I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Stephen Turner, but I think he is a cousin to some degree. Special thanks to Treasa Bortree, Mavis Jackson, Tonya Perry, Donald W. Turner and others for information shared on Stephen Turner and some of his descendants. Stephen Turner was born ca 1809/10 per his age on the 1860 census (50). His 1870 entry gives his age as 64 (born ca 1805/06), while his 1880 entry gives 64 again (ca 1815/16). I don't know which of these is most accurate. Donald W. Turner gives Stephen's birth date as 24 Jan 1813 which fits right in there, but I don't know the primary source for that date. Donald W. Turner told me of his family tradition about the origin of this family:
The above is very interesting, but Stephen himself was born in South Carolina as proven by the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census. His own 1880 census entry shows that both his parents were born in South Carolina as well. Family tradition often gets mixed up over the generations, and this may be such a case. The story may be absolutely accurate, but not about Stephen Turner, but rather someone further back in the family tree, perhaps his grandparents, or perhaps someone related to the Turners via another side of the family. No way to be certain. Stephen Turner's parents are unknown. He lived in the Cat Fish Creek Community in his younger days, and that suggests he is a descendant of John Turner and Patience Smith who were the progenitors of the Turners of that area. They are not his parents, but could be his grandparents or great grandparents. No primary records have been found indicating who Stephen's parents were, not showing him related to any other Turner. He did live fairly close to Daniel Turner (c1796) in 1860, and Daniel named one of his sons "Stephen" so that may indicate a close relationship between them, brothers perhaps, or uncle - nephew, or at least cousins. Census analysis is difficult due to the uncertainty of Stephen's birth date. He may have been around for the 1810 census either about four or just under a year old. William Turner (c1768) had two sons under 10 with him that year who have yet to be identified. Reuben Turner (1760/65) also had two sons that age in 1810, also unidentified. Amos Turner had one son that age, but his family is well documented and Stephen isn't his son. Amos lived in "western" Marion District in what is now Florence Co., SC, and isn't related to the Cat Fish Creek Turners. For the 1820 census Stephen would be anywhere from age 14 (if born ca 1805/06) to age four (if born ca 1815/16). That means he could fit in two different age groups on this census, either under 10 (ca 1810/20) or aged 10-15 (ca 1804/10). John Turner (1765) had two boys aged 10-15, but they are both positively identified. Martha Turner (1784/90) had three boys under 10 and one aged 10-15. Of those only one is identified: Martin M. Turner (c1820). Reuben Turner (1760/65) had two boys 10-15, neither identified. William Turner (1768) had two boys under 10 (both identified) and one aged 10-15. By 1830 Stephen Turner would be anywhere from 14 to 24 years old. He wasn't listed as a head of household, so he was probably still home with parents or other relatives then. He could fit in several age groups: 10-14 (ca 1815/20); 15-19 (ca 1810/15) and 20-29 (ca 1800/10). None of the Turners in the Cat Fish area had sons in their 20's, nor in the 15-19 age group. Reuben Turner (1760/65), Robert Turner (c1794) and William Turner (c1768) each had one male age 10-14 with them in 1830. Robert wasn't married early enough to have a child that age, so whomever that is with Robert probably isn't his own son, but a brother or nephew or something. William's child that age is positively identified. That leaves Reuben. In his case it is probably his grandson Martin M. Turner (c1820) listed in that age group, but one can't be positive. The bottom line is that census analysis doesn't help to identify Stephen's parents. He could be a son of Reuben Turner (1760/65) and Dorothy Martin, or of Reuben's daughter Martha Turner (1784/90) who had several children out of wedlock. He probably isn't a son of William Turner (1768) and Catherine Martin