I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Willis Turner family, but I am very interested in him, he is probably my cousin. Willis Turner was born ca 1822/23 per his age on the 1850 census (27). He was born in Marion Dist., SC probably in the general area of Cat Fish Church where most of the other Turners were from. I don't know who his parents were, but he is probably a descendant of John Turner and Patience Smith who seem to be the progenitors of all the Cat Fish Creek Turners. Willis would have been about seven years old for the 1830 census. That would put him in the 5-9 age group (born ca 1820/25). Reuben Turner (1760/65), William Turner (c1768) and Robert Turner (c1794) each had one apparent son that age with them in 1830. William's children are identified so he probably isn't Willis's father. Reuben could be Willis's father, or his daughter Martha Turner (1784/90) could be his mother (she and her children appear to be with Reuben in 1830). Robert (son of Reuben) could also be Willis's father. More evidence is needed to determine which of these (if any) is Willis's parents. Willis Turner would have been about 17 for the 1840 census, so he should be enumerated in the 15-19 age group (born ca 1820/25). John Turner (c1805) had a male that age with him in 1840; Martha Turner (1784/90) had one also, as did Hugh E. Turner (c1794) (not likely, as he lived in Effingham area, present day Florence County). Willis Turner married Orphy Ann (---) before ca 1848, presumably in Marion Dist., SC. Orphy was born Dec. 1829 per the 1900 census. I don't know her maiden name, but she could be a Christmas for she lived with Jarrott C. Christmas for several decades and was listed as his cousin on the 1900 census. Jarrott was born ca 1839 a son of Nathan Christmas and Catherine (---). If he and Orphy were cousins, then she wouldn't be Nathan's daughter but rather a child of one of his brothers, sisters, nephews or nieces. Willis Turner and family are on the 1850 census in Marion District. Their next door neighbors are the Samuel Smith (c1784) family and the William Smith (c1829) family. Based on these, and other neighbors, they seemed to be living in the Temperance Hill area, or the area northwest of Maidendown Swamp, just south of Buck Swamp. There were no Turner's in this area back in the 1840 census, so Willis must have moved here in the 1840's. No other Turners listed nearby in 1850: # 1026/1031 Willis Turner, 27 Labourer, born Marion; Orpy 22; Evander 2; George 3/12. All listed as mulattoes. They had returned to the Cat Fish Creek area by the time of the 1860 census. They were listed very near Joel Turner, Robert Turner (c1794), Robert Turner (c1825) and others. This places them clearly in Kerby Township, probably somewhere just south or southwest of Latta, on the southern side of Catfish Creek (now Dillon County): Oak Grove PO, # 1353/1340 Willis Turner, 27 Farmer $0 / 300 SC; Ann 28; E. D. Turner 9 male; G. W. Turner 8 male; Jesse 6; A. Turner 4 male; Mary 3; Willis 5/12. All listed as mulattoes. For the Civil War, Willis Turner enlisted in Company D, 25th Regiment Infantry as a Private. He was listed by Sellers as "Willis Turner Jr", though I know of no other Willis Turner of age at that time. (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 635). I didn't find any official record of Willis Turner serving in the 25th Regiment or any other South Carolina units. Perhaps Sellers was mistaken, or perhaps Willis enlisted under a different given name. Willis Turner appears to have died prior to the 1870 census, perhaps as a result of the Civil War (though I found no record of it). His last child was born ca 1864/65 so he must have died sometime after that. Orphy is listed on the 1870 census with Jarrott C. Christmas, a cousin. The household consists of him, her, her children and several Christmas children who are not his, but must be related to them somehow. The may be the children of William G. Christmas (c1830) and Mary Foxworth of neighboring Williamsburg Dist., SC. I don't know how Jarrott and William are related (they could be brothers): Legette Township, Marion CH PO, # 211/211 Garot C. Christmas, 30 Farmer, $150/128 SC; Orapy Turner, 35 at home; Asberry 16 at home; Mary 14 at home; Harris 8; Margaret 5; Jesse Christmas 18 at home; Dodge 10 at home; George 8. Everyone was listed as white. Orphy was on the 1880 census, still living with Jarrott C. Christmas. This time she was listed as his wife, but I think that is an error