I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to the William Turner family, but he is probably an uncle of mine.

Special thanks to Debbie Turner Smith for information shared on this family.

William Turner was born ca 1767/68 per his age on the 1850 census (82). That census also gives his birth place as Marion Dist., SC which is probably not correct. Disregarding the fact that Marion didn't yet exist in 1768 (it was still part of Craven County), he was probably born in Halifax (now Martin) Co., NC instead as his parents were still there as late as 1769. Of course it is possible he was born in SC instead, but we only have the 1850 census record as a source for that.

William is a proven son of John and Patience Turner based on deeds and various court records. William was very young when the family left NC and moved to the Catfish Creek region in what is now Marion Co., SC (and Dillon Co., SC). This area became Georgetown District in 1769 and became Marion District in 1800.

William Turner was not listed on the 1790 census as a head of household. He was about 22 then, but not yet married. He was probably still with his parents, one of the 10 "free colored" persons in their household.

Reuben Turner, William Turner and Samuel Hussey signed a petition in 1794, though it was labeled as residents of Lynch's and Jeffery's Creek. That is in the region that later became Florence County, not particularly close to Catfish Creek. There was an unrelated set of Turners down there which included ones named William and Reuben, so is this our Turners? It could be. The presence of Samuel Hussey suggests these are ours since he was their brother-in-law, Perhaps this petition also included people who didn't actually live in that area. (Pee Dee Queue, Vol. XXIX, No. 2, Mar-Apr 2005. p. 1.)

William Turner married Catherine Martin at some point, perhaps before 1800. She was born ca 1765/84 (per 1810 census). She may be a sister, or somehow closely related to John Martin and Dorothy Martin who married William's siblings. I don't know who any of their parents were. (See the page for William's parents John and Patience for a little bit of Martin family analysis in the section on John Martin and wife Penny Turner.) Catherine's name is proven by an 1860 court record pertaining to their son Martin W. Turner.

William was not listed on the 1800 census in Marion District. He was about 32 years old then. He could have still been with his parents. John Turner's household contained five "free colored" persons, all ages and sexes lumped together. William could have been one of those. There was a William Turner listed in Marion Dist., SC in 1800, but it isn't him. The age doesn't match (born ca 1774/84), and he is in the area that later became Florence County. That was a different group of Turners in that area, and that William was listed near other members of that family.

There is a William Turner in neighboring Georgetown District, Kingston County (which is now Horry County). This could very easily be him. The age matches and he and his apparent wife had no children which suggests they just married. I don't know who else this could be, so I bet it is William and Catherine. There is some room for doubt though. If this is them we can narrow Catherine's birth date even further to ca 1765/74. I'm not familiar with any of their neighbors in 1800 (William Carter, Enos Lay and several Prince families), so I don't know what section of Horry they were living in at this tiem.

William Turner was listed on the 1810 census in Marion District. He wasn't listed near any known relatives. His next door neighbors were David Marce (Mace?) and John Guntor (Gunter). My uncle Samuel Johnson was just a few houses away. I don't know where they were exactly, but somewhere within a few miles of Temperance Hill, but probably not in the Catfish community where the rest of William's family lived.

William Turner was listed on the 1811 tax list in Marion, and taxed 17 cents.

William Turner was listed on the 1814 tax list in Marion, and taxed 48 cents.

On 3 Oct 1814 William Turner of Marion District, "late of NC" sold John Newson a Negro girl Elizar age 7 years. Signed by William Turner, witnessed by Richard Grantham and Mathew Dickinson. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book F page 324).

Is the above deed the same William Turner? John Newsom is listed on the 1800 and 1810 census in Marion District. He was a slave owner per both of those census records. He wasn't listed near any Turners either time, but he was clearly in the same general area that our William Turner lived, based on some of his other neighbors in 1800 and 1810. There was no Richard Grantham on the 1800 census, but there was a James and John Grantham listed very close to John Newsom. There were no Granthams on the 1810 census in Marion. There were two Richard Granthams in Robeson Co., NC in 1800. That bordered Marion Dist., SC at that time. I couldn't find him in 1810. There were no Dickinson families in Marion in 1800 or 1810 either. Pending evidence to the contrary I'd say this deed has to be our William Turner. This deed tells us two things, one that he must have lived in North Carolina briefly before 1814, and two, he was a slave owner for a brief time.