for their children were named in a series of deeds in the 1840's and 1850's, and Stephen wasn't among them. Stephen could be a son of John Turner (1765) and Juda Hathcock. More research may help narrow it down some. Stephen Turner married Mary Ann Cooper sometime before 1833. Her maiden was shared with me by several of Stephen's descendants. I don't know what the proof of it is, nor who her parents were. The only record I've found on the subject is the death certificate of son Stephen (Jr.) which lists his mother as Mary "Barnes." Of course death certificates are notoriously inaccurate, but sometimes it is all we have to go on. Mary Ann was born ca 1814/15 per her age on the 1860 census (45). Her later census records were close: 54 in 1870 (ca 1815/16), and 62 in 1880 (ca 1817/18). I don't know who her parents were. There were Barnes and Cooper families in Marion early on. See my Barnes pages for more on that family. I haven't researched the Coopers as I'm not related as far as I'm aware. Stephen Turner is listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist., SC. He is just a couple of houses from Jonah Collins (1774) the father-in-law of Daniel Turner (c1796). Francis H. Capps was also nearby, his son Francis (Jr.) married one of Daniel Turner's daughters. This was in the region that later became Rowell Township. Stephen was listed between Nathan Evans and W. G. Smith (Willis G. Smith). (1835/40) 2-Jane Turner (c1839) daughter 0 Slaves For some reason, Stephen Turner and family were not listed on the 1850 census. They might have been missed by the census taker, or perhaps had moved away briefly, though I did not find them anywhere else that year. They are not the only Turners missing in 1850 who should be listed somewhere in Marion District that year. They were "back" in Marion for the 1860 census. The appear to be in the area that later became Legette Township, so they moved sometime between 1840 and 1860. Stephen's son William was next door with his family. Elizabeth Turner (c1835) was two houses away, she may be Stephen's daughter. This census showed that Stephen was a landowner with $300 worth of real estate. His other land owning neighbors include: Jesse Godbold, Moses Martin, John Herrin and James Collins. Daniel Turner (c1796) was 18 households away. Not exactly next door, but fairly close by: Marion PO, # 2020/1990 Steven Turner, 50, Farmer $300/200 SC; Mary 45; Jane 21; Telatha 19; Susan 17; Steven 15; Catharine 12; Hanibal 8; Thos 5. Everyone was listed as mulattoes. Stephen was too old for Civil War service. Stephen and family were listed in Legette Township for the 1870 census. James Turner age 46 and wife Telatha (possibly Stephen's daughter) were next door to Stephen. Stephen's son William Turner was just a few houses away: Legette Township, Marion C.H. PO, # 56/56 Stephen Turner 64 Farmer $90 / 107 SC; Mary Ann D. 54 Keeping House; Jane 33; Stephen Jr. 21; Susan 16; Catherine 14; Hamilton P. 12; Thomas 16. Everyone was listed as white this time. For the 1880 census Stephen Turner was still in Legette Township. Stephen's son Stephen Jr. was next door to him. Orpy, the widow of Willis Turner was not very far away: Legette Township # 212/212 Stephen Turner Sr. 64 married, Farming SC-SC-SC; Mary A. 62 wife Keeping House; Tolathy 35 daughter, single, Laborer; Mariah 30 daughter single, Laborer; Susan 25 daughter single Laborer; Cathren 23 daughter single Laborer; Ellen 9 daughter; John 7 grandson; James 5 grandson; Noah 2 grandson. Everyone was listed as white. Apparently, both Stephen and Mary Ann died between 1880 and 1900. I didn't find them on the 1900 census in Legette Township, nor in anywhere else in Marion County. Children of Stephen Turner and Mary Ann Cooper. Stephen Turner and Mary Ann Cooper had at least nine children, eight of whom are proven by the 1860 through 1880 census, and one (William Turner) as told to me by Donald Turner. There may be others as well. For instance, there is a James Turner who died in the Civil War. After his death his final pay was delivered to "Mary Turner" his mother in Marion District. I haven't found any other Mary Turner who this might be, so it could easily be Mary wife of Stephen.

