I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to the Elijah Turner family. I am very interested in him though.

Elijah Turner was born ca 1825/26 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in McMillan Township (now Florence County).

I believe he is a son of Hugh E. Turner and Frances Cusack, but don't have solid proof. He did live near him in both the 1850 and 1860 census, and Hugh did have a son this age with him in the 1830 and 1840 census, who is otherwise unidentified.

Elijah would have been about 4 years old by the 1830 census, so he should be enumerated in the "under 5" age group (born ca 1825/30). Hugh E. Turner did have an apparent son that age with him that year (as did many others).

Elijah would have been about 14 years old by the 1830 census, so he ought to be in the age 10-14 group (born ca 1825/30). Hugh E. Turner did have an apparent son that age with him that year (as did many others).

Elijah Turner married Jane --- sometime before 1850 in Marion Dist, SC. They were listed on the 1850 census there, just six houses from Hugh E. Turner and family. They had no children yet, so they must have just married within a year or so of 1850.

Elijah and family were still in Marion District for the 1860 census. This time they were about 20 houses from Hugh Turner and family. They were only 5 houses from William P. Turner family. This shows that Elijah and family were somewhere near Effingham in McMillan Township (modern Florence County).

For the Civil War, Elijah may have served. There was an "E. Turner" listed in Company E, 23rd Regiment, who could easily be him, though it would be difficult to be sure. (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, 1902 page 613).

I didn't find Elijah nor his family in the 1870 census, at least not in Marion County.

I didn't find them in 1880 either.

In 1888, McMillan Township and other parts of Marion and neighboring counties were cut off to form the new County of Florence.

Children

Elijah and Jane had at least three children per the various census records. I don't have additional data on them yet.