On 29 Aug 1816, William Turner was named as a debtor to the estate of Robert Hodges, deceased. (Marion Co, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 pg 182 as published in the Pee Dee Queue).

On 7 Nov 1816 William Turner of Marion District, Blacksmith agreed to take Lewis Mills in as an apprentice. Lewis Mills had no mother or father or guardian "in this state." Mills bound himself to William Turner until 7 May 1820 to learn the craft of blacksmith and to provide food, drink, lodging, clothing, education, etc. William Turner signed and Lewis Mills signed with a mark. There were no witnesses, they signed before C. Daniel, Q.U. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book G page 26).

Who is Lewis Mills? The 1800 census for Marion shows a Ferebee Mills (bef 1755) with a large family. She was an apparent widow with several children at home. She was the only one of that surname in Marion District at the time. She was still there for the 1810 census with only one son at home then, aged 10-15 (ca 1794/1800). That cold be Lewis Mills. There was also a Sarah Mills in Marion in 1810, she had one boy at home under 10 (ca 1800/10). That could be Lewis instead. I'm not aware of any relationship between the Turner and Mills families.

On 14 Feb 1817 William Turner sold a Negro girl named Lizar, age 10, to Mary Rowe for $300. William signed. Witnessed by Benjamin Lewis. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book G page 66).

Is the above Lizar age 10 the same person as Elizar age 7 that William sold to John Newsom three years earlier? The name and ages are compatible. If so, I didn't find a deed where William reacquired her.

On 5 Jan 1819 John Powers and Sarah Powers (William's sister) sold 100 acres on Catfish to John Bridges for $300. The land was bounded on the west by William Turner, south by Barnabas Hathcock and John Martin, east by William Bryan and John Turner. John and Sarah both signed the deed with a mark. Witnesses were Thomas Jones and Francis Bridges. Sarah relinquished her dower rights before Barfield Moody, QU on 22 Jan 1819. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book H page 109).

On 16 Jan 1819 William Turner was mentioned as an adjoining land owner in a deed between the heirs of Samuel Hussey (William's brother-in-law). The land was described as 57 acres on and in Catfish Swamp bounded by William Hussey, William Turner and Martha Hussey. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book S page 385).

On 30 Jul 1819 a very informative deed was made between Francis Bridges and Joseph Bass. Francis Bridges sold 300 acres to Bass, in several tracts. The title history of the land was given (as was often done). The first tract was described as being land from John Turner Sr to his son Rubin Turner and from R. Turner to Francis Bridges, containing 163 acres. The second tract was from John Sanders to Levi Solomon, and Solomon to Bridges, being 100 acres. The third tract was described as from John Turner Sr to his son William Turner and from him to Francis Bridges, containing 50 acres, and all were on the east side of Catfish. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book K page 42).

The above deed refers to land previously sold, or given, by John Turner Sr to his sons Reuben Turner and William Turner. I couldn't find the deed showing this transaction from John Turner. It is possible the deeds could predate the creation of Marion District (1798), or it could be their inheritance after the death of John Turner Sr.

On 16 Dec 1819 William Turner and John Turner (his brother) sold 68 acres to John Bridges for $100. The land was described as being on the east side of Catfish  bounded east by lands transferred from John Powers to John Bridges. Lanes line was mentioned as was John Turners. William signed, but John made his mark. Witnesses were James G. Crawford and Nathaniel Murfee. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book I page 146).

William Turner was listed on the 1820 census in Marion District. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine neighbors, nor neighborhoods.  This census shows that Catherine Martin Turner had apparently died in the 1810's and that William had remarried to a woman born ca 1794/1804 (assuming that person listed with him in 1810 is his wife and not someone else). I don't know the name of his second wife.