William Turner was born 30 Dec 1833 (per Donald Turner) in Marion Dist., SC. This birth date doesn't agree with any of his census entries but is close to some of them. His 1860 entry gives his age as 30 (born ca 1829/30), while 1870 gives 38 (ca 1831/32), 1880 gives 48 (ca 1831/32). The 1900 census gives his age as 72 and gives his birth month and year as December 1827. Special thanks to Donald W. Turner for sharing information on this family. William is seemingly home with his parents for the 1840 census aged under 5 (ca 1835/40). He wasn't found in 1850 (nor were his parents). William Turner married Elizabeth J. Cribb before ca 1853. She was born April 1834 per the 1900 census, but the year is probably off a little, it is more likely she was born in 1835 or '36 according to all her earlier census records. She is a child of John Cribb and Lydia (---). William Turner and family were listed on the 1860 census next door to his parents in Marion Dist., SC: Marion C. H. PO, # 2021/1991 Wm Turner 30 Farmer $ 0 / 200 SC; Elisabeth 25; Telatha 7; Wm 5; Robt 5/12. Everyone was listed as mulattoes. For the Civil War, William Turner may have served. A record was found for "W. Turner" in Company E, 23rd Regiment (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 613). That was the same unit that William's brother Stephen served in, so this could be him. There was also a William Turner listed in Gregg's Battery, Co. D, Manigault's Battalion Artillery (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 619). There was yet another William Turner listed in the group of "militia last called into service" (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 646). However, this group was mainly made up of those who had previously been considered too old or too young to serve, so probably isn't this William, as his age was just right for service. William Turner and family were listed on the 1870 census, still in Legette Township. He was only a few houses from his parents. He was next door to Abraham W. Price whose daughter Martha Ellen Price had married an unknown Turner and had several children with him, some apparently out of wedlock: Legette Township, Marion C.H. PO, # 61/61 William Turner, 38 Farmer $ 0 / 0 SC; Elizabeth J. 34 Keeping House; James F. 10; William D. 8. Everyone listed as white. They are still in Marion Co., SC for the 1880 census, but this time they weren't listed near any of their close relatives: Legette Township, # 294/294 William Turner, 48 married, farmer, SC-SC-SC; Elizabeth J. 44 wife Keeping House; James F. 20 son Laborer; William D. 18 Son At Home; Emma Owens, 5 adopted daughter. William Turner and family were still in Legette for the 1900 census. This time they were listed next door to his brother Thomas E. Turner: Legette Township # 248/248 William Turner, Head, Dec 1827, 72 married 51 years, born SC-SC-SC, Farm Laborer; Lizzie Wife Apr 1834, 66 married 51 years, 6 children born, 2 living, Farm Laborer. William Turner died on 14 Jul 1905 (per Donald W. Turner) in Marion Co, SC. Elizabeth died sometime after 1900. Donald W. Turner says his dad is sure that William and Elizabeth are buried at Ariel's Crossroads Baptist Church:

Unknown Daughter born ca 1835/40. She was listed with the Stephen Turner family on the 1840 census aged under 5 (ca 1835/40). This is almost certainly Elizabeth Turner born ca 1834/35 who was living just two houses from Stephen's family in 1860, residing with another family: Marion C.H. PO, # 2022/1992 William Carter 65 white, Farmer $200 SC; Elisabeth 55 white; Elisabeth Turner 25 mulatto. I didn't find this Elizabeth back on the 1850 census (same as with her parents), nor did I find her in 1870. She may have married someone or died by then. |

Jane Turner was born ca 1838/39 per her age on the 1860 census (21). She was seemingly with her parents for the 1840 census aged under 5 (ca 1835/40), and missing in 1850 same as they. She was with them in 1860 ("Jane" age 21) and with them in 1870 ("Jane" age 33). She was not home in 1880 so perhaps married or dead by then. |

