I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Benjamin W. Turner family. I am very interested in him though.

Special thanks to Chuck Harrell and Kay T. Perricelli for data shared on this family.

Benjamin W. Turner was born ca 1806/07 in Marion Dist, SC, probably in the area that later became Florence County (in 1888), either in Cain or McMillan Township, at least that is where he lived later on (in Cain Township). Benjamin is a proven son of Amos Turner, as proven by Marion County Equity Roll # 45, which shows Benjamin W. Turner as an heir of Amos Turner who died in 1813. (Roll # 45, Marion County, South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls by Lucille Utley)

Benjamin W. Turner was only about 6 or 7 when his father died in 1813, and we don't know when his mother died. There was no trace of Benjamin on the 1820 or 1830 census, so he was probably residing with relatives.

Benjamin W. Turner married Cecilia Coleman ca 1830 in Marion Dist, SC. I didn't find them listed on the 1830 census though.I've had her maiden name awhile, and I don't know where I got it from. Does anyone have proof? I'm sure someone sent it to me, but I failed to note who it was. It must have been several years ago before I kept good notes.

Benjamin was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. On this census, Benjamin was listed on the same page with Reuben Turner (no known relationship to Benjamin, though probably a cousin at least).

Benjamin W. Turner died 13 June 1879 (thanks to Kay T. Perricelli for that date). I don't know when Cecelia died, but I didn't find her on the 1880 census, so she probably died in the 1870's.

In 1888, Cains Township and other parts of Marion and neighboring counties were cut off to form the new County of Florence. This family was then in Florence County from 1888 on.

Children

Benjamin W. Turner and Cecilia Coleman's children are mostly proven by the 1850-1870 census records.

John K. Turner (c1830)

Unknown Daughter (c1830/35)

Lewis Turner (c1836)

Elizabeth Turner (c1837)

Amanda Turner (c1839)

Sarah Turner (c1840)

Thomas Turner (c1844)

Robert Turner (1844)

James Amos Turner (c1849)

John K. Turner was born ca 1829/30 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Cain Township (modern Florence County). John was home with his parents for the 1850 census. He married Martha --- ca 1850 (probably after June, since he wasn't married on the 1850 census, which was supposed to be as of June 1st). John and Martha were listed on the 1860 census just 9 houses from his parents:

I didn't find John K. Turner and family on the 1870 census.

In 1880 they were in Cain Township. They may be there in 1870, and I missed them or else they were missed by the census taker.

Unknown Daughter was born ca 1830/35 per the 1840 census. She was not with her parents for the 1850 census, so probably had married, or died by then.

Lewis Turner was born ca 1835/36 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Cain Township (modern Florence County). Lewis was home with his parents for the 1850 census. I didn't find him in 1860.

Lewis Turner enlisted for the Civil War as a Private in Company I, 10th Regiment Infantry. He died in GA. (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, 1902 page 642).

Elizabeth Turner was born ca 1836/37 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Cain Township (modern Florence County). Elizabeth was home with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. I have no further record of her.

Amanda Turner was born ca 1838/39 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Cain Township (modern Florence County). She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. I have no further record of her.

Sarah Turner was born ca 1839/40 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Cain Township (modern Florence County). She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. I have no further record of her.

Thomas Turner was born ca 1843/44 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Cain Township (modern Florence County). He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. I have no further record of him. He was of age to serve during the Civil War, but I didn't find a record of service.

Robert Turner was born 11 Nov 1844 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Cain Township (modern Florence County). (Thanks to Chuck Harrell for his birth date). He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

For the Civil War, Robert Turner enlisted as a Private in Company C, 26th Regiment Infantry. He was captured at Five Forks in 1865. (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, 1902, page 638).

Robert married Rowena Palmyra Cain before 1868 in Marion Co, SC. (Thanks to Chuck Harrell for her maiden name). They were listed on the 1870 census in Marion Co, SC in Cain Township (modern Florence County).