William Turner was listed on the 1824 tax list in Marion District, he was charged with 28 cents tax.

On 16 Aug 1826 John Turner, planter, of Marion District sold 99 acres to Isham Watson for $150. The land was being part of two tracts, one granted to John Turner for 150 acres 6 Jun 1785 and the other granted to Benjamin Blackman for 991 acres 6 Feb 1792 and conveyed from Benjamin Blackman to John Turner and now from John Turner to Isham Watson. The land was on the west side of Catfish Swamp bounded on the north Robert Hussey and east by William Turner and the south by Wickham Watson and on he west by Sampson Faulk. Witnessed by Salathiel Moody and B. Moody. John Turner signed with a mark. His wife Liddy Turner relinquished her dower rights before B. Moody, Q.U. on 2 Sep 1826. She signed with a mark. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book O, page 242).

William Turner was listed on the 1830 census in Marion District. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine who his neighbors were, nor where he lived. His apparent second wife (from the 1820 census) was not with him in 1830 so she must have died before then. The age of his sons don't quite match what they ought to, nor does his own age. That suggests a neighbor or someone else provided the information to the census taker.

On 24 Apr 1830 William Turner was mentioned in a deed between George Sweat and Sarah Powers (his sister). The land was 50 acres granted to John Sanders bounded on the east by land belonging to Osborne Lane, on the south by William Bryant, and on all other sides by William Turner. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book S page 387).

William Turner was mentioned as a neighboring land owner in a deed dated 22 Nov 1837 between Osborne Lane and Samuel Hussey (William's nephew). The land in question was 50 acres on the east side of Catfish Creek bounded south by John Bryant and John Hussey, west by William Turner, north by Robert B. Platt, and east by Osburn Lane. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book T page 406).

William Turner was listed on the 1840 census in Marion District, SC. There was another William listed also but he was in western Marion in the section that later became Florence County, and he was also much younger than the William we are interested in. Our William was next door to his son-in-law Alva Parker and two houses from brother John Turner.

William Turner married Mary (---) sometime between 1840 and 1843. I don't know when she was born, nor what her maiden name was.

On 18 Oct 1843 Mary Turner, wife of William Turner, deeded her dower rights for $40.00 to Martin Turner and Catherine Parker (William's children, though not so stated here). She released her dower rights to all the lands of her husband or her third of lands that she was entitled to as his wife, the lands lying on Catfish. Mary signed with a mark. Witnesses were B. Moody and J. H. Whaley. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book S page 408).

The above deed, if not read carefully, would suggest that William was dead, but he wasn't, nor was Mary listed as a widow. As a second (or third) wife she was probably giving up her rights to the land to her step-children so there would be no problems when William died, for he was quite old then, and perhaps he was not expected to live long. In a deed like this, one or more of the witnesses were often a close relative of the woman in question. B. Moody is probably Barfield Moody (c1796-1860). J. H. Whaley is probably John H. Whaley (c1814). Since we don't know Mary's age or maiden name, I can't even guess how she might be related to Mr. Moody or Mr. Whaley.

Mary (---) Turner died sometime between 1843 and 1850.

Apparently there was some dispute about the border between William Turner and John Bryant's land for on 31 May 1848 they signed a plat and deed agreeing to the proper line. Ellen Wood Pond was mentioned. Signed William Turner and John M. Bryant before Hugh Godbold and Levi Legett. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book V page 163).

On 3 Feb 1849 William Turner sold land to Isham Watson for $5.00. The land was described as being a parcel being the north end of Watsons Mill Dam and in edge of Mill pond, one acre more or less being all the land overflowed or ever may be overflowed by a dam at that place bounded on the south by said Watsons land and on all other sides by Turners land. William Turner signed. No wife was mentioned, so Mary may have been dead by then. Witnesses were Joel Allen and Mathew Watson. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book V page 66).