Telatha Turner was born ca 1840/41 per her age on the 1860 census (19). She is missing in 1850 same as they were. She was not with her parents in 1870, but I think she is next door in the household of James Turner, either her husband or a relative (or both). James Turner was born ca 1829/30 per his age in 1860 (30) or ca 1823/24 per his age in 1870 (46). I don't know who his parents were, but he and Telatha were undoubtedly cousins to some degree. As noted above, they are on the 1870 census next door to her parents: Legette Township, Marion C.H. PO, # 55/55 James Turner 46 Farmer, SC; Telatha 26 Keeping House. All listed as white. James Turner appears to have died before 1880 because Telatha was back home with her parents then ("Tolathy" 35, daughter). She was listed as single and not widowed, so perhaps she and James were never actually married, or this is just a census error and she really was widowed. There are several young children in the household who are grandchildren of Stephen Turner, some, or all whom could be Telatha and James' children. They were Ellen (c1870/71), John (c1872/73), James (c1874/75), and Noah (c1877/78). Noah was Susan's child as proven by the 1900 census. The older ones could be Telatha's, but I don't know that for certain except for John. Ellen isn't Susan's for she was with Susan in 1900, but listed as a niece. Therefore she may be Telatha's child. I've assigned the others to Susan for now, pending evidence to the contrary. I wasn't able to find Telatha on the 1900 census. She was listed on the 1910 census in neighboring Horry with her son John Turner and family: Bayboro Township, # 311/311 Johnie Turner, Head, 36 married once 14 years SC-SC-SC Farmer; Lucy wife 33 married once 14 years, 5 children born 5 living; Oscar son 13; Louie son 12; Lorenzo son 10; Lizzie daughter 6; Johnie son 4; Telatha Mother 65 widowed. There was another entry on the 1910 census in Horry that could also be Telatha, but I'm not positive: Gallivants Ferry Township, # 249/250 Lathy Turner, Head, 60 widowed, 1 child born 1 living, SC-SC-SC. I didn't find her on the 1920 census. She may have died by then. |

Stephen Turner was born 8 Mar 1844 (per death certificate) in Marion Dist., SC. He was missing in 1850 same as his parents. In 1860 he was with them ("Steven" age 15). For the Civil War, Stephen Turner enlisted as a Private in Company E, 23rd Regiment (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 613). Stephen Turner was home with his parents for the 1870 census in Legette Township ("Stephen Jr." age 21). Stephen married Mary Moore ca 1870 (after the census was made in June, apparently). Mary Moore was born Feb 1858 per the 1900 census, born in SC, presumably in Marion District. I haven't seen proof of her maiden name yet. Some descendants claim she was a Barnes. I'm also a Barnes researcher, but have not found a Mary Barnes who this could be. The death certificate of her son James Turner lists his mother as Mary Barnes. Other descendants claim she was a Moore. I did find Mary Moore her age who is a daughter of George W. Moore and Sarah (---). I don't know if that is the same Mary or not, but she fits. Stephen Turner and family were listed on the 1880 census in Legette Township. They had an "Adopted son" (William G. Turner) with them. I don't know if he was a relative or not. Quite often "adopted" children in those days were typically orphaned nieces or nephews. William G. Turner could be a son of Stephen's sister Telatha Turner who married James Turner. That is just a guess though. Treasa Bortree said that the child was not a relative, but was given to Stephen and Mary after both of his parents died. That could be true, but the child wouldn't take the Turner surname unless there was an official adoption, so there may be records on that somewhere. They were listed next door to his parents for the 1880 census: Legette Township, # 211/211 Stephen Turner Jr. 31 married, Cooper, SC-SC-SC; Mary 21 wife Keeping House; James T. 5 son; William G. 5 adopt-son. Stephen and family were still in Legette Township for the 1900 census. This census shows that Mary had given birth to 12 children, and only 10 of those were still living at that time: Legette Township, # 483/493 Steve Turner, Head, Mar 1849, 51, married 30 years, SC-SC-SC Farmer; Mary wife Feb 1858 42, 12 children born, 10 living; Julius son Dec 1885 14; Arnie son Aug 1886 13; Perlie G. Son May 1889 11; Artimus son Aug 1891 8; Lelean G. Son Jun 1893 7; Mary L. Dau Feb 1895 5; John F. Son Apr 1897 3; Addie Dau Apr 1898 2. They moved to neighboring Horry Co., SC by the time of the 1910 census: Gallivants Ferry Township, # 150/151 Stephen T. Mary Moore Turner, wife of Stephen