Revision History:
  • 7 Jan 2010 - Reformatted old page and re-wrote parts of it. Added much new information on Rachel and some of the children.

I don't know how I'm related to Rachel Turner, but probably a cousin at least.

Rachel Turner was born ca 1823/24 per her age on the 1850 census (26). She was born in Marion Dist., SC. I don't know who her parents were, but she may be a child of Robert Turner (c1794) for she lived two houses from him in 1850, and he did have an unidentified daughter her age on earlier census records.

Rachel Turner began having children in the mid 1840's, apparently out of wedlock. She is listed on the 1850 census in Marion next to Joel H. Turner (c1825), and two houses from Robert Turner (c1794), perhaps her father. This was somewhere on the west or south side of Catfish Creek in what later became Kirby township: # 1243/1248 Rachael Turner, 26, born Marion; John 4; Elizabeth 1. All listed as white.

Rachel is listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist., SC. She is living with John Bass (c1815), relationship unknown. It is possible he is the father of some of her children, but that is just a guess. They are just a few households from David S. Lane and wife Drucilla (or Druzilla) Turner, daughter of Joseph Turner (c1803): Catfish PO, # 1389/1376 John Bass, 45, Ditcher, $0 / 50 NC; Rachael Turner, 34 SC; John 15; Mary 9; Lydia 7; T. J. Turner 1 female. All listed as mulattoes.

Who was John Bass? He was born ca 1815 in NC per the 1860 census, so was he part of the Marion Dist., SC Bass family? There was a John Bass (c1795) in Marion in 1850, but he had a large family, and is 20 years too old to be this same person. There was a John Bass (c1815) in neighboring Robeson Co., NC in 1850 which could be the same man: Southern Division # 621/621 John Bass, 35, no occupation listed, born Robeson; Delila 30; Mary 20; James 2. All listed as mulattoes. I wasn't able to find that family in 1860, so that adds to the possibility that the two Johns are one and the same person.

Rachel appears to have married Joseph Whittington in the 1860's in Marion Dist., SC. He was born ca 1819/20 or ca 1829/30 in SC, presumably in Marion District. I wasn't able to find him in 1850 or 1860, perhaps he was a slave then and not listed by name (he was listed as black on the 1870 and 1880 census so he was probably a slave prior to the Civil War). Nathaniel Whittington (c1795-1881) of Marion was a slave owner.

They are on the 1870 census in Marion Co., SC next to William Lane (c1820): Marion township, # 86/87 Joe Whittington, 50 black, Farm Laborer, $ 0 / 25 SC; Rachel, 49 white, Farm Laborer; Lydia Turner, 20 mulatto, School Teacher; Mary Turner, 22 mulatto, At Home.

They were still in Marion for the 1880 census, but not near any other Turners: Marion township # 305/309 Joseph Whittington, Black, 50, Farm laborer SC-SC-SC; Rachel, mulatto, 48 wife, keeping house.

I wasn't able to find Rachel or her husband Joseph on the 1900 census. They may have both died by then.

Children of Rachel Turner. Rachel Turner had five children according to the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census. Those were all born prior to her marriage. It appears that she and Joseph Whittington had no children together.

  1. John C. Turner (1845)

  2. Elizabeth Turner (c1849)

  3. Mary M. Turner (1851)

  4. Lydia Turner (c1853)

  5. T. J. Turner (c1859)

John C. Turner was born 28 Nov 1845 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist., SC. He was with his mother for the 1850 census ("John" age 4) and with her in 1860 ("John" age 15).

John married Martha A. (---) in the 1860's, presumably in Marion Dist., SC. She was born ca 1848/49 in SC. I don't know her maiden name.

They are listed on the 1870 census in Marion Co., SC next to Solomon Turner (c1839), relationship unknown: Moody Township, # 72/72 John Turner, 25, farm Laborer, SC; Martha 21 Farm Laborer; Sarah 3; Martha 6/12, born March. All listed as white.

They are still in Marion for the 1880 census. They had moved a bit since 1870 now living in Marion township near Asbury Turner (1855) son of Willis Turner (1823): Marion Township, # 105/109 John C. Turner, 35 married, Farmer, SC-SC-SC; Martha A. 34 wife Keeping House; Sarah S. 12 daughter, Farm Laborer. All listed as mulattoes.

Martha A. (---) Turner died sometime between 1880 and 1900, presumably in Marion Co., SC.

John C. Turner is listed on the 1900 census in Lexington Co., SC in prison: Dutch Fork Township, # 291/306 (many names) ... John C. Turner, Prisoner, white, born Nov 1845, 54, widowed, SC-SC-SC, Farmer.

George Wiggins told me that John was in jail in the 1890's through late in 1900 for murder. I don't have any details.

After his release he returned home and married Mary Jane Abbott ca 1902/03 in Marion Co., SC. She was born 6 May 1884 in Marion Co., SC, daughter of Henry Abbott and Sarah (---).

They are listed on the 1910 census in Marion Co., SC. They aren't near any other Turners: Legette Township, no house or family numbers, John C. Turner, Head, 64 married twice, 7 years, SC-SC-SC, farmer; Mary J. wife, 25 married once 7 years, 4 children born, 4 living SC-NC-SC; Lawrence son 6; Martha E. daughter 4; John H. son 2; Ana L. daughter 9/12. All listed as white.

John C. Turner died 28 May 1912 and is buried at Centenary Methodist Church in Marion Co., SC.

I wasn't able to find Mary or the children on the 1920 or 1930 census.

Elizabeth Turner was born ca 1848/49 per her age on the 1850 census (1). For that census she was with her mother ("Elizabeth" age 1). She wasn't home in 1860, so probably dead by then as too young to be on her own.
Mary M. Turner was born September 1851 per the 1900 census. She was home with her mother for the 1860 census ("Mary" age 9) and with her in 1870 ("Mary" age 22).

She is listed on the 1880 census in Marion with a child of her own, but listed as single. No other Turners were nearby: Marion Township, # 57/61 Mary Turner, 25 single, Farm Laborer, SC-SC-SC; Rachel, 5 daughter. All listed as mulattoes.

They are on the 1900 census in Marion, again not listed near any other Turners: Legette Township, # 225/225 Mrs. Mary M. Turner, Head, Sept 1851, 48 single (written over with an M or W), 3 children born, 1 living, SC-SC-SC farm laborer; Rachel A. daughter Mar 1874, 26 single, farm laborer.

I didn't find Mary or her daughter Rachel on the 1910 census, nor in 1920.

Lydia Turner was born ca 1852/53 per her age on the 1860 census (7). She was with her mother for that census ("Lydia" age 7), and with her in 1870 ("Lydia" age 20).

I didn't find her in 1880, she probably had married by then, or died. I checked that census for any Lydia close to her in age. I found a possible match in Lydia Soles, wife of Lot Soles. They were in Marion Township in 1880. Her age matches, and she was listed as mulatto, so that matches. I wasn't able to find out anything else about this family, so I don't know if this is Lydia Turner or not. More research would help.

T. J. Turner was born ca 1858/59 per her age on the 1860 census (1). She was with her mother in 1860 ("T. J. Turner" age 1, female). She wasn't home in 1870 so probably dead by then as too young to be on her own.