William Turner was listed on the 1850 census in Marion District. His daughter Dolly was with him. Sons Martin and Theophilus are very close by. Robert Turner (c1825) was also close by.  Daughter Catherine Turner Parker and family were also nearby: # 1266/1271 William Turner 82 Farmer, $2000 Marion; Dolly 40.

Beginning in 1852, William Turner made deeds giving portions of his land to four of his children. Many thanks to Debbie Turner Smith for locating these deeds.

On 5 Sep 1852 William Turner gave land to his daughter Dolly Turner. This was 50 acres described as being an original grant to Benjamin Blackman, and from him to John Turner and from him to his son William Turner and from him to his daughter Dolly Turner. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book X page 287).

On 8 Mar 1853 William Turner gave livestock and sundry items to his daughter Dolly Turner. Witnesses were B. Moody and James M. Bryant. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book X page 287).

On 5 Sep 1855 William Turner gave land to his son Theophilus Turner. This was 58 acres. Witnesses were James W. Bass and S. Fore. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book W page 501).

On 2 Nov 1855 William Turner gave land to his son Martin W. Turner. This was 34 acres on the North East side of the Public Road and Catfish Swamp, being part of an original patent to John Sanders. Bordering land owners were R(obert) Hussey (a son of Milly Turner Hussey), James M. Bryant, Catherine Parker. William signed with a mark. Witnesses were James W. Bass and B. Moody. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book X page 279).

On 2 Nov 1855 William Turner gave more land to his son Martin W. Turner. This was 93 acres on the North East side of Catfish described as where he (Martin) currently lived. William signed with a mark. Witnesses were James W. Bass and B. Moody. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book X page 280).

On 2 Nov 1856 William Turner gave land to his daughter Catherine Parker, wife of Alva Parker. This was 8 acres. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book X page 288).

On 2 Nov 1856 William Turner gave land to his daughter Catherine Parker, wife of Alva Parker. This was 43 acres on the North East side of Catfish, bordered by Martin W. Turner, and Isham Watson. Same witnesses as before. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book X page 289).

William Turner died sometime between 1856 and 1860 in Marion District, South Carolina.

In 1860 William's son Martin W. Turner was in court defending his rights as a Free White Person. The court records are interesting, but William was mentioned in the first affidavit, so I'll give that one here. See Martin's page for the rest of the record.

On 17 Sep 1860, in Marion Court, a case of Martin W. Turner vs R. J. Gregg, Tax Collector was brought. In the case this statement was made:

John Blackman Sen. In re Martin W. Turner 17 Sep 1860.

The State of South Carolina, Marion District, Personally came John Blackman Senr and under oath saith that he knew John Turner the grandfather of Martin W. Turner as a free person of color and also Patience Turner the grandmother of said Martin W., that the said John Turner was half white and half African, that the said Patience was judging from her color and from reputation one fourth African blood. This deponent further states that he knew the father of said Martin W. the offspring of said John and Patience, his name was William, that he intermarried with one Catharine Martin a white woman and by her had several children and among them the said Martin W., and deponent believes that the said Martin W. is only one eighth African blood and very probably less that his character is and always has been good and his reception in Society has always been that of a free white man. Deponent further states that he will be 84 years of age next January. Sworn before me Sept. 17th 1860. W. W. Sellers, Not. Pub. Signed John Blackman Sr. (From Marion County Court Records, Court of Common Pleas 1788 to June 1861 Extracted by Lucille Utley and Transcribed by Teri Dalrymple. Three Rivers Historical Society)

On the same date, William H. Moody made a statement for Martin, but didn't mention his ancestors names. Also on that date, James Lane Sr made a statement and repeated much of what John Blackman had said. James W. Bass also made a statement for Martin, though named none of his ancestors. Here is James Lane's statement, confirming John Blackman's:

