I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to the James Dura Turner family. I am very interested in him though.

Special thanks to Claude Medlin for many of the birth and death dates I show for this family, data he obtained from James D. Turner's family bible and other sources.

James Dura Turner was born ca 1814/15 in Marion Dist, SC, probably in the area that later became Florence County (in 1888), either in Cain, McMillan or Pee Dee Township, at least that is where he lived later on (in Pee Dee Township). James D. Turner is a son Francis Turner (daughter of Amos Turner), born before her marriage to John Smith. Apparently John Smith was James D. Turner's father, but since he was born out of wedlock, he took his mother's maiden name, as was required (by law in most states). (Thanks to Claude Medlin for that information).

James D. Turner apparently lived with his parents until his marriage in 1845. He married his 1st cousin Charlotte Cox on 1 Jul 1845 (thanks to Claude Medlin for the date). Charlotte was a daughter of Archibald Cox and Charlotte Turner a daughter of Amos Turner.

James and wife Charlotte, and his widowed mother Francis, were listed on the 1850 census in Marion Dist, SC. No other Turner families were very close by.

Charlotte Cox Turner died 30 Oct 1852 in Marion Dist, SC, just a few days after giving birth to her last child (Elizabeth born 24 Oct 1852). (Dates thanks to Claude Medlin)

On 23 Feb 1854 James married his wife's sister Mary Cox. They were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. Unfortunately for us, this census entry only listed them by initials, but it is obvious it is the same family.

James and family were in Marion County, SC for the 1870 census, and listed in Pee Dee Township (modern Florence County). They were the only Turners listed in that township.

James D. Turner and several of his children were listed on the 1880 census in Marion Co, SC in Pee Dee Township. Interestingly, James reports his mother's birth place as "VA" in this census. The only census report we have for his mother Francis (1850 census), shows her born in "Marion Dist, SC".