Turner died in 1910, per her tombstone at Centenary Methodist Church. It lists her as Mary Turner, 1857-1910. I don't know if she died in Horry or back in Marion County. In 1920, Stephen was living with his brother Thomas back in Marion Co., SC: Legette Township, # 32/32 Thomas Turner, Head, 63 Married, SC-SC-SC; Bettie wife 53; Archie son 19; Ethel daughter 15; Stephen, brother 73 widowed. Stephen is with his daughter Cora for the 1930 census in Marion Co., SC: Marion Township # 103/104 Willie Cowl? Head 32 married at age 19 SC-SC-US; Corra wife 26 married at age 16 SC-SC-SC; Willie H. son 9; Minnie? daughter 6; Stephen Turner Father-in-law 86 widowed, married at age 21. Stephen Turner died on 19 Aug 1932 (per death certificate). His parents are listed as Stephen Turner and Mary Barnes. Her birth place is listed as Florence Co., SC. His tombstone, also at Centenary, says Steve Turner 1843-1932. |

Susan Turner was born 5 Sep 1846 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist., SC. She was not listed on the 1850 census (her entire family was missing that year). She was with her parents for the 1860 census ("Susan" age 17), and with them in 1870 ("Susan" age 16), and still home in 1880 ("Susan" age 25). Susan Turner began having children in the 1870's or early 1880's, though she never married. In 1880 there were several children listed with her and her parents: Ellen Turner (c1870/71), John (c1872/73), James (c1874/75), and Noah (c1877/78). Noah was Susan's child as proven by the 1900 census. Ellen was with her in 1900 but listed as a niece. John belongs to sister Telatha. The others could be Susan's. Susan is listed on the 1900 census in Marion Co., SC: Legette Township, # 499/499 Mrs. Susan Turner, head, "about 44" single, 6 children born, 5 living, SC-SC-SC Farmer; Noie son Feb 1882 18; Alice daughter May 1883 17; G. Sumter son, Aug 1885 14; Ellen niece, Oct 1874 25. Susan was listed on the 1910 census in Marion. Daughter Alice and her children were living with her. She was also a single mother: Marion Township, Marion Town, (no street name given), # 368/379, Susan Turner, Head, 50 widowed, 2 children born, 1 living SC-SC-SC, Laborer - Working Out; Alice daughter 27 single, 4 children born, 4 living, Laborer - Working Out; Lolla G.Daughter 9; Henry G.Son 6; Marvin G.Son 2; Docy G.Daughter 11/12. They were still in Marion for the 1920 census: Marion City, (no street name given), # 69/74 Susie T. Turner, Head, 76 widowed, SC-SC-SC; Alice Daughter 40 widowed; John son; Desie daughter 11. Susan is listed on the 1930 census with her daughter Alice in Marion Co., SC: Rowell Township, # 98/103 Dunkin C. Collins, Head, 43 married at age 34, SC-SC-SC, Farmer; Alice wife 47 married at age 30; Susan Turner, Mother-in-law, 81 widowed, married at age 20. Susan Turner died 19 Sep 1941 in Marion Co, SC. She is buried at Ariel Baptist Church in Marion County. Her stone lists: Susan Turner 9-5-1846 - 9-19-1941. I didn't find a death certificate for Susan Turner. |

Catherine Emma Turner was born 24 Feb 1848 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist., SC. She was not listed on the 1850 census, nor was the rest of her family. She was with them on the 1860 census ("Catharine" age 12), and home in 1870 ("Catherine" age 14), and still home in 1870 ("Cathren" age 23). Special thanks to Cathy Buchanan who shared some good information on Catherine's family. Sometime after the 1880 census Catherine Emma Turner married a Mr. Holden, presumably in Marion Co., SC. There were several families of that surname in Marion County at the time. Whomever he was, he was probably closely related to Mary Jane Holden who married Catherine's brother H. Preston Turner ca 1884. I was unable to find her on the 1900 census in Marion Co., SC or elsewhere. She was on the 1910 census in Marion living with her daughter: Legette Township (no house or family numbers given) Charlie Richardson, Head, 38 Married once 18 years, SC-SC-SC; Senda wife 34 married once 18 years, 6 children born, 6 living; Loula Daughter 15; George R. Son 11; Richard Son 9; Minnie Lee Daughter 7; Eddie L. Son 5; Charlie E. Son 1 1/12 (or 4/12); Emma Holdin Mother-in-law 68 widowed, 3 children born 2 living; Walter Demery? Hired hand 18. Sometime after 1900 Catherine Emma Turner Holden married a Mr. Richardson either in Marion or in Horry Co., SC. I don't know his given name. He