The State of South Carolina, Marion District, Personally came James Lane Sr and under oath saith that he knew John Turner the grandfather of Martin W. Turner, that he was half white and half African, that he was free, that he also knew Patience Turner the grandmother of said Martin. that he does not know the proportions of white and African blood in Patience but that she was considerably lighter than her husband the said John, that William Turner their son was the father of said Martin W. that he, the said William Turner married one Catharine Martin a white woman by whom he had several children and among them the said Martin W. Turner. The deponent further states that said Martin W. Turner has always so far as he knows enjoyed privileges of a white man and been received in society as such. Deponent further states that he (himself) is Seventy four 84 years of age. Sworn before me Sept. 17th 1860. W. W. Sellers, Not. Pub. Signed James (x) Lane Sr. (From Marion County Court Records, Court of Common Pleas 1788 to June 1861 Extracted by Lucille Utley and Transcribed by Teri Dalrymple. Three Rivers Historical Society)

Children of William Turner and Catherine Martin and 2nd wife and Mary (---). William Turner and Catherine had several children. It doesn't appear that he and his 2nd wife (name unknown) and 3rd wife Mary had any children together. Four children (Catherine, Dolly, Theophilus and Martin) are proven by deeds. The other children are unidentified.

  4. Unknown Daughter (1804/10)

  5. Dolly Turner (c1810)

  6. Theophilus Turner (c1814)

  7. Martin W. Turner (c1816)

Unknown Son was born ca 1800/10 in Marion District, SC. This child was with William Turner for the 1810 census age under 10, (born ca 1800/10), but not with him in 1820, so probably had married or died by then.

Unknown Son was born ca 1804/10 in Marion District, SC. This child was with William Turner for the 1810 census age under 10, (born ca 1800/10), and with him in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10). He was gone by 1830, so perhaps had married or died by then.

Stephen Turner (c1810) fits, but I don't think he is part of this family, but it is possible. I think the best choice is John Turner (c1805) who was in Marion Co., AR by 1840. This John Turner named his oldest two children "William" and "Catherine" (after his parents?) and one "Alva" (after his brother-in-law?). These names are not conclusive proof, but they are compelling when added to the rest of the evidence. John (1805) and family were listed as "Free Colored" and "Mulatto" on the various census records. John was born in South Carolina (though it isn't proven he was born in Marion Dist, SC). He lived in the exact same community as Peter Calder (from Marion Co, SC) and Martin Turner (c1790) and James Turner (1796). Martin and James were from Marion Co, SC and could either be older brothers to John, or his Uncles or 1st cousins.

Catherine Turner was born ca 1804/05 in Marion District, SC. She was apparently with William Turner for the 1810 census age under 10, (born ca 1800/10), and with him in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10).

She married Alva Parker before 1830. He was born 1799/1800 per his age on the 1850 census (50). He was born in Marion Dist., SC per the 1850 census. I don't know who his parents were.

They are listed on the 1830 census in Marion District. This census is alphabetical.

They are on the 1850 census just four houses from Catherine's father in Marion Dist., SC: # 1270/1275 Alva Parker 50 Farmer born Marion; Catherine 45; William 18; Alva 10; John 8; Joseph 7; Benjamin 3.

They are listed on the 1860 census in Marion District. Catherine's sister Dolly was living with them. Kitsey Turner (c1830) was also with them. I don't know who she is. My guess is that she is Catherine's daughter and either widowed from a Turner or mistakenly listed as a Turner here: Gum Swamp PO, # 223/223 Alva Parker, 60 Farmer $2000/1000 SC; Catherine 50; Alva 11; Benj. 10; Evander 8; Eunice 3; Dolly Turner 40; Kitsey Turner 30.

One of their sons (John Parker) was in Webster Co., GA in 1860 living with his uncle Theophilus Turner.

Alva Parker died sometime between 1860 and 1870 either in Marion Dist., SC or perhaps in Robeson Co., NC where his family was living for the 1870 census.

Catherine is listed on the 1870 census in Robeson Co., NC next to Robert Turner (c1825), relationship unknown.