for they were still together in 1900 but listed as cousins, both widowed. The Stephen Turner (c1810) family was about 10 houses away in 1880: Legette Township, # 201/201 Jarret C. Christmus, 47 married, Farmer, SC-SC-SC; Orphy, 48 wife, Keeping House; Mary 16 daughter; Margaret 13 daughter. Orphy is on the 1900 census in Marion Co., SC, still with Jarrott C. Christmas. They are both listed as widowed, and listed as cousins to each other. Thomas E. Turner, son of Stephen Turner (c1810) was just a few houses away: Legette Township, # 240/240 Jerr[written over] C. Christmas, Head, Oct 1835, 64, widowed, SC-SC-SC Farmer; Orphy Turner, Cousin, Dec 1829, 70 widowed, 10 children born, 4 living, Farm Laborer. Orpy Ann Turner died 22 Apr 1908 and was buried at the Reedy Creek Cemetery. She is listed as "Orphy Turner 4/22/1908 aged about 76 years. |
Children of Willis Turner and Orphy Ann (---). Willis Turner and Orphy Ann --- had 10 children per her 1900 census entry, but only 8 of them are known from the 1850 through 1880 census records. The other 2 may have died young. By the time of the 1900 census, only 4 of their children were still living according to her census information. |
Evander D. Turner was born ca 1847/48 per his age on the 1850 census (2). He was with his parents in 1850 ("Evander" age 2) and with them in 1860 ("E. D." age 9). Evander married Caroline (---) during the 1860's in Marion Co., SC. She was born ca 1848/49 per her age on the 1870 census (21). I don't know her maiden name. They are listed on the 1870 census in Marion. They were the only Turners in Bethea Township in 1870, and appear to be living with a black Huggins family, relationship unknown: Bethea Township, Reedy Creek PO, # 26/27 Sallie Huggins, 55 black, Farm Laborer, SC; Ellen 35 black, Farm Laborer; Martha 10 black, Farm Laborer, Thos 7/12, born Oct, black; Evanda Turner, 20 white, Farm Laborer; Caroline 21 white, Farm Laborer. Caroline was listed on the 1880 census with a Bethea family listed as a servant. She was listed as married but her husband wasn't with her. This census taker restarted the house and family numbers on each page so they aren't consecutive throughout the township: Bethea Township, page 24, # 1/1 Julius N. Bethea, white, 27 married, Farming, SC-SC-SC; Annie M. white, 24 wife Keeping house; Herbert S. white 6 son; Martha May, white 3 daughter; Earnest white 9/12 Oct. son; Caroline Turner, mulatto, 25 Servant, married. Evander is listed on the 1880 census also, living by himself. His age is off and he is listed as single, so this might not be the same person, but I don't know who else it could be: Kirby Township, # 266/266 Evander Turner, white, 24, single, Laborer on farm, SC-SC-SC. I didn't find Evander or Caroline on the 1900 census in Marion Co., SC nor elsewhere. I also checked 1910 with no luck. |
George W. Turner was born Feb 1850 per the 1900 census. He was with his parents in 1850 ("George" age 3/12) and with them in 1860 ("G. W." age 8). I didn't find George W. Turner on the 1870 census. He wasn't home with his widowed mother Orphy Turner that year nor elsewhere as far as I could determine. A lot of people are missing in 1870 Marion Co., SC. Worst census ever. George married Margaret (---) ca 1874/75 in Marion Co., SC. She was born Mar 1855 in SC, presumably in Marion Dist. I don't know her maiden name. They are listed on the 1880 census in Marion Co., SC. No other Turners are listed nearby: Marion Township, # 433/427 George Turner, 28 married, Farmer, SC-SC-SC; Margaret 24 wife Keeping House; Caroline 4 daughter. All are listed as white on this record. They are still in Marion Co., SC for the 1900 census. No other Turners were listed nearby: Moody Township, # 320/320 George Turner, Head, Feb 1850, 49, married 25 years, SC-SC-SC; Margarett Wife Mar 1855, 45 Married 25 years, 7 children born, 3 living; Jessie son Sep 1888 12; Tebby son May 1887 11. All listed as white, marked over as black. George W. Turner died between 1900 and 1910 in Marion Co., SC. I don't know where he is buried. Margaret is listed on the 1910 census in Marion with her daughter: Moody Township, Spring Branch Road, # 119/119 Miles F. Herring, Head, 38 married once 13 years SC-SC-SC; Carrie T. Wife 332 married once 13 years, 6 children born, 4 living; Pinckney, son 11; Mattie daughter 8; Adeline daughter 5; Grady son 2; Margaret Turner, Mother-in-law, 60 widowed, 7 children born, 2 living. I didn't find Margaret on the 1920 census, she may have died in the 1910's. I didn't find a death certificate either, so she probably died before 1915. |