died prior to the 1910 census. Emma is listed on the 1910 census in neighboring Horry Co., SC with her daughter: Gallivants Ferry Township, # 194/194 J. Charley Richardson, Head, 51 married SC-SC-SC; Lindy wife 43; Raymond son 21; Dick son 18; Minnie daughter 16; Eddie son 14; Charlie Jr. son 12; Henry son 10; Desa daughter 5; James son 4 4/12; Lindie daughter 1 6/12; Emma Mother 82 widowed. Catherine Emma Turner Holden Richardson died on 27 Dec 1928 either in Horry or Marion. She is buried at Centenary Cemetery in Marion Co., SC, her stone has her name as "Catherine Emma Turner Richardson" with birth and death dates (thanks to Cathy Buchanan for sharing that information). I couldn't find a death certificate for her in Marion or Horry or elsewhere. Catherine had three children according to the 1910 census, two of whom were still living at that time. Only one of the children has been identified, daughter Malinda "Linda" whom she was living with in 1910 and 1920. Her daughter Linda's death certificate lists her parents as "Charlie Richardson" and "Emma Holden." Charlie was Linda's husband not her father and Holden wasn't her mother's maiden name (typical problem with death certificates). No information was lsited. There wasn't another Charlie Richardson who could have been Emma's 2nd husband, or at least none I'm aware of. |

Anna Turner was born ca 1849/50 in Marion Dist., SC. Like her parents, she was not listed on the 1850 census in Marion. She died 27 Apr 1853 per an Obituary in the Marion Star:

Hannibal Preston Turner was born 16 Nov 1850 (per his tombstone) in Marion Dist., SC. He was home with is parents for the 1860 census ("Hanibal" age 8) and home in 1870 ("Hamilton P." (sic) age 12). Preston Turner married Celia O. (---) between 1870 and 1880, presumably in Marion Co., SC. She was born ca 1859/60 per her age in 1880 (20). I don't know her maiden name. They are on the 1880 census in Marion Co., SC just a few houses from his brother Thomas. There is a Mary G. Turner age 10 living with them. I don't know who she is. She could be a niece, or perhaps their own child if 10 months old instead of 10 years (though clearly listed as 10 years). She could be a younger sister to Preston or perhaps Celia: Legette Township, # 119/119 Preston Turner, mulatto, 25 Laborer, SC-SC-SC; Cely O.20 white, Laborer; Mary G. white 10. Celia O. (---) Turner died sometime between 1880 and 1884 in Marion Co., SC. Preston Turner married Mary Jane Holden ca 1883/84. Her maiden name is proven by her tombstone, and this marriage date is based on the 1900 census, listing them as being married 16 years. She was born 22 Jan 1867 (per tombstone). She is a child of Joseph W. Holden and Ethelinda (---). They were listed on the 1900 census in Legette Township, but not listed too close to any other Turners: Legette Township # 159/159 H. Press Turner, Head, May 1860 40 married 16 years SC-SC-SC Farmer; Mary Jane wife Jan 1862 38, 6 children born 6 living; Julia A. daughter Mar 1886 14; Eva Jane Daughter Nov 1887 12; Wardie son July 1889 10; Robie son Oct 1894 5; Lula daughter Nov 1895 4; Elbert son July 1897 2. They were listed on the 1910 census in Marion Co., SC, Legette Township, no house or family numbers given: Hanibal P. Hannibal Preston Turner died 6 Sep 1940 and his wife Mary died 24 Aug 1943. Both are buried at the Centenary Methodist Church Cemetery. His stone gives this information: Hannibal Preston Turner 11-16-1850 - 9-16-1940. Her stone gives: Mary Jane Holden Turner 1-22-1869 - 8-24-1943. Several of their children and other relatives are buried at the same cemetery. Her death certificate gives her birth date as 22 Jan 1868. Thomas Edward Turner was born 7 Dec 1854 (per his tombstone) in Marion Dist., SC. He was with his parents for the 1860 census ("Thos." age 5) and with them in 1870 ("Thomas" age 16). Thomas married Elizabeth "Bettie" Campbell ca 1880. Her maiden name was told to me by Mavis Jackson, and is also proven by her tombstone. She was born 26 May 1867 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist., SC. Her father isn't known, but her mother is Mary J. (---). See my Campbell pages for more on the Marion County Campbells. Thomas and wife were listed on the 1880 census in Legette Township, just a few households from his brother Preston Turner: Legette Township # 124/124 Thomas Turner, 20 Laborer SC-SC-SC; Elizabeth 15 wife.
