I don't know how I'm related to Joel Turner, but probably a cousin at least.

Joel H. Turner was born ca 1824/25 per his age on the 1850 census (25). He was born in Marion Dist., SC (also per 1850 census). I don't know who his parents were, but he could be a son of Robert Turner (c1794) and Rebecca (---). Joel was next to them in 1850 and 1860, and they did have an apparent son his age with them in 1830 and 1840.

For the 1830 census Joel would have been about five years old. He could have been enumerated in the under 5 age group (born ca 1825/30) or in the 5-9 age group (ca 1820/25). Henry Turner (c1811) had one son under 5 (unidentified, but probably not Joel); Jesse Turner (1800/10) had one under 5 (unidentified); John Turner (1765) had one under 5 (unidentified); Joseph Turner (c1803) had one under 5 (unidentified); Reuben Turner (1760/65) had one under 5 and one 5-9 (both unidentified); Robert Turner (c1794) had one 5-9 (unidentified) and William Turner (c1768) had one 5-9 (identified). 1830 census analysis leaves the field wide open for Joel's parents.

In 1840 Joel Turner (c1825) could be either in the 10-14 age group (ca 1825/30) or in the 15-19 group (ca 1820/25). John Turner Jr. (c1805) had one 15-19 with him (unidentified); Joseph Turner (c1803) had one 10-14 (unidentified); Martha Turner (1784/90) had one 10-14 and one 15-19 (one of whom might be identified); and John Turner (1765) had one 10-14 (unidentified). As in 1830, the 1840 census shows several possibilities. It is notable that Robert Turner (c1794) had no apparent son Joel's age with him in 1840, though he did back in 1830.

Joel H. Turner married Permelia (---) in the 1840's, before ca 1848. She was born ca 1829/30 in Marion Dist., SC. I don't know what her maiden name was.

They are listed on the 1850 census in Marion District between the households of Robert Turner (c1794) and Rachel Turner (c1824). Other neighbors were known residents of what later became Kirby Township, so they were somewhere on the west or south side of Catfish Creek: # 1244/1249 Joel Turner, 25 Labourer, born Marion; Amelia 20; Joseph 2; Rebecca 1/12.

In 1860 Joel and family were still next to Robert Turner (c1794). Robert Turner (c1825) was two houses away, and Willis Turner (c1823) was also two houses away, in the other direction: Oak Grove PO, # 1351/1338 Joel Turner, 32 Farmer, $0 / 150 SC; Parmelia 32; Joseph 12; L. A. (or S. A.) Turner 10 female; A. E. Turner 6 female; S. J. (or L. J.) Turner, 3 female; A. Turner 1/12 female. All listed as mulattoes.

On 28 Sep 1861 Joel Turner enlisted in Company E., 23rd South Carolina Infantry (Hatch's Regiment Coastal Rangers) as a Private. He enlisted at Marion aged 32. He was wounded at Sharpesburg, Maryland on 17 Sep 1862. Another report shows he was "slightly wounded." On the Sep-Oct 1863 report, he was listed as having been "discharged by reason of half blood." That suggests his African heritage played a roll in his discharge, though I don't know why it would as most of the other Turners were of the same heritage and served.

Joel Turner Jr. enlisted in Marion as a Private in Company B., 3rd Regiment South Carolina troops on 6 Sep 186_ ('63 probably). He was listed as present through October 1863. He was reported as having deserted on 27 Nov 1863. This record probably refers to Joel H. Turner (c1848) son of Ann Turner (c1820), though he was only about 15 when he enlisted, if it is him.

Joel Turner enlisted on 18 Nov 1864 as a Private in Company I, First Regiment (Hagood's) South Carolina Infantry at Columbia, SC. He was present for the Jan-Feb 1865 musters. He was listed as a Prisoner of War among those who surrendered under Robert E. Lee to U. S. Grant at Appomattox Court House on 9 Apr 1865.

I was unable to locate Joel Turner on the 1870 census, though it seems he should have been listed in Kirby Township in Marion Co., SC.  This census is the worst one ever as many families are missing.

Joel Turner was listed on the 1880 census in Marion Co., SC next to Robert Turner (c1825):  Kirby Township # 355/355 Joel H. Turner, 51 married, Farmer, SC-SC-SC; Permillea, 50 wife Keeping house; Angialine 20 daughter married; Ida 1 granddaughter. All listed as white.

I wasn't able to find Joel or Permelia on the 1900 census. They were probably both dead by then, presumably dying in Marion Co., SC.

Children of Joel H. Turner and Permelia (---).  Joel Turner and Permelia had at least five children, proven by the 1850, 1860 and 1880 census. One of the daughters may have married an Allen for Joseph had Allens with him in 1880 (no relationship given) and in 1900 (nephews). Ferdinand D. Kirby (1865-1925) may be Joel Turner's son, for Ferdinand's death certificate lists Joel Turner as his father. That isn't primary evidence, but it shows someone thought it was true. Ferdinand's mother was Sarah Kirby (c1827-after 1880) who had several children out of wedlock. I don't know who Sarah's parents were, but she had a sister Mary Kirby (c1825-aft 1880) who also had several out of wedlock children.