Jesse Turner was born ca 1853/54 per his age on the 1860 census (6). He was home with his parents in 1860 ("Jesse" age 6). He wasn't home in 1870 unless he was the one listed as "Jesse Christmas" age 18 which sort of fits. I wasn't able to find him in 1880 either. |
Asbury Turner was born Aug 1855 per the 1900 census. He was with his parents in 1860 ("A." age 4) and with his mother in 1870 ("Asberry" age 16). Asbury married Mary W. Moore ca 1876/77, presumably in Marion Co., SC. She was born Apr 1857 in Pender Co., NC a daughter of Pettigrew Moore and Catherine Wells.. They are on the 1880 census in Marion County, just four houses away from John C. Turner a son of Rachel Turner. Asbury's brother Harris was living with them: Marion Township, # 101/105 Asbury Turner, 21, Farm Laborer SC-SC-SC; Mary 20 wife Keeps House NC-NC-NC; Harris C. 16 brother single Farm Laborer SC-SC-SC; Eldora 1 daughter SC-SC-NC. They moved to Pender Co., NC before 1900: Union Township, # 160/162 Asbury Turner, Head, Aug 1855 44 married 23 years, NC-NC-NC; Mary wife Apr 1857 43 married 23 years, 7 children born 7 living; Dorah daughter Dec 1878 21; Willis son Jul 1882 17; Walter son Oct 1885 14; Albert son Apr 1887 12; Winnie dau May 1888 12; Vance son Mar 1892 8; Allen son Feb 1897 3. They are still in Pender for the 1910 census: Union Township # 119/120 Berry Turner, Head, 55 married once 32 years, SC-SC-SC; Mary W. wife 54 married once 32 years, 7 children born, 7 living NC-NC-NC; Albert son 22 single NC-NC-NC; Winnie A. daughter 21; Vance son 14; Allen son 12. They were still in Pender for the 1920 census: Union Township, # 164/171 Asburry Turner, Head, 63 married, NC-NC-NC; Mary W. wife 63; Vance son 24. Asbury Turner died sometime between 1920 and 1922. I didn't find a death certificate for him. Mary W. Moore Turner died on 30 Jun 1922 in Wilmington, New Hanover Co., NC. She is buried at Watha, NC (probably a town, not a cemetery name). |
Mary Turner was born ca 1856/57 per her age on the 1860 census (3). She was with her parents in 1860 ("Mary" age 3) and home in 1870 ("Mary" age 14) and in 1880 ("Mary" age 16). I don't know what happened to her after 1880, who she might have married, when or where she died. |
Willis Turner was born 1860 in Marion Dist., SC. He was with his parents for the 1860 census ("Willis" age 5 months). He wasn't with his mother in 1870. I found no further record of him. |
Harris C. Turner was born 11 Jun 1862 (per Tonya Perry) in Marion Dist., SC. He was home with his mother in 1870 ("Harris" age 8) and with his brother Asbury in 1880 ("Harris C." age 16). Thanks to Tonya Perry for sharing information on Harris Turner's family. Harris C. Turner married Minnie Turner ca 1889/90 in Marion Co., SC. She was born 17 Oct 1873 in Marion Co., SC a daughter of Kenneth T. Turner (1848) and Amanda Caulder. Kenneth is a son of Martin M. Turner (c1820) and Eliza (---). Harris and Minnie were probably cousins to some degree. Harris, like his brother Asbury, moved to Pender Co., NC before 1900 and is listed there on that census: Union Township, # 208/210 Harris C. Turner, Head, Jan 1862, 37 married 10 years, SC-SC-SC; Minnie wife Apr 1875 25, married 10 years, 4 children born, 4 living, SC-NC-NC; Maud daughter July 1892 7 SC-SC-SC; Tracy daughter May 1893 7; Marvin son Apr 1895 5; Thad son Jan 1896 4. All listed as white. Harris C. Turner died on 1 Aug 1904 (per Tonya Perry), either in Pender Co., NC or back in Marion Co., SC, not sure which. He is buried at the Turner Cemetery near Latta, SC. Minnie and the children are listed on the 1910 census in Marion Co., SC next door to her parents: Kirby Township, # 169/169 Minnie Turner, Head, 38 widowed, 7 children born, 6 living SC-SC-SC; Maud, daughter 18; Tracy son 16; Marvin son 14; Thad son 12; Covington, son 10; Lamar son 8. All listed as mulattoes. They were in neighboring Dillon Co., SC for the 1920 census: Manning Township, # 474/481 Minnie Turner Head, 45 widowed, SC-SC-SC; Maud daughter 25; Tracy son 23; Marvin son 22. All listed as white. I wasn't able to find Minnie on the 1930 census. Minnie Turner Turner died on 6 Mar 1947 in Marion or Dillon County, and is buried at the Turner Cemetery in Dillon County. |
Margaret Turner was born ca 1864/65 in Marion Dist., SC. She was with her mother in 1870 ("Margaret" age 5) and with her in 1880 ("Margaret" age 13). I don't know what became of her after 1880. |
