 1794/1800) in the area that was then Marion District (became Marion County in 1868, and finally Florence County in 1888).

John is a proven child of Amos Turner (Equity Roll # 45, 9 Jul 1831). One of these three is probably John Turner.

John was not listed on the 1820 census.

Although he was listed as out of the country (in 1831), that doesn't literally mean he went to Canada, or Mexico, or South America or something like that (though it could mean that), but probably just means he left Marion County, and probably South Carolina for another state. "John Turner" is a fairly common name, so tracking him will be difficult.

Kay Perricelli informed me that some notes she has from Diana Stevens mentions a John Turner age 54 and born SC, listed in the 1850 Pike Co, AL census as being this same John. His "missing" brother Thomas was in the same county, so this seems a strong possibility that this is the right John. That John was born ca 1795/96 in SC. I'll try to find additional information on John Turner of Pike Co, AL. His wife (also per Kay) was Mary Trawick, also from SC.

I have previously been in contact with Saundra Pryor who is a descendant of this John Turner of Pike Co, AL. Based on his age (of Pike Co, AL) and the age of John of Marion, I think it is a perfect fit. Saundra Pryor informed me that John had a son named "Amos" so that seems to be another strong point in favor of this being the same John.

For now, pending proof to the contrary, I'm considering this John Turner of Pike Co, AL to be the same one.

Special thanks to Saundra Pryor and Kay Perricelli for data on John Turner of Pike Co, AL.

Penny Turner was born ca 1794/1800 in the area that was then Marion District (became Marion County in 1868, and finally Florence County in 1888).

Penny is a proven child of Amos Turner (Equity Roll # 45, 9 Jul 1831). She was unmarried as of 9 Jul 1831 (per Equity Roll # 45). I don't know who (or if) she married after that. I have no other record of her.

Mary Cecelia Turner was born ca 1799/1800 (per the 1850 census) in the area that was then Marion District (became Marion County in 1868, and finally Florence County in 1888).

Mary is a proven child of Amos Turner (Equity Roll # 45, 9 Jul 1831). Mary was married twice, first to Benjamin Exum, and second to Thomas G. Avant (both proven by the Equity roll).

Mary married Benjamin Exum prior to 1812, I believe. He was listed on the 1820 census in Marion District ("200001-10100"). The ages there show him to be much older than Mary.

Benjamin Exum died in 1821, as proven by Equity Roll # 6 (Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls by Lucille Utley).

Equity Roll # 6 (Robert Exum vs. T.G. Avant, adm and Mary Exum, extrx of Benjamin Exum, deceased) shows that Robert Exum was a son of Benjamin, and that Benjamin died in 1821 testate (with a Will). Also names Robert's brothers John and Elijah Exum and that they died (prior to 30 Oct 1843) and their sister Mary Elizabeth Exum who married Larry Hyman. Equity Roll # 7 is Larry Hyman and wife vs the same, and gives basically the same information again. Both also state that Mary, widow of Benjamin Exum, married Thomas G. Avant after the death of Benjamin Exum.

I didn't find Thomas Avant or Mary Turner Exum on the 1830 census.

Mary Turner Exum, married Thomas G. Avant before 3 Dec 1833 (per Equity records), so probably between 1830 and 1833.

Thomas P Avant was listed on the 1840 census in Marion District. He was just two houses from his brother-in-law John Smith. The middle initial was either given wrong, or transcribed wrong (this is from a published version). The household contained "001101-0000101".

In 1850 Thomas Avant and Mary were listed near several of her sisters in Marion District. Apparently Mary died prior to 1860, for on the 1860 census "T. G. Avant" had a different wife (Martha) and several young children. He and his 2nd family were listed on the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census in Marion.

Benjamin W. Turner was born ca 1806/07 (per the 1850 census) in the area that was then Marion District (became Marion County in 1868, and finally Florence County in 1888).

Benjamin is a proven child of Amos Turner (Equity Roll # 45, 9 Jul 1831). Benjamin married Cecilia Coleman ca 1830. See Benjamin's own page for additional information on him.

James Turner was born before 1810 in the area that was then Marion District (became Marion County in 1868, and finally Florence County in 1888). He may have been born ca 1794/1800 or perhaps ca 1804/10.

James is a proven child of Amos Turner (Equity Roll # 45, 9 Jul 1831). He died unmarried prior to 9 Jul 1831 (per Equity Roll # 45). I didn't find him on any census records, so I don't know anything else about him. For the 1810 census, Amos Turner had three sons otherwise unidentified, one born ca 1784/90, and two born ca 1794/1800. One of these three is probably James Turner.

Elizabeth Jane Turner was born ca 1804/10 in the area that was then Marion District (became Marion County in 1868, and finally Florence County in 1888).

Elizabeth is a proven child of Amos Turner (Equity Roll # 45, 9 Jul 1831). She was unmarried as of 9 Jul 1831 (per Equity Roll # 45). I don't know who (or if) she married after that. I have no other record of her.