  1. Joseph Turner (1848)

  2. Rebecca Turner (c1850)

  3. A. E. Turner (c1854)

  4. L. J. (or S. J.) Turner (c1857)

  5. Angeline Turner (1860)

  6. Ida Turner (c1879) grandchild, home in 1880, don't know who parents are.

Joseph Turner was born August 1848 (per 1900 census) in Marion Dist., SC. He was with his parents for the 1850 census ("Joseph" age 2) and with them in 1860 ("Joseph" age 12).

Like his parents, he was missing in 1870. There is a Joe Turner in 1870 Marion County with Lucy Lee, but that is probably her son Joseph Caulder (1848) instead though listed as a Turner. There is the possibility that it is Joseph Turner instead, but I don't think so. Kenneth Turner son of Martin M. Turner (c1820) was Lucy's son-in-law and was also in the household. Just in case: Moody's Township, Cat Fish PO, # 23/23 Lucy Lee 50 Farm Labor, $0 / 150 SC; Ken Turner 23 Farm Labor; Joe Turner 21 Farm Labor; Amanda 17 Farm Labor; Charlotte 9/12 born Dec.

Joseph Turner married Frances --- before ca 1875 in Marion Co, SC. She was born ca 1858/59 in SC, presumably Marion District. I don't know her maiden name.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Marion Co., SC. No other Turners were nearby: Kirby Township, # 95/96 Joseph Turner, 29 married, Farmer, SC-SC-SC; Franciss, 21 wife, Keeping house; Beanjman 5 son; Charty 2 daughter; Elizabeth Alen, 15, laborer in farm (listed as head of next household, obviously a numbering error).

Frances (---) Turner died sometime between 1887 and 1894, presumably in Marion Co., SC.

Joseph Turner married Sarah (---) ca 1894/95, probably in Marion Co., SC. She was born Jan 1865 in SC. I don't know her maiden name. She was married to a Mr. Lovett prior to her marriage to Joseph Turner for she had a son Perry Lovett (1885) with them on the 1900 census.

They are listed on the 1900 census in Marion Co., SC. No other Turners were nearby: Kirby Township 377/382 Joseph Turner, Head, Aug 1848, 51, married 5 years SC-SC-SC Farmer; Sarah wife Jan 1865 35, married 5 years, 3 children born, 1 living Farm Laborer; Corinda daughter Jan 1887 13; Willis Allen*, nephew July 1884 15; Luther nephew Apr 1886 14; Perry Lovett, step-son Mar 1885 15. All children listed "At school." * May not say "Allen" but something else, hard to make out.

Who are the two nephews living with them in 1900? Are they Joseph's nephews or Sarah's? Their surname looked like Allen at a glance, but on closer inspection may say Allus or something like that. He did have an Allen with him in 1880 and had other Allen neighbors.

I wasn't able to find Joseph Turner on the 1910 census in Marion or elsewhere. Nor was I able to find his wife Sarah. I found her son Perry Lovett in Wahee Township in 1910 with a new wife (Martha). No sign of Sarah though. I wasn't able to find Joseph in 1920 or 1930 either.

Rebecca Turner was born ca 1850 per her age on the 1850 census (1 month). She was home with her parents for that census ("Rebecca" age 1/12). In 1860 her parents had a female named "L. A. Turner" age 10 with them. That must be her for the age is right. If so, they either renamed her (not uncommon) or she had multiple middle names. (I'm not real sure it is "L.A." rather than "S.A." for they look so much alike.)

I didn't find her in 1870, nor any other member of this family that year.

A.E. Turner was born ca 1853/54 per her age on the 1860 census (6). On that record she was with her parents in Marion ("A. E. Turner" age 6, female). She, nor the rest of her family were found in 1870. I have no further record of her.

S.J. Turner was born ca 1856/57 per her age on the 1860 census (3). On that record she was with her parents in Marion ("S. J. Turner" age 3, female). She, nor the rest of her family were found in 1870. I have no further record of her. (It is possible she was "L. J." instead of "S. J." for it was hard to tell the difference.)

Angeline Turner was born ca 1860  per her age on the 1860 census (1 month). On that record she was with her parents in Marion ("A. Turner" age 1/12, female). She, nor the rest of her family were found in 1870. She was with her parents in 1880 ("Angialine" age 20). She was listed as married, but no husband was listed. There was a young girl Ida Turner age 1 in the house listed as granddaughter of her parents. She could be Angeline's daughter but I'm not certain of that.

The above was all I had on Angeline until I heard from Cherry Harper in 2008. Her ancestor was named Angeline Turner from Marion Co., SC. Hers was born 22 May 1860 and married Jehu Harper and moved to Tattnall Co., GA. She didn't know who Angeline's parents were. It seems to me that this is the only possible match, so I think her Angeline and Joel's daughter Angeline are one and the same.

They married ca 1884/85 (per 1900 census), presumably in Marion Co., SC. Jehu Harper was born May 1860 (per 1900 census) in SC. I wasn't able to find out who his parents were.

Jehu and Angeline are listed on the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census in Tattnall Co., GA. She died there on 2 Dec 1923. Her death certificate didn't list her father, but listed her mother as "Angeline Turner" which isn't correct, but is a typical death certificate problem. It lists her birth date as 22 May 1861 Marion Co., SC. That is off by one year, but that is also a typical death certificate problem.
